BlackBerry Traffic Update

RIM has pushed an update to their BlackBerry Traffic app bringing it to v1.3.3.14 this week. According to the description this version brings "Improved performance" whatever that means. I don't remember users complaining about bad performance before but its nice to see RIM keep up active development on the project.

You can pick up the updated BlackBerry Traffic app at this link in App World

Thanks Frank & DavidB for the tip!

BlackBerry Protect Gets Rumored Launch Date – Open Beta March 5th!

Posted: 02 Mar 2011 05:53 PM PST

Protect BlackBerry

I have been dying for RIM to release BlackBerry Protect to the masses since they finally confirmed its existence way over a year ago. We have seen RIM slowly get closer to launching Protect but we have yet to see solid launch dates. Until now. It looks like our info on BlackBerry Protect launching in 2 weeks was spot on. The N4BB team managed to snag some rumored launch dates for BlackBerry Protect around the world when it will go into open beta. Here are the dates:

BlackBerry Protect Version 1.0 Open Beta

  • March 5th (North America / Latin America)
  • March 19th (EMEA)
  • April 2nd (Asia Pacific)

That March 5th date is only a few days away so we don't have much longer to wait. We reviewed BlackBerry protect back in July of 2010 when RIM gave us early access to the solution.

I know the iPad 2 announcement is still pretty fresh but I thought I would throw this poll up to gather your initial reaction to Apple's announcement. I am really curious to see if the iPad 2 has changed the game for RIM in any way or if the PlayBook is still front and center in your mind. I know we will be seeing tons of PlayBook vs. iPad 2 comparisons in the upcoming months but let us know what you think in this poll!

Note: There is a poll embedded within this post, please visit the site to participate in this post's poll.

What Does the iPad 2 Mean for the BlackBerry PlayBook and RIM?

Posted: 02 Mar 2011 11:11 AM PST

ipad 2

Now that Apple has finally come out and detailed the iPad 2 I know many readers are wondering what it means for RIM's BlackBerry PlayBook. The news is still coming out but reactions are still being processed. So I thought I would ask all of our readers. What do you think of Apple's iPad 2 announcement?

Here are some of the things we know about the iPad 2 so far:

  • It will be available March 11th – Looks like RIM might be a month after Apple on this one…
  • The iPad 2 has a dual core processor and amped up graphics – RIM can't tout the PlayBook as the first dual core tablet anymore
  • Dual cameras on both front and back
  • Thinner than an iPhone 4 – Not really a huge deal
  • $499 price point for entry level model – I still think RIM should come in at $299… But if they must be VERY competitively priced…
  • 65,000 iPad apps… RIM has some catch up but not critical with the awesome browser
  • Built in 3G on AT&T and Verizon – RIM is not launching a internet enabled model until later. They need to get cracking on that!
  • 10 hour battery life – Hopefully RIM beats that since they have the same mAh batter size with a smaller screen.
  • HDMI out on the iPad 2 through a dongle – The PlayBook does not require a dongle which is sweet!

The PlayBook still has some sweet features and the enterprise angle on the iPad 2 but it looks like they squandered their time to launch. They really needed to beat the iPad 2 out the door but I think they can make up the lost ground. Check out the Engadget Live Blog for the iPad 2 announcements as the come.

What do you think?

RIM Execs Talk Up the BlackBerry Solution in Latest Videos

Posted: 02 Mar 2011 10:47 AM PST

RIM has posted up a nice stream of videos where their executives including Mike Lazaridis talk about the BlackBerry solution. Mostly fluff pieces but still interesting to watch. They talk history, features, enterprise, consumer, and employee mobility. Check them out below:

Rumor: RIM to Release BlackBerry PlayBook to Retail on April 10th?

