Staples Internal Information Confirms April Release Date for the PlayBook

Posted: 11 Mar 2011 04:18 PM PST

Staples_CountdownThe guys over at CB got a tip with a screenshot of what seems to be Staples internal data that puts the PlayBook  release date around April 17. This does not mean that everyone will release it around this date others could have an earlier release date.  In an earlier leaked slide the price was set at $499.99 which seems a likely beginning price point.

When leaks like this begging to surface it usually doesn't stop so we expect to see more solid information in pricing within the next few days. Stay tuned.

Who is ready for the PlayBook? I know I am the device has much better specs than the  iPad including native flash, Better cameras,  a better OS.  Did I mention you could win one right here from BerryReview? Check out the instructions for a better chance to win.

More Dates Leak Out for the PlayBook Launch Date from Sears and Staples

Posted: 11 Mar 2011 02:55 PM PST

5518451900_ef8c45bf81_bWe have been hearing rumors that the PlayBook is set to launch around April 10 which is still Q1 if you go by RIM's quarterly cycles.  Will posted on his blog an affiliate e-mail sent from Sears Canada stating that customers can begin ordering their PlayBook starting tomorrow Saturday 12th with a shipping date of April 10. This falls right along the rumored dates that we had reported on before.

This is the first we have heard of sears carrying the PlayBook and the first to state officially they are carrying the device. So if you live in Canada lit looks like you will be able to get the PlayBook fairly soon. No price are stated on the e-mail but I have a feeling we will be hearing more about this over the weekend.

Another retailer that we seen leaked training documents about the PlayBook is from Staples and it looks  like they will probably be launching the device a few days later with a date on an demo display of 4/17. Either way it is good to see more promising dates for the actual release date of the PlayBook. I am still not over the fact that RIM will launch over a month later than Apple's iPad.

I know some of our lucky readers will be getting a free PlayBook and don't forget to follow the instructions there is still time to win one for this month.

RIM is Running Out of Model Numbers… What Will be Next?

Posted: 11 Mar 2011 01:03 PM PST

9900 UAProf

If you have been following the latest rumors for upcoming RIM smartphones you may have noticed that RIM is getting close to crossing a boundary. Currently the model numbers go as high as the Torch 9800 but the latest rumors have a 9900 Bold Touch or Torch 2 model which makes me wonder where RIM's numbering scheme will go next. They could simply increment the versions slightly like a 9800 to 9805 or 9890 but that would screw up their current numbering logic. My big question is if RIM will bust out with a BlackBerry 10000. :)

I think going into 5 digits would be a bit of a stretch but RIM has done weirder things before. What I think would be cooler is if RIM started converting the models to alphanumeric titles. For example we could have the QNX100 for the first QNX powered BlackBerry smartphone. Alternatively RIM could just go with models and call it the BlackBerry Torch 2, Storm 3, etc but I am sure they would need a model number to at least differentiate between GSM and CDMA variants.

So I thought I would throw the question out there. What do you think will be the next model line after the rumored 9900? Its not like it is deathly important but I am curious…

Addictive Tower Defense

Addictive Tower Defense is one of my favorite BlackBerry games. I have to take breaks from the game because it hooks me and I stop being able to do other things. The gameplay is quite fun though I wish they would throw in some more downloadable extras.

For today only our store hooked up a deal where you can get Addictive Tower Defense for only $2.49 which is 50% off the regular $4.99 price. Let us know how you like it if you pick it up!

WordPress for BlackBerry Gets v1.4.6.1 Security Update

Posted: 11 Mar 2011 08:58 AM PST

Wordpress update security

Terrence let us know that WordPress has officially released v1.4.6.1 of WordPress for BlackBerry. This new version is mostly a security update that improves the communications and uses a strong encrypted storage model. They did not add new features due to this structure change since the update may require you to re-add your blog/site.

The other changes in the app include:

  • You can now select which type of the Media API that should be used for uploading photos and videos.
  • Added the Preview for Private Posts/Pages
  • Improved the preview screen, which is now using the BlackBerry browser or any browser installed on your device.
  • Fix for VideoPress issue when uploading multiple videos
  • Fix for app permission issues that could freeze the app if all permissions are not set to Allow
  • Fix for postID that are bigger than the XML-RPC specification
  • Improved the communication layer.
  • Improved the XML-RPC calls.
  • Fix for post/page comments setting that allow people to post comments on new articles created using the app
  • Other minor changes.

You can pick up the update in App World at this link or directly from WordPress

BTW doesn't it annoy you when app developers need to put this disclaimer on their app releases:

Note: Depending on your region or country, you may not see the latest version in BlackBerry App World yet. However, the new release should be available for download on your device starting today.

Rogers Canada Giving Away a BlackBerry Curve 8520 Every Day!

Posted: 11 Mar 2011 08:48 AM PST

Rogers BlackBerry Giveaway

Usually when we announce carrier contests they are sadly only for the US. This time I am happy to point out that Rogers is giving away a free BlackBerry Curve 8520 every day until March 15th. This is open to residents of Canada who are 15 years or older and are not residents of Quebec (why?).'

It may be that Rogers has a ton of BlackBerry Curve 8520s in stock which is why they are not giving away the newer 9300 or 9780. Still you cannot look a gift horse in the mouth.

To enter you need to head on over to the Rogers Facebook page and "Like" their page. After that head to this link for the promotion. Let us know if you win!

