BBM 6.0 to Have an Updated UI and New Features

Posted: 05 Apr 2011 04:18 PM PDT

bbm-6-2Up until now BBM 5.0 has just only seen minor upgrades with bug fixes and backend upgrades. Many users expect new UI and features each time an update is released but that has not been the case.  We are not likely to see any new features and UI update until RIM officially releases an update.  We have seen a few BBM 6.0 leaks but there has not been any noticeable changes.

A screen shot that surfaced today shows that you will be able to set a color preference  for messages and also include some of the new 6.1 icons we saw from a leaked OS.

On a side note there is a 6.0 leaked BBM floating around but I would suggest not to try and install it because it will likely give you headaches and mess up your BlackBerry.

How to Order a BlackBerry PlayBook Internationally at Launch

Posted: 05 Apr 2011 03:03 PM PDT

Preorder BlackBerry PlayBook

International users have to wait to get their BlackBerry PlayBooks since they are launching in the US and Canada first. Davis pointed out to me a great article on BBInsight that highlights how international users can use a package forwarding service to preorder a BlackBerry PlayBook in 240 countries. I have not had any experience with these services since I live in the US but the idea is pretty simple. You order the BlackBerry PlayBook online from one of the preordering companies like BestBuy or FutureShop and have it sent to a package forwarding service. That service will then mail it to you wherever you are.

They are recommending you use www.parcel2go.com for package forwarding and preordering through www.futureshop.ca but you can play with the idea yourself. Good luck and let us know what works for you!

Wrath Retro Shooter Game $0.99! 2 Free Copies to be Won!

Posted: 05 Apr 2011 02:49 PM PDT

Wrath home

Wrath is a great BlackBerry game that has been around for a long time. It was Lone Dwarf Games' first crack at an app and was originally developed exclusively for the Storm in 2009.

Wrath now works with most devices and the price has been permanently reduced from the original price of $4.99 to $0.99. Keep reading to find out how you could score a free copy!

I started playing Wrath a few days ago and I have enjoyed it thoroughly. It has a space invaders/galaga feel to it. Wave after wave of enemies relentlessly attack in an attempt to destroy your lone ship. You can collect powerups along the way to increase health and firepower. If you destroy all or most of the enemies in a wave, you are awarded health and super bombs. Super bombs (which can also be collected during the game) destroy all enemies on the screen, with the exception of bosses. A super bomb will, however, damage a boss.

Wrath control options

These are the control options for the non-touch version. I would highly recommend Trackball option 2 as it allows for much faster navigation.

Wrath sound options

A cool features of all of Lone Dwarf's games is the ability to use your own music during the game. You can pick a playlist and have it shuffle through your own songs, including or excluding the Wrath soundtrack. I'm not a fan of the sound effects or shoot sound so its nice that those can be disabled.

Wrath triple shot boss pause

Here's a screen capture of one of the bosses. Another great feature of Wrath is the ability to quit a game and close the app completely then come back and resume exactly where you left off. It is tough to put down and trust that your precious score will be saved, but don't worry. It works…as long as you don't pull the battery. Yes, I did test this. Not on purpose though. Sad smile

Which brings me to my favourite feature: the online leaderboard.

Wrath leaderboard

When you're beloved ship is finally overtaken and destroyed by those dastardly aliens (and it WILL be destroyed), you have the option to post your score to the online leaderboard. I'm thinking there must be a separate leaderboard for each version of the game (touch and non-touch) because it seems to me the non-touch version would be easier to navigate. I'm not sure if not many people play the game and actually submit to the leaderboard, or if I'm actually good at the game. I'm gonna go with the former for sure.

Lone Dwarf Games has provided us with 100% discount codes for 2 of our lucky readers! So if you want to try your luck at winning a free copy, leave a comment on this post. Only one comment per person. NOTE: The discount code is only valid at the BerryReview Store. Contest closes April 9, 2011 at 11:59 EDT.

If you can't wait, get Wrath for $0.99 right now!

Rookie Rocket Game now available in the BerryReview Store

Rookie Rocket by Fabian Heuwieser is now available in the BerryReview Store.  The purpose of this game is to navigate the rocket through obstacles and collect stars.  If you hit an obstacle it hinders your path until you are able to get around it, and if you miss a star, the game play speeds up.  It's a pretty decent game for its low price tag of $0.99, and well worth it if you are looking for a good addicting time waster.

Ximad now offers a free version of Brain Cube

Posted: 05 Apr 2011 02:12 PM PDT

braincube

Ximad is now offering a FREE version of their popular game Brain Cube.  The concept is a simple one, you need to navigate the block through the mazes, and dodge the traps and tricks.  Then you are required to have the block flip into the portal style square.  Took me a few tries to get a hang of it, and once i did, it became addicting.  You can find the free version in AppWorld, and the paid version in AppWorld or the BerryReview Store.  Please note, that the free version is ad supported, and will ask you to upgrade often, but at the price of $0.99 in AppWorld or $1.99 in the BerryReview Store, it is worth it if you enjoy this game.

Here are some more screenshots:

RIM just posted on their DevBlog that they just launched and update to the BlackBerry WebWorks SDK Beta 3.
You can pick up the update at this LINK

Note from RIM: Important architectural changes have been implemented in v1.0.0.23 of the BlackBerry WebWorks SDK, so developers will need to re-compile existing applications using this SDK in order for them to successfully run on the new BlackBerry® Tablet OS simulator v.0.9.4.

What’s New: Our development teams have been very active since the last release, and have made some terrific enhancements in the capabilities, stability and performance of the Beta3 version of the SDK. Some notable improvements include

  • Code signing enabled – you can now secure your application using the BlackBerry code signing process for BlackBerry Tablet OS. Learn about code signing Here
  • AJAX support for local context. This fix improves the quality of support for using AJAX to retrieve local resources. A benefit of this fix includes improved support on the BlackBerry® PlayBook™ tablet for Java
  • Loading screen image – Developers can define a loading screen and transition effect in their config.xml file to improve the user experience during application startup.
  • Major improvements in Mac support – Absolute paths now allowed in ZIP archive; _MACOSX folder no longer being included in BAR file; Format of bbwp command line arguments changed from "-" to "/".