Posted: 02 Mar 2011 10:42 AM PST

IMG_2849

RIM has recently backed down from their Q1 tentative launch date to a Q1-ish March/April date for the BlackBerry PlayBook. Now we are hearing rumors from the BoyGenius that the PlayBook will hit retail locations on April 10th. According to their sources the PlayBook OS will be going to "Gold Master" status on March 31st but when you boot the device the first time it will perform a upgrade to a newer OS. Not that big of a deal but I wish the launch was sooner rather than later.

On a side note I am really curious to see how RIM does OS upgrades on the PlayBook. The QNX real time OS is known for being able to totally upgrade the OS without a reboot. Now that would be sweet!

Facebook for BlackBerry Updated to 1.9.0.27 and 1.9.0.28

Posted: 02 Mar 2011 10:00 AM PST

clip_image002

Facebook for BlackBerry has been updated again. I haven't seen any updates from App World on my device yet, but the screenshot above shows there has been an update from 1.9.0.20. Some people are reporting seeing .27 and others .28. It seems like there are some actual changes/fixes in this round of updates:

Email Notification Improvements
Previously, if you turned on email notifications using the Facebook.com website, then logged out and logged back into Facebook on your BlackBerry smartphone, your email notification settings would be turned off. Now, with Facebook for BlackBerry smartphones 1.9.0.27, email notifications are left enabled if you change email notification settings using Facebook.com, then log out and log back in to Facebook on your BlackBerry smartphone.

Background Polling
Previously, if you set the background polling option to Never, then logged out and logged back into Facebook for BlackBerry smartphones, the polling setting would be set to 10 minutes instead of Never. This issue has been corrected so the background polling option will remain at the Never setting.

Photo Upload Freeze Fix
In the past, users may have seen their BlackBerry smartphone freeze when sending a photo to Facebook from the Media folder on their BlackBerry smartphone. This issue has been corrected by this maintenance release so no further freezing should occur.

Let us know when you receive the update and what version shows up for you!

MobileSync Pro: Free Cross-Platform File Sharing, Theft Protection and Sync Software

Posted: 02 Mar 2011 09:00 AM PST

As we impatiently wait for BlackBerry Protect to be released, MobileSync could provide a convenient way to share files and backup and protect data between different devices on different platforms. I don’t know how many people have an iPhone, BlackBerry and Android device, but for those who do (please tell us why), the cross-platform feature could be quite useful. :) I’m guessing this feature is more for those who switch devices and want to easily transfer data.

I am currently in the process of registering and verifying, which seems to be taking way too long. I have not actually tested the service but I can tell you what it claims to do. MobileSync Pro lets you sync between all your mobiles and the MobileSync Pro server that acts as the central repository. It backs up data including messages and emails from the mobile phone whenever sync is initiated to your personalized free online cloud storage. It also stores it in the central MobileSync Pro server to ensure your data is safe and available to all your mobile phones whenever you need. You can also track the location of your lost or stolen mobile phone. Here is the  official press release from the makers of MobileSync, Retina-X Studios:

JACKSONVILLE, Fla., March 1, 2011 — Retina-X Studios, LLC announced today the release of MobileSync Pro, a cross-platform mobile phone freeware for Android, BlackBerry, iPhone and Windows smartphones. MobileSync Pro is the most versatile and feature-rich mobile software utility yet to come out from Retina-X Studios, which has bundled a 4-in-1 solution by incorporating backup, theft-protection and file sharing solutions, besides its key function as an all-purpose sync solution.

"It's a pretty intriguing idea," said Charles King, principal analyst at Pund-IT Inc., a California-based IT industry analysis company. "Take the example of a mobile salesperson who could share his schedule remotely with people at the home office. They could upload sales documents for a particular client through the program and give him or her the tools they would need to do the job effectively just by checking in with a smartphone."

MobileSync Pro features an intuitive web panel for centralized data management which also acts as a virtual storage (200MB) and an intermediate repository of sync data. Users can customize sync settings in a granular manner, giving them the ability specify the data types (e.g. contacts, tasks, photos, etc.) that should sync from each mobile, auto sync time intervals, and even whether WiFi or 3G/2G/EDGE/GPRS are to be used for sync connectivity.

