RIM Explains What PlayBook OS Update Means to Devs

Posted: 21 Jun 2011 02:47 AM PDT

IMG_00000420

I am still trying to figure out what the benefit of Flash 10.3 and AIR 3.7 bring to the BlackBerry PlayBook in last nights update. I am assuming newer version numbers are better but the change log for AIR and Flash don't really have much in terms of details for the PlayBook. From what I can tell there are some possible video improvements in Flash if devs are using a Stage compatible player but I am not sure how many sites are using one.

Still RIM has performed a decent attempt of stating what the updates mean for developers on their DevBlog. Beyond the fact that you can now compile apps against AIR 2.7 I am at a loss. If you can figure out what they are saying let me know in the comments.

Copier Jams at RIM Headquarters! (Humor & Video)

Posted: 20 Jun 2011 06:08 PM PDT

officespace printer smash

(insert media source) Developing Breaking Hot Exclusive Bullshit!!!

"Trusted sources and unnamed insiders reported today at Research In Motion’s Headquarters at Phillip Street in Waterloo, Ontario, that one of the back-up copiers on the fourth floor briefly jammed this morning. A sheet of paper went all "shready" while winding its way through the copier and got bungled up, causing the copier to produce error messages. Technicians were able to free the damaged paper, but it could not be salvaged and had to be ritually destroyed. An unnamed employee caught the ritual on video seen below:

Desktop Video Link | Mobile Video Link

Compounding RIM’s difficulties, the technicians got all inky-black stuff on their hands, so that soap and water had to be applied, then rinsed off, followed by a drying procedure which is believed to have involved either toweling or one of those noisy air blowers.

RIM executives have refused to comment on the incident. There is no guarantee that the copier, or conceivably other copiers at RIM, might, in the future be subject to jams. RIM’s refusal to acknowledge or address in detail this morning’s cascading catastrophe calls into further doubt, the future viability of the company.

Sorry guys I couldn't help but post this to ease some of the anti-RIM tension building up these past few days with humor. Its almost like picking on RIM has become a contest sport in the media. PB Forever pointed out this brilliant parody thread on CrackBerry forums written by Mmcpher and I could not stop laughing… Make sure to let Mmcpher know if you enjoyed it and I really hope he doesn't mind the publicity and my small edits.

Rumor: Verizon Data Tiers Coming With Prices Worse than AT&T

Posted: 20 Jun 2011 02:38 PM PDT

unbelievable-bill

So you thought you had it bad with AT&T and their tiered data plans at 2GB for $25? According to a new rumor by Droid-Life users on Verizon are about to get it worse. According to that rumor Verizon will be changing its data tier to 2GB for $30 which is obviously $5 more than AT&T's already stingy data plan tiers. If you want to get the same 5GB you get today you will have to pony up $50 a month or $80 for 10GB.

Verizon Rumored PlansAT&T Current Plans
2GB – $30/month
4GB – $50/month including tethering
5GB – $50/month
7GB – $70/month with tethering
10GB – $80/month
12GB – $100/month with tethering
200MB – $15/month
2GB – $25/month
4GB – $45/month including tethering
NOTE: from here on down its $10 per 1GB unless you are on the 200MB plan where it is $15 for another 200MB

If you want tethering added to your data plan you can get an additional 2GB added to your plan for $20/month. That translates into 4GB for $50/month, 7GB for $70/month, and 12GB for $100/month. In other words Verizon is also charging an extra $5 more than AT&T for 4GB of data with tethering. On the other hand Verizon is charging $5 more for 5GB instead of 4GB for tethering. Tablet plans are priced at 2GB for $30 instead of the 1GB for $20 current plan. There is no difference between 3G and 4G devices in these tiers according to the rumor.

There is even a new email that is going to Verizon employees hinting that these structured data plans are coming without the details. Luckily current users will be grandfathered into their current plans but any hope of tiers getting cheaper anytime soon seems to be going out the window. Maybe that is good for the data sipping BlackBerrys and RIM. These new tiers are rumored to come once the unlimited data promotion on Verizon ends with these plans taking effect for new customers on July 7th.

This is all currently in rumor stage but this does sound like typical Verizon…

RIM Pushes Devices Through Carrier Acceptance – What’s New?

Posted: 20 Jun 2011 12:36 PM PDT

Problems

The latest rumor on the net started by the BGR is that RIM is pushing carriers to pass their upcoming devices through carrier acceptance. According to the BGR source RIM is telling carriers that they must approve these devices even though they normally would not pass the carriers Technical Acceptance process. This source says that RIM is telling carriers that the devices must be approved "no matter what – with bugs and problems."

The irony is that the source then goes on to say how this is exactly how RIM first got the BlackBerry Bold 9000 with OS 5.0 and 3G through technical acceptance. So the question is what exactly is new? RIM has strong armed carriers all the time to get their devices accepted. They practically always offer a last minute update or an update right after launch that addresses many of the bugs. Then carriers proceed to put those updates through carrier acceptance so we can actually get the updates. Shouldn't we be cheering RIM on?

This is exactly what RIM's co-CEO's said on their last earnings call. The thing holding up their devices is this main hurdle of technical acceptance on the radio stack for BlackBerry 7.0 on Qualcomm Snapdragon processors. Once that is approved it will only have to been slightly tweaked for different devices.

The true question users should be asking is why RIM shouldn't be pushing carriers to approve the devices? Isn't that exactly what users have been asking for? Don't get me wrong. Users don't like buggy devices but as a previous owner of a Rogers BlackBerry Bold 9000 months before it passed AT&T technical acceptance I can easily say the 9000 was worth it. So if RIM has been doing this for years what exactly is the big deal? That they might get away with it? It seems like everybody is complaining about RIM not getting devices out the door and then turning around and not liking how they are working to get them out the door faster…

I am not advocating for buggy new BlackBerrys but it has become pretty common that bugs are a fact of life in a fast moving development process. Why should RIM be different? Just take the Android bug that sent your SMS to the wrong contact… Or the iOS alarm clock bug… Sounds a bit one sided.

