PlayBook OS 1.0.7.2650 Adds Flight Mode & Other Tweaks

Posted: 18 Jul 2011 09:32 PM PDT

IMG_00000003 IMG_00000002

Our tipster is still going through the latest PlayBook OS to see what they notice. I also just heard from another friend that got the OS update so they are also checking. There are some small updates like Adobe AIR going from 2.7.0.195 to 2.7.0.297 and Adobe Flash updated from 10.3.212.18 to 10.3.212.38 but those are relatively minor.

RIM has added a new "Flight Mode" option that turns off all the radios on the PlayBook. They have also added a region selector to the language menu option. Let us know if you notice anything yourself if you get the update. Its odd usually RIM does these updates on a larger scale…

RIM Rolling Out BlackBerry Bridge 1.0.4.9

Posted: 18 Jul 2011 06:34 PM PDT

BlackBerry Bridge Update

We knew it was coming soon but it looks like we will be having a PlayBook OS update soon. Both N4BB and @rr_yy noticed that RIM has started rolling out BlackBerry Bridge v1.0.4.9 as an update to 1.0.0.93. Its oddly both a small and big version update. :)

So mash those update and RSET buttons or head on over to App World and sideload it. Anybody want to take bets on when OS 1.0.7 launches? Something tells me RIM is going to do it just when I put my head down on my pillow.

@rr_yy let us know you can pick up the OTA directly from his site at www.rroyy.com/ota

If you did not get enough soccer from the great game USA played at the finale Women’s World Cup against Japan there is also the Copa America or the American Cup. RIM Confirms Wi-Fi PlayBook Rumors Are False – Not Discontinued

Posted: 18 Jul 2011 02:29 PM PDT

PlayBook discontinued false

Well we had our own issues with the circular logic of the rumor but now we have RIM confirming the rumor is false. JD let us know that RIM responded on Twitter to the BGR confirming that the BlackBerry PlayBook Wi-Fi model is not discontinued and their rumor was "Pure Fiction." You can see their exact response above.

This makes me wonder if we will actually get a rumor saying that RIM’s co-CEO’s are aliens… Maybe even another anonymous letter from a former employee to confirm their extra terrestrial origins. :)

RIM Stopping Wi-Fi Playbook Production Rumor – Anybody Else Confused?

Posted: 18 Jul 2011 02:06 PM PDT

Circle of BlackBerry bridgePair

I am running into a bit of circular logic with the latest rumor about the Wi-Fi BlackBerry PlayBook. The Financial Post which supposedly broke the story starts by saying that RIM shares fell about 3.5% today. They then go on to quote RBC Capital Markets financial analyst Mike Abramsky saying that the "stock slide was due to media reports claiming RIM is considering stopping production of the WiFi-only PlayBook."

The thing is the only media reports that claim RIM is stopping production of the Wi-Fi only BlackBerry PlayBook (BoyGenius Report) credit Mike Abramsky, the same analyst mentioned above who covers RIM regularly, for saying that RIM is considering possibly maybe reducing BlackBerry PlayBook Wi-Fi only production. They then go on to quote Mike Abramsky for possible reasons why the rumor, which according to all accounts he started, is possibly true because:

In our view WiFi PlayBook build reductions may: 1) reflect a pullback in production following global channel fill to 16 countries; 2) align channel inventory with slower than expected forecast sell-through; 3) accommodate a shift in production to the 3G/4G PlayBook (launches expected in 2-3 months); and 4) reflect expectations that 3G/4G PlayBook may outsell/cannibalize WiFi-only models (considering carrier alignment and customer/enterprise feedback). RIM also appears to be re-prioritizing its R&D from PlayBook to its QNX-based 'superphones' expected early 2012, considering its importance to stemming US share losses.

So now I am still confused as to if RIM is stopping production or simply building less of them now that they have fully stocked their sales channels. The Financial Post then makes a fantastical jump to RIM planning on ceasing production of the Wi-Fi only model. At least I follow Mikes reasoning that RIM may be focusing on their 3G/4G PlayBook along with their 7 new phones and upcoming QNX superphones. On the other hand who knows what is actually going on but RIM is pushing the PlayBook hard. It could be they simply are moving everything over to 4G models in the future but that seems to be a monumental waste.

