RIM Confirms 7Digital Music Store Preloaded on BlackBerry PlayBook

Posted: 09 Mar 2011 01:14 AM PST

7Digital

We heard rumors of it very late yesterday but now we have confirmation courtesy of RIM and 7Digital. They both announced today that the 7Digital Music Store will give BlackBerry PlayBook users access to their full catalogue of 13 million songs. You will also be able to search for songs, albums, and artists and preview the tracks before buying.

The prices will be the same as the ones currently on 7digital.com but in the local currency. I am not sure how that will work exactly for international versions of the BlackBerry PlayBook but I am sure they will find a way.

If you want to read about 7Digital and RIM patting themselves on the back check out the press release below:

PSA: Install BlackBerry Protect – Tell Your Friends About it

Posted: 08 Mar 2011 03:07 PM PST

blackberry-protect-screenshot

RIM has finally released the public beta of BlackBerry Protect after years in development. The service is something I have been waiting for RIM to do for ages by giving regular consumers a viable wireless backup solution for free. The Protect service does not work if you are on a BES but if you are most of this stuff and more are already backed up. Hopefully with BES 5.0.3 it will also support BES enabled devices.

Here is why you need to install BlackBerry Protect. It will backup your:

  • Contacts
  • Calendars
  • Tasks
  • Memos
  • Browser Bookmarks
  • Text Messages

If you upgrade to a new phone then BlackBerry Protect will move the backed up information to the new phone. It will also let help you locate a lost BlackBerry along with remotely locking or wiping a stolen device.

RIM has posted a great guide for getting you started on BlackBerry Protect and I highly recommend reading it. Head on over to the BlackBerry Protect website to get started. There are some limits on the countries where it is available in App World and it requires OS 4.6+.

PlayBook Event for TELUS Announced

Posted: 08 Mar 2011 01:45 PM PST

Customer Solutions Day! The announcement of this Telus event for business customers has given me more hope for the release of the PlayBook this month, rather than next.

On March 22nd a select group of Telus clients will get a chance to preview the PlayBook. Telus is also rumored to introduce other RIM devices set to be released this year. We have a pretty good idea of what these new devices might be, but there have not been any other details released in that regard. I can’t help but be curious about what the professional caterers will be providing as well. :)

Did anyone get this invite? Which other devices do you think Telus will announce?

RIM Announces Upcoming WebWorks Smartphone APIs for Devs

Posted: 08 Mar 2011 01:19 PM PST

BlackBerry Github

RIM has been making some nice progress with the WebWorks platform over the last year. On the PlayBook it is a pretty solid development platform but on smartphones it still plays second fiddle to Java apps. For example, the new BlackBerry 6 universal search integration is not possible as far as I know in WebWorks apps.

The WebWorks team at RIM realizes this and is working on catching things up. Their first step seems to be getting the APIs evacuated from the BlackBerry OS so they can add them whenever they want. They have also released the full WebWorks source code for both smartphones and tablet OS builds so developers can even create their own APIs.

RIM has kindly posted up a nice list of upcoming smartphone WebWorks API’s that they are currently working on along with a list of next hits and potential candidates. I am glad to see message list integration and banner indicators is top on the list because push apps without them would be kind of hard. They are also adding support for the accelerometer in the devices that have them.

Check out the full list at this link. Hopefully we will be able to see BlackBerry Smartphone WebWorks apps that work as well as Java or AIR apps soon!

Bayalink Liberty Beta Controls your BlackBerry from an iPad

Posted: 08 Mar 2011 10:26 AM PST

Bayalink Liberty iPad

It has been awhile since we last heard any news from Bayalink. Up until now their solution allowed you to use your BlackBerrys apps from your PC but their latest announcement sets their sights a little further. They let us know about the public announcement for their Bayalink Liberty solution for the Apple iPad. The solution is still in beta but it will let users take advantage of their BlackBerry from their iPad. It sounds very similar to the way the BlackBerry PlayBook bridges with BlackBerry smartphones.

The app will allow users to surf the internet and/or intranet through their BlackBerrys in future releases using your BlackBerry as a modem without a VPN. I can see iPad users taking advantage of the link to access their BlackBerry features on a larger screen. Bayalink has already done it for PCs so it only make sense tablets would come after. They plan on also releasing a version of Liberty for Android tablets in the future.

I don't know how appealing this solution will be for individuals but I can see enterprises looking into it as a viable option for using the iPad for business. If you are interested in trying the beta of their solution send an email to beta@bayalink.com for more info.

