Back in mid-February Pandora updated to v1.1.7 and Nikolaus let us know that it was recently updated to v1.1.8. I have no idea what the change log is but you can help us make one in the comments.

How To Change the BlackBerry ID on a BlackBerry PlayBook

Posted: 27 Apr 2011 03:37 PM PDT

Change BlackBerry PlayBook Balckberry ID

When you first setup a BlackBerry PlayBook it asks you to register with a BlackBerry ID and then ties the whole PlayBook to that BlackBerry ID. I was actually asked last week by a user how to change this and had no idea other than wiping the device. Turns out that is what RIM proposes for you to do in their latest knowledge base article. I am guessing this is because they assume all the data on the device is associated with that BlackBerry ID and needs to be removed… The only other caveats are that all installed applications including the preloaded Need for Speed and Tetris applications will also be removed and have to be reinstalled.

Check out the knowledge base article on how to change the BlackBerry ID associated with a BlackBerry PlayBook below or at this link

When setting up the BlackBerry® PlayBook tablet, a BlackBerry ID is required to activate the tablet. This allows seamless access to a variety of BlackBerry® products and services such as the BlackBerry App World storefront.

Once this account has been configured during the initial setup, all activities on the BlackBerry tablet will be authenticated to that BlackBerry ID. If another BlackBerry ID is entered after the initial setup, the following message will be displayed:

In order to change the BlackBerry ID that has been activated to the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet on initial setup, a security wipe will need to be performed. To accomplish this, complete the steps below.

NOTE: Before performing a security wipe of the BlackBerry tablet, be advised of the following:

  • A security wipe of the BlackBerry tablet will remove any downloaded applications and media (Including pictures/video taken on the BlackBerry tablet or transferred via a PC)
    • To transfer media and documents saved on a BlackBerry PlayBook to a PC before a security wipe, see KB26068.
  • Applications purchased through BlackBerry App World on the BlackBerry tablet will still be associated to the BlackBerry ID they were purchased from but will be removed from the BlackBerry tablet upon a security wipe.
    • These purchased applications can be reinstalled through BlackBerry App World at a later time. Under the Uninstalled tab, tap the Reinstall button next to the application to reload
  • Any configuration changes made to the BlackBerry tablet (Including Bluetooth pairing information, settings changes, etc.) will be reset to defaults after a security wipe is performed
  • Depending on the amount of data stored and the capacity of the BlackBerry tablet (16 GB/32 GB/64 GB), the security wipe may take longer than expected. Ensure that the BlackBerry tablet is plugged into the power outlet to prevent power loss during the security wipe
  • After a security wipe, Tetris® and Need For Speed™ Undercover will be removed from the BlackBerry tablet. To reinstall these applications, complete the following:
    1. Open BlackBerry App World on the BlackBerry tablet
    2. Tap into the Search field
    3. Type EA Tetris and tap Return on the keyboard (Type EA Undercover to locate Need For Speed Undercover)
    4. Tap the Tetris for PlayBook icon (Should indicate the price is FREE)
    5. Tap Download

To perform a security wipe of the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet, complete the following:

  1. Tap the gear icon in the upper right corner to open the Options menu
  2. Tap Security from the listing on the left
  3. Enter blackberry to confirm the security wipe, then tap Wipe Data
  4. The BlackBerry PlayBook will then reset
  5. Once the PlayBook restarts, the initial setup process will be presented. Complete these steps and enter the correct BlackBerry ID when prompted.

RIM Explains The BlackBerry PlayBook Low and Dead Battery State

Posted: 27 Apr 2011 01:04 PM PDT

IMG_2850

I have been hearing from a few people that have let their BlackBerry PlayBook battery totally drain having issues charging it back up again. One managed to get it working by performing a hard reset and then leaving it charging. Another purchased the BlackBerry PlayBook rapid charger and that fixed it. I have not run into the issue myself since I have yet to go below 50% battery life on the device but its an important issue since RIM does not offer user replaceable batteries on the device.

RIM did post up a knowledge base article detailing the low battery state of the BlackBerry PlayBook. It is not the most informative but it does give us details on how it works. RIM tells us that:

When the battery level of the BlackBerry PlayBook reaches a level 0%, the tablet will automatically turn off.  The LED will blink in a sequence when attempting to Power On the device indicating a low charge, red blink and then followed by 5 yellow blinks.

