BlackBerry PlayBook OS v1.0.3.1868 Available OTA

Posted: 02 May 2011 10:18 PM PDT

If you have been waiting to get a BlackBerry PlayBook OS with video chat and new features, well the wait is over. The OS has been pushed over the air to most BlackBerry PlayBook owners. Just make sure you are connected over Wi-Fi and check on the drop down menu on your PlayBook select software updates and it should download over the air. Thanks to Nikolaous for for the tip.

More Details on BlackBerry PlayBook OS 1.0.3 – Coming Tonight

Posted: 02 May 2011 02:41 PM PDT

RIM told us that the BlackBerry PlayBook OS 1.0.3 was dropping later today and now we know more from the official BlackBerry Blog. Check out what they have to say below.

BlackBerry PlayBook Video Chat

The Video Chat application enables video and voice over Wi-Fi calling between BlackBerry PlayBook tablets in peer-to-peer or enterprise environments using your BlackBerry® ID profile. Here are some of the features I'm really excited about:

One-Click Calls – With just one click you can make a call from your Video Chat contact list, log of recent calls or simply by entering the BlackBerry ID email address of the person you want to call.
Incoming Call Notifications – You will receive a notification pop-up when a new video call comes in, allowing you to accept the call as either a video or voice call, or decline the call. For those quiet moments — such as when you're watching a movie, playing a game or listening to music — you will also have the ability to simply set the "Do Not Disturb" option and the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet will automatically ignore all incoming calls.
Powerful In-Call Functions – By using the picture-in-picture function you can easily preview what your camera is seeing prior to placing the call to see the video feed you will be sending. You can also easily switch cameras from front to rear so your friends can see what you see, and for private moments you can mute/unmute audio or make or take calls using voice only.
Friends List – BlackBerry PlayBook Video Chat comes complete with a Friends List for maintaining your contacts. A friendly name and a picture can easily be added to a contact to personalize the entry and a Call Log makes it simple to keep track of who called, as well as when and what calls were missed. Friends are added using their BlackBerry ID profile.
Video Chat Multitasking – Thanks to the power of the BlackBerry Tablet OS and its true multitasking capabilities, video and voice over Wi-Fi chats can continue running in the background while you interact with other applications.
HDMI Video Chat – In addition to chatting using the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet's high-resolution screen, Video Chat supports HDMI output when in 'Mirror Mode', allowing you to output what is on your BlackBerry PlayBook tablet's screen to a larger HD television or monitor.

BlackBerry® Messenger (BBM™) Support via BlackBerry Bridge

BlackBerry Tablet OS v1.0.3 expands the BlackBerry Bridge experience to include BBM (woot! Ed.). BlackBerry smartphone users with BlackBerry Bridge enabled can now mirror their smartphone BBM on the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet's large high-resolution display over a secure Bluetooth® connection. BBM via BlackBerry Bridge features:

Full BBM Chat Functionality – Either one-to-one or multi-person chats.
BBM Status Updates – Let your friends know how you feel about your new BlackBerry PlayBook tablet!
Photo Sharing – Via the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet or your BlackBerry smartphone SD card.
BBM Alerts – New BlackBerry Messenger alerts will appear on the BlackBerry PlayBook notification ribbon.

Document Editing via BlackBerry Bridge

In addition to BBM, BlackBerry Tablet OS v1.0.3 now adds document-editing support via BlackBerry Bridge to the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet. This means that documents sitting on your BlackBerry smartphone can now be accessed via secure Bluetooth connection, edited on the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet's large high-resolution display and then saved back to your BlackBerry smartphone. Here are some important aspects of document editing via BlackBerry Bridge to note:

File Access – Access to your pictures, documents, spreadsheets and slideshows via either email over BlackBerry Bridge or the BlackBerry Bridge files application. With BlackBerry Bridge, you can view photos and office documents and edit spreadsheets and text-based documents.
BlackBerry® Internet Service Support – When bridged to a BlackBerry smartphone with a BIS service plan, users can select to either save their document locally on the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet or back onto their BlackBerry smartphone SD card.
BlackBerry® Enterprise Server Support – When bridged to a BlackBerry smartphone operating on a BlackBerry Enterprise Server, documents automatically get saved back to the BlackBerry smartphone SD card to help ensure corporate data is kept secure.

