First BlackBerry PlayBook Commercial Airs

Posted: 25 Apr 2011 07:41 PM PDT

We have been waiting to see RIM launch an ad campaign for the BlackBerry PlayBook and today we get to see the first step.  We speculated for quite a while when we would first see them and we were hopping for an add blitz on launch day and nada. Finally a week after launch date we have the first one. Check out the video below.

Thanks to Tashana for the tip.

BlackBerry Podcasts Updated to Version 1.5

Posted: 25 Apr 2011 02:09 PM PDT

blackberry_podcasts_1

RIM notified us today that BlackBerry Podcasts has received a significant upgrade. I'm not seeing the update yet in App World, but we're told its coming in the next 24 hours for users in North America.

Here are some of the new features in version 1.5:

  • Addition of a preview or play option while the podcast is downloading
  • Web podcast searching with integrated Google® search
  • Improved content presentation within categories: the first 40 listings in each category will be "featured content," a combination of the most popular feeds and RIM-programmed feeds

Let us know if you're seeing the update and how version 1.5 is working for you!

BlackBerry Touch Monza Coming to T-Mobile June 29th?

Posted: 25 Apr 2011 09:41 AM PDT

Back in February we reported that T-mobile was planning on releasing a storm like BlackBerry and today Tmonews is reporting that internal rummors have a release date of June 29th. This lines up quite nicely with what we been told. The first time we heard about this was when T-mobile held an event to promote BlackBerry devices among the employees. I heard that T-mobile wanted to release it sooner but with RIM sometimes dates can get pushed back. We have also been told that T-mobile will be releasing the Bold Touch or whichever name it releases on. The announcement will be at BlackBerry World next week. It’s not surprising to hear this rummors now that we are closer to the event. I just wish RIM would release them right after the announcement instead of having us wait so long.

What Are Your Favorite PlayBook Apps?

Posted: 25 Apr 2011 08:30 AM PDT

IMG_00000037The PlayBook has been on the Market almost a week now and at launch the application selection was not a lot. Just like any new platform it take time. Critics may put the PlayBook down for the lack of apps? and I say to them be realistic did you expect them to just materialize into the app store? With any new Platform the app developers will slowly adopt it and start building over time.  None of the other tablets had hundreds of apps available at launch but they were build as people began to adopt the Platform. Since launch day I have noticed that App World has had more apps added every day. It is hard to tell how many apps are available since  RIM has not added app count by category yet, but the selection seems to increase steadily as apps get approved. Some of my favorite apps have even seen updates to them already since launch day.

So what are your favorite applications so far, it can include native apps that were created by RIM?

Here are my favorites so far in no particular order

Slaker

Poynt

Air Hockey

Need for speed

Tetris

Weather and WeatherEye HD

Tweedless

News 360

Crazy Gems 2

Adobe Reader

and last but probably My favorite the browser with Flash Player for streaming media and browsing.

I am sure there are quite a few more out there and have not had the time to check them all out but figure we ask you to list some of your favorites?

The Playbook Cameras

Posted: 25 Apr 2011 08:00 AM PDT

The Playbook’s rear camera packs 5MP punch. Below are some test shots in different lighting situations. As you can see it takes some pretty clear shots, but performs a little under my satisfaction level in indoor low light settings (to be fair, most cameras have issues in that light setting). Also, to be even fairer, the iPad2′s cameras are waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay worse.

The camera settings can be accessed in the above pull-down menu.

Outdoor shot with completely natural light

Taken at a Starbucks with natural light from all directions.

My BerryReview home office. A good shot taken with natural sunlight indoors.

Indoor shots in low light settings do not have the best results. But in that situation, you may just want to take out a real camera anyway.

RIM in Talks With Hulu, Until then Use a Work Around to Watch Hulu

Posted: 25 Apr 2011 07:00 AM PDT

Just as soon as the PlayBook launched Hulu blocked the BlackBerry PlayBook from having access to their content.  On Friday we learned that RIM is in talks to bring Hulu's mobile subscription officially to the BlackBerry PlayBook. This means that if they do come to an agreement that would cost Hulu users a monthly fee.  Some good news but not that good if you ask me.  All this did not stop people from finding ways to may it work. You have to love the creativity of individuals. One trick a user found was to copy the embedded link found on the video and then send it to themselves, once the e-mail is received there you find a hyperlink that allows you to click and watch the video. That sound a bit complicated but it works. Devin also let us know that he found a site that has posted a code to search for videos on Hulu and allows you to watch. The reason this works is that Hulu just check for the PlayBook browser and blocks it, this way you are not visiting hulu directly. Hulu may find ways to block this methods but until then enjoy some hulu content thanks to this creative individuals.

To check out the site and  search for Hulu videos follow this link to his blog.

Also the guys from theberrytechs have put up a hulu search code on their site. Check it out at this Link

A tip to make an active video screen full screen place your finger towards the bottom of the video where the video menu appears but don’t click or remove your finger hold it and drag you finger to the option to make it full screen then release. This is what has worked for me when video screen open a new tab once you click on it.

Official OS 6.0.0.534 for the BlackBerry 9800, 9300, & 9700

Posted: 25 Apr 2011 06:00 AM PDT

ScreenHunter_02 Nov. 09 20.20Several tips came in over the weekend regarding official OS releases for quite a few devices. The list can be found below by device and the name of the carrier who released the update.  Thanks to Dan, and Tashana, for the tips.

BlackBerry 9800 OS v6.0.0.534 from Virgin and Bell Mobility

Direct Link to Bell Mobility here

Direct Link to Virgin Mobile Canada here

Official BlackBerry 9700 OS 6.0.0.534 from Bell

Direct link.

BlackBerry 9300 official OS 6.0.0.534 from Virgin Mobile Canada

Download link

If you have either one of those devices you can also plug in your device and launch DM to install the update. A good advice is to always do a backup before any update, you don't want to run the risk of something going wrong, loosing all your settings and data.