This is because the BlackBerry PlayBook battery does not have enough charge to power up the tablet.

Their resolution is:

It is recommended to connect the BlackBerry PlayBook to the Rapid Wall Charger that came with your BlackBerry PlayBook, or one of the charging accessories listed:

  • BlackBerry PlayBook Rapid Charging Pod
  • BlackBerry Rapid Travel Charger
  • BlackBerry Premium Charger

Please leave BlackBerry PlayBook plugged in for approximately 40 minutes or until full charge is achieved.  Connecting to a computer to charge via USB will not be sufficient to charge the tablet.

Let us know if that works for you!

Rumor: BlackBerry 6.1 Is Now BlackBerry 7 But Not QNX Based

Posted: 27 Apr 2011 12:46 PM PDT

This is quite a surprise but according to Kevin over at CB RIM has decided to change the name of the next version of the BlackBerry OS from 6.1 to 7. Some weeks back Ronen mentioned that BlackBerry 7 would be a combination ot the tablet OS and the current BlackBerry OS code named Highlander. The reason is not yet know but we can expect to hear about it next week at BlackBerry World. This makes you wonder what RIM is really planning for BlackBerry OS with QNX and how soon we will see it. Personally I can’t wait to have it on devices, but if you have used a BlackBerry torch and the BlackBerry PlayBook the layout of the app icons feels a lot like BlackBerry 6 except for the way it handles app when they are open.

All you have to do is use the coupon code 50OFFSBB at checkout to get the deal.

Head on over to www.shopblackberry.com to see what you can get

How YOU can help bring DropBox to the Playbook

Posted: 27 Apr 2011 09:30 AM PDT

Dropbox - Secure backup, sync and sharing made easy.In the last few days since the PlayBook has been in my hot little hands, I have adopted it into my personal and professional life. I would have thought, with the SDK for the PlayBook being released months ago, that we would have seen a swath of popular apps on the release date. My hopes shall we say were shattered. Yes there are some great apps out there, and yes I know that there are more coming, but come on people. Amazon and Netflix should have had clients for their services out regardless of what they thought that the market would do with the PlayBook. My microwave can even stream Netflix movies!!

However there is one app that I have really been missing, as I also have an iPad, and that is DropBox. The ability for me to access my entire dropbox “filesystem” on the iPad makes up for several of the devices shortcomings, but why, after dropbox saw this, would they not produce something for the PlayBook? One thing that DropBox does is to allow users to vote on features they would like to see. There is already an item set up for the PlayBook, and about 450 people have requested it as of the time this is being written.

Lets show them what the BerryReview Army is capable of! Follow the link below (it will ask you to login to DropBox) and vote for a native PlayBook App.

https://www.dropbox.com/votebox/4753/blackberry-playbook-native-version

If enough of our loyal readers vote on this, perhaps we can send a strong enough message!

The Apps I would Like To See On the PlayBook

Posted: 27 Apr 2011 08:30 AM PDT

IMG_00000037_thumb1Until the native SDK is releases for the PlayBook developers are limited in some areas to make applications but there are some good tools out here already. There is quite a few applications on the PlayBook already but some of the ones that I tend to use the most are still missing. The PlayBook  has a lot going for it, the browser is awesome, the functionality including docs to go, adobe reader, I use those on a daily basis. So here is my wish list of PlayBook Apps:

  • Native Twitter app
  • BlackBerry Maps
  • TeleNav
  • Native RSS reader
  • A update to Adobe (with support for protected files)
  • SugarSync
  • TeamViewer
  • Qik for video chat
  • SocialScope
  • Amazon
  • Google Maps
  • Facebook, BBM, we know that eventually this apps will make it there.

Those are just some of the one that I though of while writing this post, but feel free to mention what else you like to see added on the comments below.