Full press release below:

Bayalink Announces a BlackBerry® connector for iPad

Bayalink Solutions Corp., a leader in Smartphone application virtualization announces today that their flagship product Liberty will support iPad Tablets. Bayalink Liberty is a solution for the BlackBerry smartphone that provides the BlackBerry smartphone user with an option to interact with select BlackBerry smartphone applications on larger display devices such as laptops and PC’s and soon the iPad (followed by Android tablets). "Since launching over 2 years ago, thousands of BlackBerry users subscribe to use our unique patent pending Liberty product to interact with their BlackBerry using a large screen and keyboard" said Trevor Dietrich, VP and Co-Founder of Bayalink. "The movement towards tablets and more specifically the iPad is a natural step in our endpoint independent strategy to support BlackBerry users on all end user computing devices."

Liberty for iPad will be a really simple, easy, safe and cost effective way to read and reply to corporate emails on the iPad without the enterprise data ever being at rest.. Think of Liberty as a bridge between the BlackBerry and the iPad.

Bayalink Liberty gives iPad users unique capability to securely connect to their BlackBerry data and interact with that data using the tablets screen and keyboard similar to how the Liberty technology has been used by enterprise customers for years on the PC, laptop and notebook. In subsequent releases, users will be able to surf the internet or intranet through the BlackBerry (with no VPN required) on a disconnected iPad via their standard BlackBerry data plan.

Bayalink Liberty leverages all the benefits of the BlackBerry infrastructure and allows enterprises to easily and securely extend the BlackBerry data off the handheld to the iPad. "Enterprise customers have been very interested in Liberty on these new emerging form factors as they investigate iPads in the enterprise," said Dietrich. "Liberty is a key piece of technology that will help push iPad into the enterprise."

Any organizations or individuals interested in participating in the beta program, please
send an email to beta@bayalink.com for more info.

Roadmap for BlackBerry WebWorks Platform for PlayBook and Smartphones

Posted: 08 Mar 2011 09:07 AM PST

BlackBerry Github

As a web developer I have been keeping a close eye on RIM's BlackBerry WebWorks platform. When it first launched it seemed like RIM was just trying to cash in on the "Widget" craze without really investing time and effort into the platform for the smartphone. That feeling is going away since the PlayBook showed that WebWorks will be the main platform for cross tablet/smartphone development for BlackBerry. The WebWorks team has been doing an awesome job of embracing open source with some solid developments like allowing code contributions.

Tim Neil from RIM pointed out to me that RIM actually has a roadmap for both the PlayBook and Smartphone WebWorks platform. I know they plan on combining the two platforms at one point in time but for now they are developed separately. The most important move I see them making is moving extracting the on device JavaScript API's from the OS so that they can be upgraded without upgrading the OS. They are also optimizing trackpad navigation and other updates in March. OS 6.1 support and NTLM/Basic authentication is coming in release 2.1.0 at some time. The WebWorks platform for the PlayBook will mainly be getting a bug fix update in v1.0.0.x Beta 3 in early March (now?) along with additional loading screen support.

These are key developments for the WebWorks platform. Check out the full list at the links below:

Anybody else loving the fact that RIM has an active Github project?

7Digital Music Store to Come Preloaded on BlackBerry PlayBook?

Posted: 08 Mar 2011 08:45 AM PST

7digital

I am not sure how reputable their sources are but the Financial Times claims that RIM will be shipping 7Digital's music store preloaded on the BlackBerry PlayBook. Its not a huge surprise since 7Digital is a large RIM partner but I really find the RIM Amazon MP3 app to be more useful and much smoother. Hopefully both will be coming to the PlayBook.

I was kind of curious to ask all of you. Where do you think you will be listening to music from? Your BlackBerry PlayBook or your Smartphone?

SugarSync has Auto-Sync BlackBerry Feature on Roadmap

Posted: 08 Mar 2011 08:04 AM PST

SugarSync Autosync

SugarSync has saved my (blank) quite a few times. I feel like the service was designed with me in mind but it has been missing one feature that I really want. The ability to sync a SugarSync folder with my BlackBerry. Their BlackBerry app allows you to access your SugarSync files from your device but it does not let you for example sync your pictures folder with SugarSync automatically.

Luis had me in mind when he asked SugarSync if they would be adding such a feature and their response is heart warming yet sad. They responded from their Twitter account that:

Auto-sync on our BlackBerry app is on our roadmap; we’re starting with Android, and then will roll out to other mobile OS apps.

They also confirmed that:

Yes, we are definitely looking into the Playbook as well. Stay tuned for updates there!

Its sad that Android is getting the auto-sync capabilities first but I am glad SugarSync has BlackBerry on their roadmap. Hopefully we will be getting this sooner rather than later. I know quite a few BlackBerry users who would jump at the opportunity to easily backup AND share their pictures from SugarSync.

Desktop Video Link | Mobile Video Link

For some reason I cannot get enough of QNX and their in car systems. I don't own a car but this system kind of makes me wish I had a QNX car when the PlayBook comes out. They point out the BlackBerry smartphone integration with apps like Traffic and the BlackBerry PlayBook climate control app they ported over. The PlayBook app was shown before but there are some new tidbits in the video.

Let us know it you spot any other QNX goodies or videos!