Thanks to Jeremy for the tip!

Analyst Claims Hybrid QNX BlackBerrys Coming This Summer

Posted: 11 Mar 2011 08:31 AM PST

monster mash dance

Long time readers know what I think of analyst projections but the latest has my interest perked. Jefferies & Co. analyst Peter Misek claims that we may see a hybrid BlackBerry OS that runs the kernel on QNX with the BlackBerry OS running on top of it. He claims this is because of a memory ceiling of 256 MB of RAM with the current BlackBerry OS.

I have heard of this memory ceiling a few times but have never been able to get a solid answer from RIM. From what I understand even though devices like the BlackBerry Torch have 512MB of "RAM" that is really just the storage RAM like EPPROM while there is the actual RAM like SDRAM which acts like your PC RAM when programs are running. I heard some rumors that RIM found a way around this limitation but it might be that QNX is the solution.

Once again there is nothing more than speculation backing this one up but if the upcoming Storm 3, Torch 2, Bold Touch, and Next Gen Curve sport a QNX kernel that would be awesome! I just want them to finally kill the hourglass!

Shazam for BlackBerry v2.7 Released

Posted: 11 Mar 2011 07:14 AM PST

shazam shazam2

Shazam is a pretty sweet app that you can use infrequently (5 times a month for free) to identify songs. We were tipped off this morning that it was updated to v2.6.1 and then once again to v2.7 where it stands now. According to our tipsters these version updates are supposed to have:

  • Fixed Twitter
  • Implemented "Share by Facebook"
  • Setting Icon (shortcut) added to homescreen
  • Fixed permissions issues for people using Company phone (company server periodically changes permissions and stops some Apps working)
  • Reduced App size (faster download)

You can pick up the updated v2.7 in App World at this link

Thanks Don and Nikolaus for the tips!

Upcoming BlackBerry OS 6.1 Mobile Wi-Fi Hotspot Features

Posted: 11 Mar 2011 07:09 AM PST

BlackBerry OS 6.1 Mobile Hotspot

RIM has been quiet about the upcoming Mobile Hotspot service coming with the new OS 6.1 line of devices in the next few months. N4BB managed to snag some great slides showing off the feature and confirming a few things I had heard from sources before. It looks like RIM is targeting this plan to devices that already have Tethering plans so you will most likely have to pony up extra to your carrier to use this feature.

Here is a breakdown on the improvements in OS 6.1 to tethering and the addition of the Mobile Hotspot:

  • Mobile Hotspot functionality will allow up to 5 devices to connect to your BlackBerry and use its internet connection
  • Security will be WPA2 Personal by default but you can downgrade it so that should appease enterprise folks
  • It will automatically shut down after a few minutes of inactivity (default 10)
  • If the Wi-Fi on your phone is on hotspot mode you obviously wont be able to use it to connect to another wireless network.
  • Bluetooth does not play nice with the hotspot mode. Bluetooth use will be limited and not send/receive any data while the hotspot mode is in use.
  • Hotspot use will be suspended if you have a Bluetooth headset paired before turning it on and you get a phone call. It will continue working after the call is ended.
  • Carriers have to provision the hotspot feature. Expect AT&T to release it in 2015…
  • Tethering improvements across the board:
    • You will no longer need Desktop Manager for tethering. The interface for tethering will now be on the phone.
    • Carrier APN's and specific usernames and passwords will be provided automatically to users.
    • Tethering will be supported over Bluetooth, USB, and Wi-Fi

BlackBerry OS 6.1 Mobile Hotspot2

BlackBerry OS 6.1 Mobile Hotspot23

There is no word on if you will be able to use the mobile hotspot feature to access your companies network through the BES. That would be a very cool feature!

PlayBook to Get Its Own Video Conferencing App

Posted: 11 Mar 2011 06:37 AM PST

PlayBook Video Conferencing

With the front and back cameras on the BlackBerry PlayBook you could easily tell RIM has video conferencing in mind. The big question has been if they would use a service like Skype to power it or go out on their own with something like Apple's FaceTime. Al @CIO got some more information out of David Heit, RIM's VP of enterprise strategy, learning that the PlayBook will use a new "peer to peer video conferencing app" and it is expected very soon.

This has me wondering if RIM will find a way to integrate a video chat feature with BBM. The sad part is that video chatting cannot really properly be done even with next generation BlackBerrys since they are rumored to not have front facing cameras. I am hoping that there will still be a Skype app for the PlayBook available at launch but I can see RIM trying to develop their own standard for enterprise video chatting. They really could get some traction with secure video chat if the PlayBook hits off.

What do you think?

Women Feel More Guilt About BlackBerry Use at Home

Posted: 11 Mar 2011 04:51 AM PST

busycellphone

Studies like this one always perk my curiosity. A new study lead by Paul Glavin, a doctoral candidate in sociology at the University of Toronto, spotted some interesting differences between how men and women feel about work following them home through mobile devices. They saw women responding emotionally feeling 40% more distress than men when interrupted by mobile devices at home. This was even the case when they had the same amount of "work pressure."

The study was based on a survey of 1042 US workers, mostly white with children and in their 40s, describing their work and home dynamic. CNN has an interesting analysis of the study but I thought it would be interesting to ask all our readers. How does your BlackBerry effect your work/home balance? What role does it play?
