| BlackBerry Touch 9860 (aka Monza) Also Gets a Leaked Spec Sheet Posted: 08 Apr 2011 12:45 PM PDT Let the good leaks roll! We have been hearing about RIM's upcoming replacement for the whole Storm line with the Monaco 9850 (CDMA) and Monza 9860 (GSM). Most of the details until now have been for the CDMA Monaco 9850 variant but now thanks to N4BB we have the technical spec sheet for the BlackBerry Touch 9860. Here is what the spec sheet details:

| BlackBerry Bold Touch 9900 (aka Dakota) Spec Sheet Leaked! Posted: 08 Apr 2011 12:10 PM PDT
We now have even more confirmation on the features of the upcoming BlackBerry Bold Touch 9900 (Codename Dakota). The team at N4BB managed to score a technical specifications sheet for the device confirming its Snapdragon 1.2Ghz processor. Also of note is that it looks like the device will support T-Mobile's 3G network on 1700Mhz in case the AT&T acquisition does not go through. It also comes with support for Bluetooth 2.1 which simplifies pairing and improves A2DP Bluetooth stereo playback. The specs point to the 8GB built in memory along with 768MB of RAM with a Qualcomm 8655 1.2Ghz processor. The screen is confirmed to be 640×480 VGA at 287Dpi which is nice though it is only 2.8 inches. Let us know if you spot anything else! More details after the jump…

| Angry Farm Adds 30 New Levels in Latest Update Posted: 08 Apr 2011 10:45 AM PDT
I gave up on Angry Farm a few weeks ago since I cannot seem to pass level 10. I will be giving it another spin now that Smarter Apps has released v1.1.11. This new update brings a bunch of fixes but according to Adam over @CrackBerry it also includes 30 new levels totally free. Oddly enough the new version is available in App World at this link but not in the store just yet but I am sure that will change soon. The only downside seems to be they have disabled sound for CDMA devices for some reason. I am still pissed that I cannot play the game while listening to Slacker but hopefully this version fixes that. Let us know how it goes and if you figure out how to get past level 10! The Facebook for BlackBerry update is only for OS 6.0+ devices but attempts to fix the issues users are having with signing in. | Rumor: RIM Working on BlackBerry Orlando – Curve Styling with Touch Posted: 08 Apr 2011 10:27 AM PDT
I am not sure what to make of this latest rumor. Lucas over at N4BB is reporting that he has been tipped off to RIM working on a new device called the BlackBerry Orlando. The device is supposed to take the BlackBerry Curve form factor and add a touchscreen. It seems like RIM would really be stretching themselves thin since we already have rumors of two other Curve models coming out but that has not stopped RIM in the past. This device was not seen on any previous roadmaps but the Curve was a huge success for RIM so I can see them trying to milk it with more features in the classic model. Keep in mind you should take all of these rumors with a grain of salt but what do you think? Does RIM need a Curve Touch style device to match up with the Bold Touch? | Free SuperSearch App Adds More Options to OS 6 Universal Search Posted: 08 Apr 2011 10:18 AM PDT
The team at S4BB came up with a really creative idea with their SuperSearch app. The app simply lets you add more search options in the BlackBerry OS 6 Universal Search menu. RIM builds in a few by default and apps add their own but SuperSearch comes with 8 built in options along with the ability to create your own custom ones. Here are the built in ones:
To add more you simply need to use the menu option in the browser on any OS 6.0 devices. Obviously this app is OS 6.0 only due to it using Universal Search. You can pick up SuperSearch for free in the store or in App World. Let us know if you manage to get a custom search working for BerryReview. Sadly I have not had time to try it out yet. | Rumor: Verizon Removing Their One Year Contract Option? Posted: 08 Apr 2011 09:18 AM PDT
A new leaked document from AndroidCentral points to Verizon killing off their one year contract option. Verizon was one of the last hold outs with that one year option which gave you a quasi middle ground between paying $550 for a new phone or signing a 2 year contract. For those of us who have to have the latest device that leaves you watching all of the new devices come out for 2 years until you can upgrade. Supposedly this new policy goes into effect on April 17th so we will know soon enough. I never truly understood the point of the whole contract in the first place with subsidized phones but it has become a huge selling factor for carriers. It also lets them easily block third parties from selling expensive unlocked phones without subsidies. The thing is that you are paying Verizon that monthly fee either way if they are subsidizing the device or not and I have never understood how that made any sense. Better yet when your 2 year contract is over does Verizon start charging you less until you upgrade? | RIM Starts Private Beta of BEAM Enterprise Middleware Solution Posted: 08 Apr 2011 08:05 AM PDT
RIM killed off the Mobile Data Service (MDS) integration suite with BES 5.0.3 they have left a bit of a void. MDS was a way for companies to easily create BlackBerry applications that interface and connect to backend systems at the enterprise. RIM had a reason for creating MDS but they needed something to better help enterprises get hooked on BlackBerry beyond email and PIM. While at the BlackBerry Developers Conference last year in September RIM let us know they were cooking up something called BEAM (BlackBerry Enterprise Application Middleware) as a platform for easy enterprise development. RIM was showing off how companies can use this upcoming tool to hook into SAP, Oracle Fusion, and IBM WebSphere with the solution. The solution was supposed to allow enterprise apps to be super apps with GPS, Camera, push data, and other more sophisticated features without as much overhead. Josep from MiBlackBerry let us know that RIM has started to open up private beta testing of the BEAM solution to select companies. My guess is we will be seeing an full on launch or at least a public beta at BlackBerry World in May and RIM is simply preparing. Here is how RIM describes BEAM to their beta testers: What is BEAM?