"With the rise of different smartphone platforms, consumers face a dilemma when it comes to storing, moving and backing up data, especially if they plan to switch to another mobile platform later," says James Johns, CEO of Retina-X Studios. "MobileSync Pro gives the user the ability to move all contacts, images and other data to a different smartphone platform automatically," he further states. "Our aim was to package a solution that does these different tasks efficiently, delivered as a cohesive single solution, made available for all major platforms, free of charge and no strings attached."

MobileSync Pro also incorporates the anti-theft software engine of Retina-X Studios' RecoveryCop popular mobile protection software, which can alert users on SIM change, geo-track the location, and even remotely erase data on the lost or stolen mobile phone. The file sharing feature allows sharing of photos, videos and other files amongst MobileSync Pro users.

MobileSync Pro has started to accept user registrations, and downloads of mobile apps for Android, iPhone, BlackBerry and Windows Mobile platforms are available via their respective mobile app market links. For registration, download links and more information, visit http://www.mobilesyncpro.com.

RIM’s WebWorks Development Tips and Tricks for the PlayBook

Posted: 02 Mar 2011 08:03 AM PST

WebWorks Compile

Over the past few days we have pointed out a few concerns developers, including myself, have run into with setting up the PlayBook development environment. Tim Neil over at the official BlackBerry Blog was kind enough to share his tips and tricks for how to quickly get up and running developing WebWorks apps for the BlackBerry PlayBook. He shares a batch file to help speed up the compiling and deploying of the app which is nice for those of you who prefer that. The examples are windows based but the ideas are not too different on a Mac but you will not be able to use the batch file.

Check out the tips and tricks at this link

New PSHD Theme from Hedone Design

Posted: 02 Mar 2011 07:00 AM PST

The folks at Hedone Design are always trying to raise the bar on themes that look slick and perform super fast. This newest theme PSHD has lots of bells and whistles but I’ll let the description below fill you in on most of it:

Description:

Moving side to side brings you menu-type icons which will then allow you to move up and down through additional icons/options/favorites and such – you can do almost anything from your home screen! PSHD enables you to move as quickly as you think (in some cases, and we won't talk about those, even faster). Enabled with such goodies as DFK, this one's not just perfect, but perfect for you.

Operating instructions:
The theme displays five vertical rows on the home screen.
- Favorites – here you can customize icons on the home screen for your favorite
applications, place them in the first positions on your application screen.
- Media
- Phone
- Web (please note, if you do not have Facebook or Twitter for Blackberry, these two buttons will not work).
- Utilities
The second, third, fourth and fifth rows are fixed and cannot be changed.

PSHD costs $6.99 and is available for a variety of BlackBerry devices at Hedone Design.

Need for Speed is Awesome on the BlackBerry PlayBook

Posted: 02 Mar 2011 05:42 AM PST

IMG_2843

The last time I got a chance to play with a BlackBerry PlayBook was back at CES so I was excited to play the recently announced EA games last night. I obviously had to try Need for Speed on the PlayBook and I have to say I am impressed. The graphics are spot on and the game play is both fun and simple. I really hope RIM finds a way to have developers pump out many more games like this one. Check out what I mean in the short video below:

Desktop Video Link | Mobile Video Link

I tried taking a video while playing but ended up giving up and just took a video while Mac from PocketBerry played for my camera. :) We had them showing off how the game would work if you have the settings set to pause apps and games when you switch to another app. Not as impressive but makes more functional sense!

Still I have to say I am looking forward to BlackBerry gaming after this. I know many of the Android games are made using their NDK (Native Development Kit) and that is exactly how these PlayBook apps were developed using the Tablet OS NDK based  on C/C++. That means we can hopefully look forward to some solid gaming on the PlayBook!

What game do you want to see brought to the PlayBook? My vote is for some sort of guitar hero or rock band like game…
