Tether for BlackBerry 50% Off Today Only – $24.99

Posted: 29 Apr 2011 02:13 AM PDT

Back due to popular demand the team running our store is running a half off sale for Tether. The popular Tether for BlackBerry app is 50% off for today only which translates to $24.99. That's a great deal considering the crazy regular price of $49.95.

The Tether app attempts to make it easier for users to tether their BlackBerry to their computer. That way you can easily go online using your BlackBerry's data plan without having to fiddle with APN's and trying to get around carrier restrictions yourself.

You can pick up Tether for BlackBerry in the desktop store at this link (alternative link) or from your BlackBerry at this link.

Also make sure to check out Vicky's review of Tether where it received a 10/10 star rating.

Jim Balsillie Confirms BlackBerry 6.1 is Now BlackBerry 7 On Investors Call

Posted: 28 Apr 2011 03:39 PM PDT

appworld.blackberry.com_031RIM Co-CEO JIm Balsillie just confirmed that OS 6.1 will in fact be called OS 7 while on an investors call. Just yesterday we mentioned this as a rumor but we did not think we would find out until BlackBerry World next week.  According to the guys at n4bb who were able to listen to the investors call the reasons given were that this new OS will have liquid graphics, magnetometer, and much more making the change to the OS totally different from BB OS 6.  So next week hopefully we will be live from BlackBerry World reporting all the good news it has to offer.

FAQ: Transfer Files to the BlackBerry PlayBook Over Wi-Fi or USB

Posted: 28 Apr 2011 03:15 PM PDT

BlackBerry PlayBook Mac File Transfer

While file sharing and transferring to a BlackBerry PlayBook may not be a challenge for the technically savvy I know quite a few people who need tips and pointers. I was in the middle of writing up a great article on how to connect and transfer files to a BlackBerry PlayBook over Wi-Fi and one of my friends at RIM pointed out that RIM already has a pretty nice guide. I even learned a thing or two on how to get it to show up as a hard drive on a Mac over USB until Desktop Manager for Mac is updated to support the PlayBook.

RIM does a nice job of explaining how to connect to the BlackBerry PlayBook file system over Wi-Fi or USB (from both a Mac and PC). Keep in mind that when you are transferring large files like videos I would recommend not doing that over Wi-Fi since it could take an inordinate amount of time. On the other hand Wi-Fi transfers are perfect for music, images, documents, and other files.

The following sections outline different methods of transferring files to and from the BlackBerry PlayBook.

Wi-Fi Sharing

Complete the following steps to share files over a Wi-Fi connection:

  1. From the BlackBerry PlayBook home screen, select the settings icon.
  2. Select Storage and Sharing.
  3. Toggle Wi-Fi Sharing to ON.
  4. Tap Properties to verify network identification information. (PlayBook name, password etc)
  5. From a Windows or Mac based computer on the same network as the BlackBerry PlayBook, navigate to the IP address of the PlayBook which can be found under Settings > About > Network.
    1. On a Windows computer, open the Run dialog box and type \\127.1.1.1 (where 127.1.1.1 should be replaced with the actual IP address of the BlackBerry PlayBook)
    2. On a Mac computer, select Go -> Connect to Server… and type smb://127.1.1.1 (where 127.1.1.1 should be replaced with the actual IP address of the BlackBerry PlayBook)
  6. Users will then connect to the media folder which contains several subfolders such as documents, music, photos, videos etc.  Users can then move files between the computer and these folders.

File Sharing with a Mac via USB connection

To share files between a Mac and the BlackBerry PlayBook, BlackBerry Device Manager will need to be installed. Complete the following steps to install BlackBerry Device Manager:

  1. Connect the BlackBerry PlayBook to the Mac.
  2. On the desktop or within Finder, double click BlackBerry PlayBook CD.
  3. Double click the BlackBerry Device Manager Installer to start the installation process.
  4. After reviewing the Read Me and License Agreement click Continue Installation.
  5. Reboot the computer when prompted.
  6. After the reboot is complete and the PlayBook is started, a message may be presented stating that a new network interface has been detected.  If this is the case, click on Network Preferences and click Apply.
  7. After the PlayBook has been setup in Network Preferences, the PlayBook share will appear on the desktop whenever the PlayBook is connected to the computer.
  8. Click the Playbook icon on the desktop to display the PlayBook share.  Users can then move files between the computer and the PlayBook.