RIM Confirms Facebook and Twitter Apps for BlackBerry PlayBook

Posted: 27 Apr 2011 07:05 AM PDT

BlackBerry PlayBook Facebook Twitter

I have heard rumblings that RIM is working on native Twitter and Facebook apps for the BlackBerry PlayBook. Now we have documented proof of it courtesy of their latest document on the BlackBerry PlayBook Security Technical Overview. It details that there will be the following applications that run in personal mode instead of work mode:

  • Facebook
  • Twitter
  • Maps application
  • YouTube
  • Applications that a user downloads and installs on the tablet

I am not sure if that means RIM will also be porting BlackBerry Maps to the BlackBerry PlayBook but it is an obvious fit. Especially if it worked over Bridge mode! I am not sure if the YouTube app refers to the current one or a future one that will also allow you to upload to YouTube otherwise I see no reason for them to restrict it to "Personal Mode."

Let us know if you spot anything else! I am hoping for RIM to create a Google Talk and News Feeds app too!

RIM Details Security Features of BlackBerry PlayBook

Posted: 27 Apr 2011 07:00 AM PDT

BlackBerry PlayBook Security Model

Since RIM first announced the BlackBerry PlayBook I know many enterprise administrators and even regular users were curious about the security model. RIM has done quite a bit with BlackBerry Bridge but I noticed that they have published up a document that clearly details the whole security model of the BlackBerry PlayBook. It is actually quite cool how certain apps can run in work mode or personal mode and how RIM controls that and plans on allowing administrators to control it in the future. They even hint that future work applications will be able to access the corporate intranet through the BlackBerry Bridge without a VPN. Kind of cool!

If you are at all interested in how RIM secures the OS and bridge connection of the BlackBerry PlayBook I highly recommend reading their PDF guide titled "BlackBerry PlayBook Security Technical Overview." I started trying to summarize it but found that the summary was almost as long as the PDF… :) There are still quite a few questions that RIM still has to answer such as how BES admins will be able to push out applications and secure them but hopefully that will be coming at BlackBerry World next week! Let me know if you spot anything good!

Just to give you an idea of what it includes the guide explains the different ways the BlackBerry Bridge is protected from:

  • Brute-force attack
  • Online dictionary attack
  • Eavesdropping
  • Impersonating a smartphone
  • Man-in-the-middle attack
  • Small subgroup attack

Or how the different apps interact with work or personal mode:

The BlackBerry PlayBook tablet permits the following applications to run in work mode only:

  • BlackBerry Bridge
  • BlackBerry Messenger

The tablet permits the following applications to run in work mode or personal mode: •    Web browser (the web browser has separate processes, disk caches, download folders and HTML5 persistent files for work mode and personal mode)

  • Photo viewer
  • Media player
  • Email application
  • Calendar application
  • Contacts application
  • Document viewers such as Documents To Go or Adobe Reader
  • Files application

RIM Acquires Social Calendaring Application Tungle.Me

Posted: 27 Apr 2011 06:57 AM PDT

This one just in via TechCrunch: RIM is still on a shopping spree, this time it bought startup Tungle.Me, a social calendaring application/platform. I admit I had never heard about it, but TechCrunch describes it this way:

Tungle.Me offers users a free web-based application that lets you share calendars across companies and platforms, schedule meetings with individuals or groups inside or outside their company and propose multiple meeting times in invitations. The service currently syncs with a number of calendar applications, including Outlook, Google Calendar, and Apple iCal.

According to TechCrunch, the application is very popular, with users in hundreds of universities and a large number of all Fortune 1000 companies.

I have seen quite a few people complain about the calendaring capabilities of the BlackBerry, or rather lack thereof. While most consumers don’t need any kind of advanced features, executives tend to resent the lack of this or that other thing. Let’s hope it is good enough to quell such cravings and that, yes, of course, it is added to the Playbook as well. If you want to know more about this latest acquisition, look no further than RIM’s own official announcement.

BlackBerry Bold Touch Wi-Fi Alliance Certified

Posted: 27 Apr 2011 06:00 AM PDT

BlackBerry_Bold_Touch_CertifiedWe have seen videos, pictures, and spec sheets fo the BlackBerry Bold Touch, and now we have further confirmation of the device. This time is through the Wi-Fi alliance which has issued a certification for the device Wi-Fi.  They list the device with the model number 9900, also confirming that the device will have 2.4GHz & 5GHz Wi-Fi bands on board.

We expect this device to get announced at BlackBerry World next week. Hopefully they will have them on hand so we can play with them. The only thing is that last year RIM announced a few devices at WES but they took a really long time to get them out on the market. Lets hope RIM pushes this devices out on the field soon because it has been a while since they launched a good looking device.