Marvell Providing Processors for “Multiple Next Generation BlackBerrys”

Posted: 20 Jun 2011 11:27 AM PDT

BlackBerry Torch guts

We know that RIM is moving to Qualcomm Snapdragon processors for their upcoming top of the line BlackBerry smartphones with 1.2Ghz processors. We know that RIM is putting a Marvell 800Mhz processor in the upcoming BlackBerry Next Gen Curve but a new statement by Marvell makes me wonder if there is another device. Marvell CFO Clyde Hosein said on Friday

that the company hasn't lost all of its RIM business and it will be offering processors for "multiple" next-generation BlackBerry that should enter in the markets later this year. via USAMarketNews

Ashley pointed this out in the forum and I thought I would extend the speculation as to what these other devices are. Current rumors have the unannounced Curve Touch CDMA version using a Qualcomm MSM 8655 800Mhz CPU and I have only seen it on the CDMA roadmaps. Its hard to keep a handle on all of the upcoming device rumors since they have changed multiple times but let us know what you think! We can all also collectively thank Marvell for failing to produce a proper 1.2Ghz chip which forced RIM to make changes to their OS (including the PlayBook) to move over to Qualcomm's Snapdragon platform.

Groupon for BlackBerry Updated to v1.2 – No Change Log

groupon2 groupon groupon3

I find myself using the Groupon BlackBerry app every once in awhile and while it is not up to par with the Amazon app it is still pretty good. I am not going to vote one way or the other about daily deals but if you are into the Groupon crazy then you will be happy to learn that they have updated their BlackBerry app. I have no idea what is new in this update but my guess is bug fixes.

ePub Reader for the BlackBerry PlayBook Shows Promise

Posted: 20 Jun 2011 09:05 AM PDT

313573 313575

Since I picked up my BlackBerry PlayBook I have been looking for a solid ebook reader for it. While Kobo reader is nice they do not let you bring your own books which is a huge turn off. While Overdrive does a great job as an ePub (eBook file format) reader for my smartphone I have been looking for a counterpart on my PlayBook.

VOS IT Solutions must have been reading my mind when they released their EPUB Reader for the PlayBook. While the app could use refinement is definitely shows promise and opens up about 9/10 eBooks I have tried. At $1.99 EPUB Reader it is a pretty decent deal but hopefully they will keep on improving the app and we will get quite a few other ePub readers for the PlayBook.

RIM Evolves BlackBerry WebWorks Tools with TinyHippos & Ripple Emulator

Posted: 20 Jun 2011 07:34 AM PDT

Ripple Emulator

As a web developer I have always been interested in the WebWorks platform for BlackBerry. RIM seems to be really seeing the value of the platform and has been investing a great deal of effort into it. They recently purchased TinyHippos along with their Ripple emulator to expand the BlackBerry environment and the results are starting to come out.

According to their latest DevBlog post they are counting on TinyHippos Ripple Emulator to replace parts of the WebWorks development puzzle. They realize that firing up a desktop and simulator sucks for web development and that is where Ripple excels. It lets you edit your code and simply hit refresh in the Ripple emulator to test it out.

They are promising that the Ripple emulator will evolve into a:

  • Downloadable light weight emulator running on your desktop like a standard browser with integration into any tool that can have a browser registered (i.e. Eclipse™ & Visual Studio™)/li>
  • Fidelity rendering and JavaScript® compatibility with the actual BlackBerry WebKit browser/li>
  • Embedded Web Inspector support for debugging
  • Ability to build and sign your app
  • Ability to load your built application on a device simulator or actual device for final testing

In the spirit of this replacement RIM is going to be retiring the WebWorks plugins for Visual Studio and Eclipse that were clunkers in my opinion. They will be available in the dev zone until October 19th after which they will end support for them on Dec 31st 2011. They will also only be compatible with WebWorks v2.0 and earlier.

RIM has kindly created a developers guide for migrating their coding from Visual Studio and Eclipse to TinyHippos Ripple which I highly recommend reading. Let us know what you find!

Adobe Updates Flash Builder to v4.5.1 Improving Mobile Support

Posted: 20 Jun 2011 06:53 AM PDT

One Codebase

While Flash Builder v4.5 was supposed to be the version that added mobile support for developers to go cross platform it only really supported Android at first. From what I am hearing from devs this new Flash Builder v4.5.1 along with Flex 4.5.1 allows you to follow the similar export process to develop apps for the PlayBook along with Android and iOS devices from one codebase. I am waiting to hear back from Adobe on exactly what is different between v4.5 and v4.5.1 but you can check out for yourself.

You can find out more about the update and download it from Adobe. Thanks to Ashley for the tip via Press Release

RIM Returns Free Avatar Builder Apps to App World in v1.0.1

Posted: 20 Jun 2011 04:30 AM PDT

312767 312780

In an odd turn of events RIM pulled the really slick Avatar Builder apps from App World less than 24 hours after they were released. I was hearing it was for a legal issue and it looks like @CrackBerry was hearing the same thing. In case you were wondering this is exactly what I meant about RIM legal always standing in the way of progress at RIM. Even when they do something cool and unexpected RIM legal has to crap on it. You can also probably blame them for why the app is limited to only 25 or so countries.

In case you didn't get them before you can now pick up the different versions below:

PS: Anybody else think it odd that RIM seems to be hinting that no BlackBerry user has a nose?