File Sharing with a Windows PC via USB connection

To share files between a Windows based PC and the BlackBerry PlayBook, BlackBerry Device Manager will need to be installed. Complete the following steps to install BlackBerry Device Manager:

  1. Connect the BlackBerry PlayBook to the computer via USB cable.
  2. If BlackBerry Device Manager is not yet installed, the PlayBook will display a screen entitled Installing Drivers.
  3. On the computer, double click the BlackBerry PlayBook CD drive icon.
  4. Open the Drivers folder.
  5. Double click Setup.exe
  6. After selecting the appropriate region and accepting the License Agreement select Install.
  7. Select Finish and then OK to the prompt confirming that the PlayBook will need to be disconnected and then reconnected prior to use.
  8. Once reconnected to the computer, the BlackBerry PlayBook will be mounted as a Network Drive labeled PlayBook [PIN: 500AAAAA].  Double click the network drive icon to access the PlayBook folders.  Users can then move files between the computer and the PlayBook.

Free App! sTamped for BlackBerry

Posted: 28 Apr 2011 10:31 AM PDT

sTamped for BlackBerry is a nifty little application, though there have been several like it available in the past, that adds some “stamps” to photos that you have on your BlackBerry. Some of these are pretty cute and its FREE!

Go grab it while it is still free Here

****Note****

It does look as though the app is free, and they include some free stamps with the app, but if you want additional stamps you have to pay $1.99 for each stamp. Maybe turns some people off, but still may be worth some laughs.

Thanks to Tashanna for sending this one in.

Big Red Stabs PlayBook in the Heart?

Posted: 28 Apr 2011 10:02 AM PDT

**Update**

We have had several of our readers comment and let us know that the issue, and only with some people, is that Verizon started blocking (as in it worked before and not today) bridge access via Bluetooth. Many of the commenters below say that this cannot happen and I am unsure. We are bringing you the information we receive as we receive it. If you ARE having these difficulties over Bridge, pleas let us know at tips@berryreview.com

*

We have been getting some reports from Verizon Wireless BlackBerry users who have been using their new PlayBook’s bridge function to access network resources from the playbook. Well it looks at though Big Red was not too fond of this idea and has decided to put a stop to tethering.

I am hoping that this is not true, and won’t be able to verify for myself until later on tonight, but if anyone has any experience on this please let us know in the comments or in the forums. This could be a real blow to the PlayBook if carriers decide that they have a responsibility to milk even more money out of us just to use the base functionality of our device.

Do they really expect everyone to pay for data on a BB AND a seperate connection for a tablet? Come on Verizon.

Canyon Defense: Fun Flash Game Works Great on Playbook

Posted: 28 Apr 2011 09:15 AM PDT

I haven’t had much chance to look for fun flash games for the PlayBook, but I came across a gem on MiniClip.com that works great on the PlayBook browser. I haven’t been able to figure out other games that require a keyboard for movement (although I’ve heard some online games actually makes use of the PlayBook’s accelerometer), but this one is only controlled by left clicking the mouse so it works nicely with the PlayBook’s touchscreen. The only glitch I found is that you are unable to confirm where you place towers, so be careful where you tap.

There are a bunch of unlockable features and cool powerups. Try Canyon Defense on your PlayBook or computer. Let us know if you’ve found any other cool games online that work well with the PlayBook!

aMail Steps Up When RIM Falls Down? PlayBook Email!