BlackBerry Messenger, Twitter, and Facebook Usage Stats from RIM

Posted: 02 May 2011 12:36 PM PDT

IMG_3255

In a first for RIM we had Tom Goguen, VP of Collaboration and Social Networking @RIM, share usage stats for Facebook and Twitter for BlackBerry along with the usual BlackBerry Messenger update. BBM users are now up to 43 million worldwide along with over 2 million new users a month. Pretty crazy stuff when you consider their 110% growth rate in the last 12 months. The social space has been a real success story for RIM.

What really interested me is that RIM finally shared stats for Facebook for BlackBerry and Twitter for BlackBerry. Facebook for BlackBerry has 33.4 million monthly active users which is 112% increase from the same month last year. They also have 7.2 million Twitter for BlackBerry active users which is 101% more than Sept 2010.

What do you think of those stats? Its pretty crazy considering the fact that there are only 50+ million BlackBerry users out there and many of them are restricted by BES IT policies.

Native Facebook App for PlayBook Coming in May! Pictures!

Posted: 02 May 2011 12:21 PM PDT

 IMG_3264

It looks like RIM will be getting the BlackBerry PlayBook the first native tablet client for Facebook. Facebook traditionally has not made clients for tablets preferring them to use their website. RIM just showed off some pictures of the Facebook client for the BlackBerry PlayBook and it looks pretty sweet. It was running on the presenters device over HDMI. Just think about that. Want to show your Facebook pictures off on your TV… Yeah its that simple.

Posted: 02 May 2011 12:15 PM PDT

IMG_3263

RIM let out that Social Feeds will be updated in BlackBerry OS 7 to v2.0 of Social Feeds. I guess that means older devices won't be getting the upgrade but hopefully our hybrid underground will find a way… I like the universal search integration and the other updates are perks.

Key new features:

  • Custom Views and Notifications
  • Bookmarks
  • Keyword Search
  • Read/Unread Status Indication

It's a Super App

  • Community-Specific Actions
  • Universal Search Integration

Feel free to suggest what RIM should add to the app in the comments and I will try to pass it along.

Any Idea What This BlackBerry OS 7 Geolocation Feature Is?

Posted: 02 May 2011 11:45 AM PDT

IMG_3219

One of the features I spotted while taking pictures of the BlackBerry Bold 9900 was a new Geolocation menu. I did not manage to get one of the project managers to answer the question but I thought I would throw it out there for now. I know a little bit about GPS logging and it looks like it is able to keep a KML log of your GPS coordinates and upload it to a server to track your location. I am not sure exactly what it would be used for…

More Details on BlackBerry Video Chat from Mike Lazaridis

Posted: 02 May 2011 11:27 AM PDT

IMG_3253

Mike Lazaridis is currently talking about BlackBerry Video Chat which is launching tonight for the BlackBerry PlayBook. He is dropping a few more details than we heard in the announcement which is pretty sweet. I am actually liking to hear where this is going.

  • Video Chat is deployed in the RIM cloud and managed by the RIM NOC
  • The calls are initialized from the RIM cloud but then is done point to point
  • Mike says that once developers get their hands on this API for point to point they will be able to do some cool things (Sounds similar to the BBM Social Platform)
  • Uses BBID (your BlackBerry ID email address) to find friend and initiate a call
  • New STUN/TURN device discovery media routing services
    • In case you don't know what STUN or TURN are let me explain a bit. It is what is called a NAT (Network Address Translation) Transversal System. That means that it uses this technology to be able to receive data behind a firewall. In other words no need to forward ports on your router…
  • New SIP based call control system
    • This could have some interesting implications in the future with RIM allowing companies to tie this into their internal PBX systems for campus based video calling.

Can't wait until this launches tonight!