Anybody else seeing something a bit off about this rumor?

Shape Hears From RIM on PlayBook IM+ – Approval Coming Within 2 Weeks

Posted: 18 Jul 2011 01:39 PM PDT

IMPlus under review

We told you about IM+ for the BlackBerry PlayBook and RIM’s drawn out approval process. IM+ for the BlackBerry PlayBook has not been in the App World Review queue for over 2 months prompting Shape to speak out. Due to all the buzz created by them speaking out they finally heard from RIM’s Tyler Lessard, VP of Global Alliances and Developer Relations. He said that IM+ did not have a EULA (End User License Agreement) and admitted this should have been told to Shape much earlier. He said he will try to speed up the approval process for the next update with the EULA.

Here is the update Shape posted on Google+ (Thanks TD!)

Our management just had a call with Tyler Lessard, VP, Global Alliances and Developer Relations. Tyler pointed that app doesn’t have a EULA; this of course should have been noticed and reported earlier by AppWorld’s review team. Anyway Tyler confirmed he will try to speed up the approval process when we submit an update. We will surely do this ASAP.

Bla1ze over at CrackBerry pointed out more details about the situation posted on Shapes blog:

OK, as I wrote in my previous post, RIM is an organization where a lot of nice people are working.
Shape’s Development Head Alex and myself just had a talk with Tyler Lessard, RIM’s VP, Global Alliances and Developer Relations.
Tyler was really friendly and helpful and we have now a hope that IM+ for Playbook will be approved within two weeks or so. We understand that to approve such an complex app can take the same time or more as the development of IM+ for Playbook itself. Just as remember, the app is now for two months in the testing queue.
And the best of the talk: after years of our requests to RIM we got from Tyler a promise to consider BlackBerry Push usage for IM+. It would make user experience on the BlackBerry platform the same kind of beautiful like on iOS.
Please continue to follow-up the story, it will really help to make things done. And to celebrate the moment we will offer to our friends from crackberry.com 25 free licenses of IM+ Pro for BlackBerry right now and 25 free licenses of IM+ for Playbook after release.

It is really cool of Shape and CrackBerry to be giving away licenses but I really wish it would not take up to two weeks for this app to be available for the BlackBerry PlayBook. A EULA seems like such a petty reason to hold back an app especially after 2 months. Still at least now we know we are getting a native IM app for the PlayBook!

TicketMaster v2.0 Beta Available in BlackBerry Beta Zone

Posted: 18 Jul 2011 11:12 AM PDT

ticketmaster-2 ticketmaster-1

It has been a long time since RIM updated their TicketMaster app. They just announced that version 2.0 of the TicketMaster app is now available in the Beta Zone and includes some nice new features. They also gave the app a graphics overhaul which makes it quite a bit more visually appealing compared to the previous mobile website style design. The new v2.0 beta of TicketMaster:

  • Allows users to purchase tickets from their BlackBerry smartphone
  • Add events to calendar
  • Set favorite artists and events
  • Leverages geo functions to connect users to events in their area Quick Links

The redesign in my opinion is the biggest new bump along with an updated search feature and faster purchasing process. You can pick it up at www.blackBerry.com/beta or read more about it on the BlackBerry Insider Blog. The app is only available for those of you in North America with OS 4.5+

Amazon Sellers Offering Deals on the BlackBerry PlayBook

Posted: 18 Jul 2011 10:13 AM PDT

PlayBook AMazon Sale

Now that RIM is starting to reach into retail channels with the BlackBerry PlayBook it was inevitable that price reductions would come with them. I love Amazon for always driving prices lower and together with their sellers they seem to be working. Brian pointed out that Amazon now has sellers with significantly lower prices than retail selling the BlackBerry PlayBook for:

BlackBerry PlayBook 16 GB: $444 with free shipping
BlackBerry PlayBook 32 GB: $539.69 with free shipping
BlackBerry PlayBook 64 GB: $648 with free shipping

While that lowest priced seller only has an 80% review rating there are others with nearly the same prices and much higher seller ratings. If you were looking for a good value on a BlackBerry PlayBook check out Amazon. Let us know if you spot any better deals!