| BlackBerry Torch 2 9850 Caught on Camera! AT&T Release in July? Posted: 08 Apr 2011 08:03 AM PDT You have to love Fridays! The BlackBerry faithful have been clamoring for more news on the upcoming line of BlackBerry devices and it has been flowing in. We now have some hands on pictures of the BlackBerry Torch 2 9850 thanks to the BoyGenius. They are reporting that the device is practically identical to the current BlackBerry Torch but with seriously beefed up specs like the 640×480 screen resolution along with a 1.2Ghz CPU which they say "could light a fire."
I am really excited about these upcoming devices! How about you? Supposedly this device will be announced at BlackBerry World in May and launch on AT&T in July which fits the Q3 rumors from before though its early Q3.

When RIM first contacted us about an upcoming beta app for SMB and enterprise I thought they were talking about their SharePoint client. Turns out they have quite a few more tricks up their sleeve. They let us in on an early preview of BlackBerry Mobile Conferencing which has just been released in the BlackBerry Beta Zone. This new app promises to make scheduling, joining, and rejoining conference calls from your BlackBerry quick and easy. The BlackBerry is already pretty good at handling conference calls in meeting invites but BlackBerry Mobile Conferencing takes that a bit further. The key features of BlackBerry Mobile Conferencing include: Calendar Integration: The BlackBerry Mobile Conferencing application integrates with the Calendar application on your BlackBerry smartphone for maximum convenience. One Click Join: When your calendar indicates it's time for a conference call to begin, you get a pop-up display that can dial you into the meeting without you having to remember or dial lengthy phone and access code combinations. Reconnecting: If you're inadvertently dropped from a conference call, the application allows you to reconnect with one easy click. Store Dial-In Numbers: When there are multiple phone numbers in the invitation for participants in different locations, the application is designed to choose the most appropriate number for you (limited to North American phone numbers only). You can also choose to change the suggested dial-in number manually. Easy Conference Scheduling: Turn almost any meeting invite into a conference call with just a single click. You can also store reservation-less or recurring conference information to your conference profile on your BlackBerry smartphone so you can include it in conference call meetings you schedule from your device. Protect Your Host Codes: When sending conference call meeting invitations using conference profile information, participants see only the information they need to join the call. Moderator codes are kept hidden and only used to join the meeting organizer into conference calls in cases where the code is required to open the conference bridge. The only real requirement is that you need an OS 5.0+ device but otherwise RIM plans on starting to roll it out to more users in the BlackBerry Beta Zone starting today. | FilesAnywhere Expands Their File Backup & Sync Tool to BlackBerrys Posted: 08 Apr 2011 06:35 AM PDT
With all the noise made about DropBox and SugarSync (my current favorite) we sometimes miss the other competitors. FilesAnywhere claims it has been in the cloud storage business since 1999 and they have a pretty competitive feature set. Their desktop tools also let you backup to secure storage along with collaborating and editing files in their cloud. They announced this week that they have extended their FilesAnywhere platform to BlackBerrys with a new app. Their plans seem a bit more expensive than SugarSync/DropBox and they only offer 1GB of storage. Still their BlackBerry app looks nice and functional though uses a bit too small of a font. Features of the BlackBerry app include:

| Video: BlackBerry Messenger on the PlayBook Posted: 08 Apr 2011 05:33 AM PDT
Although we already know that BlackBerry Messenger will work on the PlayBook via the BlackBerry Bridge, I have yet to see it in action…until now. Its tough to see, but you can tell that messages are being received on the PlayBook. Check out the video below. Another interesting point that is mentioned by this demonstrator is the ability to connect a BlackBerry Smartphone device to a PlayBook by scanning a barcode. Pretty cool. I wish this video was longer as it seems this guy was asking some good questions and it got cut off, but I guess we won't have to wait too much longer to see every feature of the PlayBook. I know for a fact that RIM has been showing partners and large customers what they have in store for them with the BlackBerry PlayBook. Now we have learned from one of our readers that RIM is throwing BlackBerry PlayBook "AMP IT UP" training series in a ton of cities in the US and Canada to train sales associates and enterprise customers how to "Amp up sales with this exciting new product from BlackBerry." It is really nice to see that RIM is making an extra effort to teach sales reps and customers why they would want to promote a BlackBerry PlayBook. An interesting kind of advertising.
I am not sure exactly what sales reps and enterprise customers RIM is targeting with this promotion but this is the text of the email they are sending out:

If you were one of the ones that Ordered a Playbook from staples and hoped that you would get the device days earlier it looks like Staples was pulling an early April fools. Quite a few people that checked their order status saw a "cancelled" status. Staples sent out an e-mail today explaining the status of the PlayBook pre-orders. Read below: Valued Staples Customer, Thank you for selecting a BlackBerry PlayBook during our pre-sale campaign. Because this is a pre-sale, the order number assigned when you preordered (referenced above) will not provide valid tracking information and at some point will show ‘cancelled’ if you try to track it. We wanted to assure you we have reserved your PlayBook and it will ship between April 18th and April 20th with a transit time of 1 – 3 business days. You will receive your order number that can be tracked when the product ships and your credit card will be charged at that time. | Skype Found in App World for PlayBook for $2.99? Posted: 07 Apr 2011 03:22 PM PDT
Skype has been spotted in App World for PlayBook. Tashanna let us know that bbnews.pl somehow obtained this picture of App World running on a PlayBook. I was under the impression that App World for PlayBook was highly classified. This is the first official looking picture I've seen of App World on the PlayBook. It looks good. All except for the price tag on Skype…$2.99?! First of all, did Skype forget that $2.99 is no longer the minimum paid price for apps? Secondly did Skype forget that Skype IS NOT A PAID APP?! Unless this version comes with premium features like Skype to non-Skype calls, I cannot figure out how this is justified. Skype is definitely free for the iPhone, iPod and iPad. Android users also don't have to pay. Ronen posted an article with the picture below from CES back in January about the possibility of seeing Skype on the PlayBook. It has since been discovered that this picture is in fact a mockup. But notice the FREE price here.

