Video: Tutorial of BlackBerry Touch Monaco

Posted: 01 Apr 2011 11:19 PM PDT

Another video tutorial from the recent leaked OS was found for all of us to get an idea of what OS 6.1 will look like in the next batch of Blackberry devices. This one is from the all touch BlackBerry code name Monaco. For a while we had speculated this to be a Storm 3 but it does not look like it will carry that same brand name. Many will say that is looks like OS 6 which it sure does the BlackBerry OS has received quite a few upgrades in the cosmetic department but where it really counts is the functionality. RIM has promised to surprise us with quite a new features so is too early to judge it just by its appearance.  Either way this looks promising.

BlackBerry 9930 and OS 6.1 Video Tutorials

Posted: 01 Apr 2011 05:07 PM PDT

ScreenHunter_03 Apr. 01 19.02

What's better than leaked images of a yet to be release device? How about this video tutorial that high lights the sexiness of this new device.

Some of the things I noticed on the first video is the four convenience keys on the right hand side, 3 at the top and one at the bottom. The two keys at the top are the volume keys and the one at the bottom is probably the camera. The other side has the USB connection/charging port.

Instead of me telling you all that there is to see check out the videos below. Can't wait till this device makes it to my hands.

Fun Fact: Doughnuts and BlackBerrys at RIM

Posted: 01 Apr 2011 03:00 PM PDT

Tim Hortons Doughnuts

I happened to be reading a case study from the Harvard Business Review and came across an interesting little fact about life working @ RIM. I have heard about some of RIM's quirky customs in certain departments but most of my friends there have explained them away with a quick joke about being in Waterloo. That is why I was surprised to learn about a interesting custom they have to try to distance itself from the "shareholder value principle" where everything a company does should directly relate to increasing shareholder value.

Since RIM's IPO in 1997 the founders, Mike Lazaridis and Jim Balsillie, set a rule that any manager who mentioned share price at work had to buy every person @RIM a doughnut. According to the Harvard Business Review this happened in 2001 where the then COO (possibly current COO Don Morrison?) mentioned RIM's rising stock price before an analysts call forcing him to buy more than 800+ doughnuts. That makes me wonder what would happen if a manager did that now with RIM's exponential workforce. :)

I told you it was a fun fact but I wish I could modify this RIM custom with just one more addition. I propose that every time RIM lets carriers have their way to screw their end customers then RIM should buy all of their customers doughnuts…

PS: If you know of any other fun facts at RIM feel free to share them with us through the contact us page!

BlackBerry OS 6.1 Theme Icons Extracted

Posted: 01 Apr 2011 10:45 AM PDT

BlackBerry OS 6.1 theme icons

An inevitable part of every new major BlackBerry OS update leak is theme developers extracting the theme icons. Sabisgeek of Unrealthemes let us know that he has successfully extracted the icons from BlackBerry OS 6.1.0.44 that was leaked before. The icons are kind of cool but so far I have not spotted any new features leaked by the icons. Help us scour through them and let us know what you find!

Horseman and Sneakers – LOVE What You Do…

Posted: 01 Apr 2011 09:02 AM PDT

 SneakerMan HOrseman

I have to commend RIM's ad team with their two latest "LOVE what you do" advertisements. They just posted a Bold 9780 "Horseman" and a Style 9670 "Sneakers" commercials on YouTube and both really made me laugh. At first I was expecting the Horseman to be chatting with the horses over BBM. Still I was impressed to see him using a Bold 9780 while on horseback.

The second video I love just because it is not often you see somebody that passionate about sneakers. I also love how he sports the Style in his shirt pocket.

Shintai Theme from Magmic – Bring Tranquility to your BlackBerry.

Posted: 01 Apr 2011 07:00 AM PDT

Elle from Magmic let me know about one of their latest themes called Shintai. Available for most BlackBerry devices, with Shintai “your BlackBerry becomes a sacred shrine that boasts spirituality and harmony in the palm of your hand. The icon panel is revealed when you scroll down, exposing fully customizable Today items. Shintai is the ideal theme for a practical yet tranquil lifestyle.” It’s a simple styled theme with neutral colors and practicality but if you like that ‘zen(ish)’ kind of look you will probably like this theme. Currently costing $4.99, more screen shots and details are available in the Store.

BlackBerry PlayBook Simulator “Rooted” Before Launch!

Posted: 01 Apr 2011 05:54 AM PDT

QNX Terminal Access BrAFj

I never thought this day would come! We have been informed that the BlackBerry PlayBook has been successfully rooted to expose the soft underbelly of the QNX OS. While Android devices are designed to have security/root exploits and each release of Apple's iOS is Jailbroken within days of launch BlackBerry devices have always stood strong… until now.

A Belarusian hacker calling himself BrAFj is reporting that he has successfully accessed the BlackBerry PlayBook's underlying QNX OS. He reported that the exploit successfully works in the BlackBerry simulator allowing low level access to the QNX OS terminal. He is currently experimenting with what he can accomplish from the QNX terminal but you can check out a video showing off the successful rooting process at the link below!

BrAFj explained that "if your device runs Adobe Flash it is not a matter of if you will be hacked but when." For the yet to be released BlackBerry PlayBook it looks like today is the day. BrAFj cannot confirm that the root exploit will work on actual BlackBerry PlayBook devices but reports that "RIM will have to drastically change how Flash works on the BlackBerry PlayBook to patch the exploit." That is not surprising considering Flash Player has a long storied history of critical security flaws.