Posted: 28 Apr 2011 08:33 AM PDT

One of the most common critiques of the PlayBook, even before launch, was the lack of a native email, calendar and contacts application. While RIM has promised that they would take care of these issues in an update that should be out soon, 3rd party application developers have  come forth to bridge the gap (yes pun intended).

aiFlex developed aMail, which is a native email client for the BlackBerry PlayBook that can support up to 10 accounts using various forms of authentication and easy to use presets for your favorite email services (gmail, hotmail etc.) The application has been submitted to AppWorld and is as of this posting, still awaiting approval.

Check out a preview video for aMail – aMail for PlayBook

More ScreenShots and Features List after the break-

aMail looks as though they have some pretty neat stuff going on with this application, my only concern is that these third party developers are spending an awful lot of time working on applications that RIM has promised will be out soon. It would be a shame to see the native app launch before aMail receives approval.

Features:

-High Performance Native Application

  • Uses the best features available to sync with mail servers
  • High performance and rapid message download from accounts

-Secure Access and local file security

  • Supports common standards of mail system POP3 and IMAP4
  • Access multiple mailboxes securely (uses SSL / TLS)
  • User account details are always secure
  • Local mail files are encrypted

-Easy Message Viewing

  • Swipe down for email accounts overview.
  • Use your on device soft keyboard, swiping up from the lower bezel edge for text input.
  • Animated message transitions.

-Convenience and Ease of Use

  • Manages up to 10 email accounts separately from within a single App
  • Work offline when not connected and synchronize later
  • Direct type input
  • Smoother interface than using Webmail in local browser

Coming soon attachments, multitouch gestures.

Thanks to CrackBerry for the find

Using A BlackBerry Torch On T-Mobile? Looks Like MMS Works Now

Posted: 28 Apr 2011 08:00 AM PDT

37128I been using a BlackBerry Torch 9800 Unlocked on T-Mobile, and if you are one of them you know that MMS among other things did not work correctly. The problem with using the Torch on T-Mobile when it first launched was that for some if the service books settings were not transfer from your old device, your new BlackBerry had no MMS options, no internet browser. If you did transfer the settings correctly you had the option to send MMS but when you received one the images were scaled down to a small image.

It looks like T-Mobile fixed that or supports the device now because all the sudden my MMS pictures appear normal now instead of a really small image.   So if you are running a BlackBerry Torch on T-Mobile network let us know if you noticed the same thing if not try resending your service books and see if that takes care of it. I lived without having MMS on my device for almost eight months now to the point that I was getting used to it but am glad it works now.

Get instant WiFi Connection with HiWiFi App for your BlackBerry.

Posted: 28 Apr 2011 07:00 AM PDT

Popular BlackBerry theme designer…Hedone Design has recently launched i-Mentalist, their new BlackBerry application developer site. Their latest release, HiWiFi offers your BlackBerry instant WiFi access to open networks in your area once the application is open. According to i-Mentalist “HiWiFi application is a powerful wireless network manager. It provides automatic WLAN connection and informs you about available WLANs. With HiWiFi you can avoid using data plan and save your money while roaming, you can choose your favorite Hotspots and you can be alerted by LED indicator when you are connected to a Hotspot.” I tested the application myself and it did indeed set up access to open WiFi spots for me and let me know instantly when it was connected. HiWiFi is available for most BlackBerry devices at a cost of $8.99. More information and purchase link can be found at i-Mentalist.Com.

Screenshots of Poynt “Send to Phone” Feature for PlayBook App

Posted: 28 Apr 2011 05:59 AM PDT

tether_playbook_2

One of the areas that RIM has not yet opened up for developers is the ability to send information from the BlackBerry PlayBook to your BlackBerry phone. I know for a fact that RIM is working on a way for developers to do this and have heard rumors that they have been considering using your BlackBerry ID, PIN, Push Alert, Bridge, and other ways.

blackberry_pair

Until then Poynt is working on bypassing that limitation by creating their own "Send to Phone" feature. With this feature you will be able to use Poynt on your BlackBerry PlayBook and send an actionable alert to your BlackBerry phone. The feature uses RIM's Push API to send the alert and will be used to allow you to call, add a number to your address book, and use the directions feature on your phone.

Cool right?