PS: I just love his last snipe at the end of his talk saying that the reason they chose QNX and building their own platform over using a commoditized solution (Think Android and Windows Mobile 7).

BlackBerry Bold 9000 Style Revived in BlackBerry Bold 9900

Posted: 02 May 2011 09:48 AM PDT

IMG_3164 9000blk_FrontNoShadow

When I first held the BlackBerry Bold 9900 the first thought that came to mind was that RIM has brought back the best part of the BlackBerry Bold 9000. It has the same beautiful and larger keyboard that RIM made famous with the BlackBerry Bold 9000. It has a similar silver siding but this time RIM made it with stainless steel instead of the previous chrome colored plastic so it is much higher quality.

IMG_3201 IMG_3202

I know quite a few people who always wanted to see RIM bring back the BlackBerry Bold 9000 larger style with a faster processor, more RAM, and an updated OS. I spoke to one of the project managers for the BlackBerry Bold 9900 and he told me that was one of RIM's main considerations for the 9900.

IMG_3199 IMG_3200

I am super excited that RIM has brought back the 9000 style packing some serious features like a VGA 640×480 screen and a 1.2Ghz processor. Anybody else excited to get their Bold 9000 style back? I don't have the biggest fingers in the world but the extra space on the original Bold was awesome!

BlackBerry PlayBook OS 1.0.3 Coming Today – PlayBook OS Updates as Fast as Every Two Weeks?

Posted: 02 May 2011 08:27 AM PDT

IMG_3248

RIM has confirmed that the BlackBerry PlayBook will be getting OS 1.0.3 today skipping over the 1.0.1.1790 version that didn't make it out the door. This new version brings BlackBerry Video Chat which is nice. Also at the press briefing we learned that BlackBerry PlayBooks will be getting OS updates as often as every two weeks. They are not promising that it will come every two weeks but that seems to be the minimum time between updates.

BlackBerry OS 7 Not Coming to Older Devices

Posted: 02 May 2011 08:10 AM PDT

IMG_3168

It sadly makes sense but RIM confirmed it today. BlackBerry OS 7 with its liquid graphics and features are not coming to the BlackBerry devices currently in market. It makes sense since the features like liquid graphics (CPU and GPU based), mobile hotspot, NFC, compass, HD video recording, and more are all features that are dependant on hardware.

Its sad to see the Torch and 9780 already obsolete but once you get your hands on a 9900 with OS 7 you will understand what the Torch and BlackBerry 6 was supposed to be.

BlackBerry OS 7 Browser Adds Developer Tools & More

Posted: 02 May 2011 08:05 AM PDT

IMG_3187

RIM has already spilled the beans on quite a few of the upcoming improvements in BlackBerry OS 7. We have heard of the JIT (Just In Time) JavaScript rendering along with the faster processing of pages along with other features like HTML5 Video. One thing I have also noticed when playing with the device itself is that RIM has added an option for Developer Tools. I am not sure if it is similar to what they added in the PlayBook browser but I truly hope so!!!

IMG_3189 IMG_3182

The other thing I noticed is they have made the tab switcher larger. For some reason it chokes on the BerryReview mobile site logo but other than that it renders in seconds.

I just got a bit of trigger happy fun with the BlackBerry Bold 9900 and I have to say I am impressed. The software is still a bit buggy but there was not ONE HOURGLASS! It was awesome. RIM Talks BlackBerry Bold 9900 Design and OS 7

RIM has been on stage for the last hour or so talking BlackBerry OS 7 and the BlackBerry Bold 9900 and 9930. Kevin went up and stole my question asking about the battery life on the device with a 1.2Ghz processor which RIM threw back a quasi answer and he didn't dig further. They just promise that "Battery life is important and considered throughout the whole design process."

Here are some things that stuck out to me:

  • It has a Stainless Steel casing instead of the chrome colored case that RIM has used in the past
  • The back case has a glass epoxy back instead of the traditional leather of the Bold line
  • It has a bigger keyboard on a smaller device according to RIM
  • They added voice search to the universal search experience
  • Liquid graphics is an "experience" (I am thinking no hourglasses)