My mind is still reeling from the implications of what this means for RIM. For years they have withstood any serious exploit. I am hoping this means we can get some CyanogenMods and other goodies for the PlayBook. The possibilities are endless if this exploit carries over to actual BlackBerry PlayBook devices at launch.

More details to come as the story develops! You can watch a video of BrAFj executing the BlackBerry PlayBook rooting exploit at this link.

Spring is Here! BlackBerry Fitness App Roundup, 50% Discount and Giveaway!

Posted: 01 Apr 2011 05:00 AM PDT

Keep reading to find out how you can enter to win a free copy of one of the 4 featured apps!

blackberry workout

Spring has officially arrived! Even though there is still 3 feet of snow up here in the Great White North, I feel the need to burn some of the blubber that has magically appeared over winter. Its been a LONG 8 months!

So I skipped over to the carefree BerryReview Store to see what kind of amazing fitness apps I could discover.  After catching my breath I picked up 4 apps that I will quickly review here: 200 Situps, Pushups, Brainwave Tuner, and Self-Hypnosis for Weight Control.

situps home

200 Situps is basically a virtual personal trainer that helps you to eventually do 200 situps. Not in one set, but in one session. So theoretically, by the end of the program, you should be able to perform 5 sets of 40 situps with short rests between sets.

situps initial test

To get started, begin the initial test, as shown above, and do as many 'good form' situps as you can manage. After you save, the app will automatically create a program that will help you achieve the goal of 200 situps. I would advise against killing yourself in the initial test. Do as many as you can comfortably, then stop. If you can only manage a few, that's fine. If you go crazy during the test, you'll have to go crazy the entire time.

Keep reading…or keep blubber. Its your decision.

Good choice.

pushups home

As you can see, the Pushups app is pretty much the same as the situps app. This one I'll go through in a little bit more detail.

pushups today

After the initial test, you click 'Today's Program.' Above is an example of a daily program. Across the top you can see how many pushups you need to do in each set.

pushups rest

After you click 'Done', this screen appears showing you how long to rest until the next set. This is my favourite part. Thumbs up

pushups graph

You can track your progress in a graph to see how you're doing. These 2 apps surprised me. I really liked how they were setup. Neither daily program takes more than 10 minutes so its easier to stay motivated. The visual aid of the graph is helpful to keep motivation up.

Another great way to motivate yourself is, of course, hypnosis…

Fitness folder - brainwave tunerbrainwave wave typeso

After trying Situps and Pushups, I was getting frustrated that the fat wasn't melting away before my eyes. I guess I should have actually done the exercises rather than just clicking buttons? I don't know. So I turned to Brainwave Tuner. This is a very interesting app. I basically got it to hypnotise myself so I actually did the situps and pushups. As you can see in the screenshot above, this app is for many other things as well. I was surprised to learn that Brainwave Tuner won the 2009 Handango Championship Award for Best Health/Fitness App. It also has a 4.5 star rating on App World. Check out the surprisingly flirt free reviews below.

image

These reviews actually provide a decent overview of Brainwave. Its basically a series of tones and frequencies that play repeatedly, supposedly affecting the way your brain works. I gotta say, I'm not sold on this app quite yet. I attribute most of these positive reviews to one of three things: the placebo effect, buyer's remorse, or…it actually works. I'll let you be the judge.

Now here is an app that might just save my waistline and help me blast this blubber once and for all! Self-Hypnosis for Weight Control. This app differs substantially from Brainwave in that it aims to actually hypnotize you into eating right, exercising, and taking care of your body. It uses speech rather than tones. You choose how long of a session you want, relax, and let the brainwashing begin. A calm man's voice comes on with soothing elevator music playing in the background. He tells you your eyes are getting heavy and you're laying in a field somewhere surrounded by sunshine, lollipops and rainbows… or something like that.

weight control home

I haven't been able to sit through longer than the 5 minute session but I'm pretty sure the full recording lasts for an hour and it just cuts off depending on how long you selected. I must admit though, I did feel quite relaxed even after a 5 minute session. Below is part of the overview of Self-Hypnosis for Weight Control from the homescreen of the app.

weight control sucess

Overall, I thought the Pushups and 200 Situps were quite useful apps. They are simple and intuitive and with free versions to try, there's no reason not to give them a shot. They are also small in size (about 250kb) so you don't have to worry about memory issues.

There are free ad-supported versions of Pushups and 200 Situps on App World that you can try. To get rid of the ads, each app costs $3.99 which is a savings of 20% off the regular price of $4.99. A small price to pay for a tiny, virtual, personal trainer.

GIVEAWAY: Bhargavi from Vimukti Technologies let me know that they will offer one free copy of Pushups and one free copy of 200 Situps (both ad free versions of course) to our readers. Brainwave Tuner and Self-Hypnosis for Weight Control take an obviously different approach to fitness and motivation. I am more of a hands on kind of guy, but judging by all of the positive reviews (at least for Brainwave Tuner) the apps could be effective. They are both quite hefty when it comes to size though (Brainwave 2.9MB, Weight Control 2.7MB). Ironic?
