| Acaras File Manager for the BlackBerry PlayBook – Network Support Coming! Posted: 20 May 2011 02:28 PM PDT
Right now file managers for the BlackBerry PlayBook are far and in between. I tried one other free one and it simply did not work. I spotted File Manager by Acaras Mobile Software yesterday and I was surprised to learn it is actually pretty good. Not perfect but definitely useful. For $4.99 is is not super expensive but it really is functionality that RIM should have added to the OS natively. I have been bugging some of my friends at RIM that it needs to be included in the next OS build.
Acaras File Manager only works on the files in your shared folder and does not allow you to access system files but that is not really something most people would need. They also use an odd tabs feature that does not work like I would want it to. Otherwise it is a pretty nice app. Features of Acaras File Manager include:
The coolest part is that they are planning on adding the ability to browse your network shares with a future free upgrade. I am not sure exactly how they are going to pull that off without RIM adding it natively to the OS but who knows. Maybe they plan on porting Samba once the Native SDK is released? | RIM Responds to Rumor of Poor PlayBook Sales – Says its “Inconsistent” Posted: 20 May 2011 02:18 PM PDT
I decided not to post the surprisingly vague rumor by BGR this morning about "BlackBerry PlayBook sales miss targets by over 90% at major retailer, 'much higher' return rate than XOOM." It seemed to be either a clever ploy to get RIM to respond with the actual sales figures or simply an unsubstantiated rumor from a "trusted source from a major big box retailer." The brilliance of it was that it put RIM in a pickle. RIM either had to respond to the rumor or let it stand. If they let it stand then it would be assumed that the rumor is correct or nearly so. If they responded with actual sales figures then they would be "commenting on rumors" which they always say they don't do. Here is what they had to say to the BGR about their rumor:

i-Mentalist has started their app development off fairly strong with the release of HiWiFi. HiWiFi runs in the background, and auto scans for WiFi networks, and will automatically connect to the ones that are open, or that have the password saved on your BlackBerry. It also categorizes the ones that are password protected in yellow, or completely unavailable in red as well as categorizes ones that are untested in gray. This app can be a true companion for anyone traveling or looking to save some money on their data plan if they do not have unlimited. HiWiFi can be found in the BerryReview Store for $4.99 and is compatible with BlackBerry 8220, 8350i, 8520/30, 89xx, 9000, 9300/30, 9520/50, 9650/70, 97xx, and 9800. We just saw OS 6.0.0.570 drop for the 9780 and 9300 and now we have OS 6.0.0.576 for the 9700 and 9300. The team at N4BB (via rr_yy) managed to spot this one but as no idea what is new in this version. Let us know what you find in the comments!

| Free AutoTextBackup Saves Your AutoText Entries So You Don’t Lose Them Posted: 20 May 2011 09:54 AM PDT
One feature that I love about my BlackBerry is the AutoText feature (or Word Substitution, which is the name RIM gave this feature in OS6). For those of you who aren't familiar with AutoText, it's basically a user definable spell check of sorts. But it has other very useful features too. For example, in my auto text database I have shortcuts set up for some of my more common phrases: bb becomes "BlackBerry," dl becomes "download," db becomes "Dropbox," zz becomes "I love you too, but I'm driving right now so please stop texting me – I don't want to crash and die!" I particularly love the last one because it always gets me a response of "how'd you type that so fast while you're driving?" As useful as AutoText is, there's a major flaw with it that increasingly causes great frustration among us BB Addicts: AutoText entries from OS5, and sometimes even from lower versions off OS6, won't restore when you perform an OS upgrade. This isn't a big deal for those of us who only have 4 or 5 AutoText entries. When you start having more, it starts to get irritating. Several of my friends have lost thousands of entries – yeah, literally thousands. RIM themselves have shown a disappointing lack of concern over the issue. AN example of this is there technical support post KB25616, where RIM addresses the problem (at least for wireless upgrades) and gives the following solution: "Re-enter the missing auto text entries when the wireless update is complete." Luckily, TsunGSoft has given us a solution: an app called AutoTextBackup. AutoTextBackup is a simple app that does what the name says it does. Best of all, it's free!
Download it and you get a nifty little icon right on your homescreen.
When you open the app, you are presented with a very simple user interface, with only three options: Backup, Restore, and Delete.
Clicking the backup and restore buttons do exactly what you would expect them to do. The backup is stored right on the root of your SD card.
The dev said that there's still a lot of things to be done with this app, so hopefully there'll be some updates too! | RIM Traveling EMEA for Developer “Meet the PlayBook” Events Posted: 20 May 2011 09:20 AM PDT
Now that RIM has formally announced that they will be having a DevCon in Europe they seem to be making a bigger push to engage developers there and throughout the EMEA. The latest effort in that vein is the announcement of four "Meet the PlayBook" events scattered around the region. I am not sure what made RIM choose these cities but I am hoping it is based on interest. Here are the event dates and locations: Each of the events is running a parallel business and technology track on the same day so there should be something for everybody. | RIM Confirms Dates for BlackBerry World 2012 Posted: 20 May 2011 08:15 AM PDT
BlackBerry World 2011 just ended and RIM was kind enough to announce the dates for BlackBerry World 2012. The event will be happening in the first week of May again from May 1st until the 3rd and will be in Orlando Florida. RIM even threw up a page where you can sign up for updates about BlackBerry World 2012. Before then we still have BlackBerry DevCon Asia, BlackBerry DevCon Europe, and BlackBerry DevCon Americas. | When Will The Next PlayBook OS Update Come? What Will It Include? Posted: 20 May 2011 06:24 AM PDT
When the PlayBook launched last month it started receiving OS updates on a consistent basis.The last update to the BlackBerry PlayBook OS came on May 3rd during BlackBerry World. While there we learned that RIM would be pushing out OS updates as often as every two weeks. Right now we are well past that two week period and it has me wondering. When will the next PlayBook OS update come and what features will it bring to the table? While I am loving my BlackBerry PlayBook I can see the potential there and RIM has quite a few features in store. For example, when will developers get access to notifications on the BlackBerry PlayBook or be able to push updates?
