US Cellular Getting BlackBerry Torch 9850 & Curve 9350 Soon

We already saw some details on the upcoming lineup hitting US Cellular but now we have some more info. The latest leaked/rumored slides confirm the BlackBerry Torch 9850 and BlackBerry Curve 9350 will be coming to US Cellular. Now we also know that the Torch 9850 will be launching in August and the BlackBerry Curve 9350 is coming in October.

Also thanks to the leaked slides we now have more confirmation that the BlackBerry Torch 9850 will actually be branded a Torch.

Breaking Down the Latest “Anonymous” Former RIM Executives Comments

The fun continues with more anonymous supposedly former RIM executives speaking out about RIM and its Co-CEO's courtesy of the latest tech tabloid BoyGenius Report. It seems to be the same story again with and extra helping of hearsay and negative spin attached. The thing is some of it is totally believable while on the other hand it makes you wonder what the big deal is especially since most of the things that the BGR points out are things RIM has already fixed or is improving in the next 6-8 months. While they may be later to market than we would like they definitely have some serious fight left in them. RIM's CEOs have admitted that they fell behind the curve but they are committed to fixing that. It could be they were a bit pigheaded but their latest QNX work and other signs point to drastically changed times. Harping about the past just seems to be crying over spilt milk. Hearing old executives talk about RIM before they entered this "Transitory period" over to QNX and new hardware doesn't seem to add much to any conversation.

Let me give you a few examples and take a crack at boiling down this latest stupidity:

Harping about how Mike Lazaridis said that BlackBerrys will never have cameras, marketing names, MP3 Players. Cameras: Check, Marketing names: Check, MP3 Players: Check. So what’s the problem? It didn't happen fast enough? Now their cameras rival the competition and they have features like Wireless Media Sync which no other competitor has.

Missing social collaborative scene in media circles. BlackBerry now dominates social media marketing. They were just named one of the top social brands.

Browser took so long to improve because RIM was always focused on low data usage.
This is something RIM has already addressed and addressed well.

RIM focused too much on security, battery life, and network performance.
And that is a problem? They just needed to throw more into the mix which they have started doing with upgraded hardware and features like Flash on the PlayBook and the browser starting with Torch.

RIM charges carriers network fees that carriers are always trying to lower.
So did Apple with taking a cut of monthly fees… Does that stop the iPhone from selling?

PlayBook didn't ship with native email as carriers were expecting.
I agree on this one but once again something that is being addressed. First valid complaint but something you didn't need a RIM executive to tell you. :)

The BlackBerry is not a cool device anymore.
While that might be true in the US just look at how many celebrities use them. RIM is also trying to up the cool factor with the sexy new 9900. Still I agree but RIM has admitted to working on fixing this.

Mike has bodyguards.
Why do we care? He didn't have bodyguards last time I saw him in downtown Manhattan. Just look how much Amazons CEO pays for private security.

Jim wanted to buy an NHL team.
Why do we care?

Mike was really pissed when devices leak before launch.
Seriously? Did you see what Apple did when the iPhone prototype leaked?

Do you guys want me to go on? You have to love these insightful "anonymous former executives."

S4BB Photo Booth Adds BlackBerry Messenger 6 Social Platform Support

S4BB released Photo Booth a bit ago and I was impressed with the app. It lets you easily take 4 pictures in a row sort of like photo booths at amusement parks. They just updated their app to include a awesome new features that integrates with BlackBerry Messenger 6 and its new Social Platform SDK and API. The app now lets you send the pictures after you are done to a friend on BBM. You just need to make sure they also have the app installed from what I can tell and have BBM 6 installed.

BlackBerry Torch 2 9810 OS 7.1 Showing Up in App Logs?

Now here is an odd one. The developer of the opensource BlackBerry email client LogicMail, Derek Konigsberg, spotted an interesting device in his application stats. He saw somebody using one of the unannounced BlackBerry Torch 2 9810 but this model was running OS 7.1.0.4. With OS 7.0 not out the door yet this makes me wonder what device this is. The IP address seems to be coming from Russia but could it be that there is an OS 7.1 coming too?

Just to give you an idea of what the user agent should look like for the 9900:

Mozilla/5.0 (BlackBerry; U; BlackBerry 9900; en-US) AppleWebKit/534.11+ (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/7.0.0 Mobile Safari/534.11+

Notice the 7.0.0 instead of the 7.1.0.4 found in the logs. Let us know what your conspiracy theory is!

RIM Updates BlackBerry Bold 9900 & 9930 Simulators to OS 7.0.0.218

9900 Simulators updated

With the BlackBerry Bold 9900 and 9930 right around the corner RIM is keeping devs up to date with the release. Their latest update has been to bring the BlackBerry Bold 9900 and 9930 simulators to v7.0.0.218. The regular site is listing this version for the 9900 but N4BB spotted this link to the 9930 version too.

RIM Co-CEOs Have 6 Months To Prove Why They Need Chairman Role

According to BusinessWeek RIM's Co-CEOs have 6 months to prove they need to hold both the Co-CEO and chairman positions. This came to a head a bit before the annual shareholder meeting where NEI brought the vote to the table but then withdrew it with a week to go to the vote. The interesting thing is it seems like RIM's CEO's are getting just the amount of time they need to turn things around. All 7 of their new generation smartphones are coming out by the end of the year and early 2012 will show off QNX phones and a much stronger PlayBook.

App World Blows Past 1 Billion Downloads – Developer Success Stories

App World of Possibilities

App World just hit a big milestone this week blowing past 1 billion downloads and updates of apps in App World. They are seeing an average of 3 million downloads per day now from over 100 countries. In their announcement they confirm yet again that the BlackBerry App World 3.0 beta is coming very soon and the beta will start later this month.

They also announced some great numbers from developers on App World. Here is a quick summary:

  • Bellshare saw their BeBuz app (paid and free version) hit 10 million downloads and $1 million in sales through BlackBerry App World. Pretty big numbers.
  • Doodle Blast on the PlayBook has surpassed 40,000 downloads in 3 months in App World.
  • Jingu apps with BlackBerry Messenger connections has passed 700,000 downloads and is getting closer to 1 million every day.