| Gogo Inflight Internet Gets its Own BlackBerry App Posted: 07 Apr 2011 03:01 PM PDT
It has come to the point where about a third to half of planes flying domestically in the US have Wi-Fi. The most common service on these planes is Gogo Inflight Internet and it works well for browsing the web, email, and streaming radio. I even gave it a perfect score in a review back in 2009 which I will hopefully update on the trip to BlackBerry World in May. While I remember connecting easily with my BlackBerry to the Gogo network but it did take a bunch of clicking and signing in from the browser. It wasn't bad but Gogo just simplified it with a new BlackBerry app they told us about. The free Gogo app gives you a one step sign in for all flights using Gogo in the US. After you sign up for Gogo you can simply connect on a flight by clicking a button in the app. As you can probably tell this app is targeted at frequent fliers who use Gogo especially since the half a megabyte app is a bit bulky for casual users. You can pick up the free Gogo Inflight Internet app in App World at this link. NOTE: Gogo Inflight Internet is available on all AirTran Airways and Virgin America flights, and select Air Canada, Alaska Airlines, American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, United Airlines, and US Airways flights. | Travalert Tries to Wake You Up Before You Miss Your Stop Posted: 07 Apr 2011 12:30 PM PDT I ride public transportation practically every day and totally understand the problem Travalert is trying to solve. You will be on a subway, train, or bus tuning out to music or even grabbing some shuteye and you almost miss your stop and your heart jumps in your chest. I usually set a alarm on my BlackBerry when I am listening to music but with train and bus times ranging based on signal issues or traffic it gets a bit tricky.
Travalert offers a quasi solution with their $1.99 BlackBerry app. They let you set a GPS alarm when you are a specified distance from your stop or simply set a timer for when you are a specified amount of time from your stop. You can select between sound, vibration, or even song alerts and you can save an alert to use again next time. I am not sure how the GPS alert would work in the underground NYC subway but other transportation systems like the above ground trains should work. The only problem with Travalert is that is currently has two flaws. First of all the app is only available for the BlackBerry Bold 9650 and Bold 9700 for some odd reason (US and Canada only). They have also managed to make the app over 4MB which is pretty crazy.

Last year when rumors of the 9700 possibly allowing updates to OS 6.0 surfaced, there were many excited Bold owners waiting for chance to try it out. Since then there have been lots of leaks and even some official releases. This one would be classified as a leak, but it is the latest OS out there for the 9700. So if you can't handle not having the newest OS, grab this one (at your own risk) and let us know if you notice any differences. Of course our standard warning applies… Warning: This OS will not install on any other BlackBerry besides the one mentioned above and is not an official release. If you do not know how to upgrade your BlackBerry OS please start by reading this step by step guide. Don't forget to delete the vendor.xml file located in c:program files>common files>research in motion>apploader to install it on a different carriers device. Don't forget our usual warnings: do not download and install these updates if you don't know what you're doing. | BlackBerry Bold Touch 9930 Gets More Hands On Pictures Posted: 07 Apr 2011 09:59 AM PDT The excitement is starting to really build up for RIM's upcoming lineup of BlackBerry OS 6.1 devices. We have seen quite a few leaks about these devices over the last few months including a picture of the Bold Touch from back in February. BGR managed to score some more hands on pictures of the BlackBerry Bold Touch 9930 which will be a hybrid device with both a keyboard and touchscreen. It also includes a new battery which will probably be needed for the 1.2Ghz processor it is packing along with a 640×480 screen 2.8 inch screen and 768MB of RAM. | Free MyFeeds 1.0.0 Beta Adds New UI and More Posted: 07 Apr 2011 08:31 AM PDT
Keeper has posted an update to his free RSS reader app MyFeeds in the forums asking for users to provide feedback. The new version adds a load of features including a new UI along with one way Google Reader sync and more shortcut keys. Its a pretty cool app but requires OS 5.0+.

This version is still using Keepers Vietnamese server so it may be a bit slower in the US and other locals but hopefully that will be fixed soon. Still you might want to keep that into consideration when using your Google account for Google Reader synching.