Five Myths About AT&T-Mobile Merger by Consumer Advocate Free Press

Posted: 18 Jul 2011 08:54 AM PDT

zombie handshake

I am not a big fan of the AT&T T-Mobile merger but it seems to be almost inevitable. It will be a sad day when both AT&T and T-Mobile have a virtual strangle hold on the wireless market. They seem to be trying to argue that this will be good for customers but lack of competition is never good for customers. Tashanna pointed out some great points on why this is the case posted by TmoNews from the Consumer Advocate Free Press. I only have an image of the points but they are well worth reading. Let me know if you find a better copy!

Verizon Confirms LTE Cross Carrier Roaming is a Nonstarter

Posted: 18 Jul 2011 07:00 AM PDT

verizon 4g LTE

Just when you thought that the news about mobile data could not get any worse… First we had AT&T lowering data caps to 2GB but at least had the decency to lower the price by $5. Then Verizon did the same lowering but kept the price the same. This all seems to be prompted by faster data networks including the rollout of LTE by Verizon and then by AT&T all in the name of better serving customers. The thing is AT&T has always been the main GSM carrier with sim cards along with T-Mobile allowing easy switching of unlocked phones between the two and other networks. Verizon and Sprint with CDMA did nothing of the sort.

Many were hoping that since Verizon was finally moving to SIM cards with LTE there would be a little more interoperability between them and other carriers. No such luck. Verizon confirmed to PCMag that even though both AT&T and Verizon run LTE in the 700Mhz spectrum they only overlap a little bit. They are also much farther from the 1700Mhz and 1500Mhz of MetroPCS and LightSquared so no luck there either. The thing is we will probably see tri or quad band LTE phones in the future but you can see that carriers are not all that interested about interoperability…

RIM Starts Making BlackBerrys in Malaysia

Posted: 18 Jul 2011 06:39 AM PDT

RIM Malaysia Plant

RIM has slowly expanded their manufacturing throughout the globe with plants in Mexico, Brazil, and other countries. Terrence noticed that RIM has started a new plant up in Malaysia. We heard rumors of such a plant before but this time we have pictures and everything. I wonder what model BlackBerrys they will be making there. I know that quality has been different from different plants over the years and it will be interesting to see how Malaysia makes a name for themselves.

RIM Apologizes for Code Signing Server Outage

Posted: 18 Jul 2011 05:49 AM PDT

Is the signing server down

It took RIM 5 days but they finally got on top of the Code Signing server outages at the end of last week. Tyler Lessard, head of RIM's developer relations team, also publically apologized for the outages and confirmed that RIM take issues like this seriously. Hopefully in the future they will take them seriously enough to offer developers an ongoing status of the situation instead of them having to scour the forums.

Alternatively I was really hoping to hear RIM finally just admit that code signing in its current form is simply a pain for developers and adds little to no value. I have been trying to drive that message home to RIM but they seem to just love themselves some code signing even with their next gen PlayBook OS.

Here is the full letter from RIM:

Hello BlackBerry developer community, it's Tyler Lessard here. I head up the Developer Relations team here at Research In Motion® (RIM®). As some of you are aware, we recently had some issues with the stability of our code signing servers. Earlier this week, BlackBerry® developers were not able to sign their applications during periods of downtime of the code signing service. The issues that we experienced have now been resolved and I'd like to apologize to the community for this situation. We realize this can be a disruption to your business and we take issues like this very seriously.

As soon as the issue was identified, it was escalated for root cause analysis and resolution. Through that investigation, we identified a diagnostic activity that was acting abnormally during the signing process. Upon resolving the issue with this diagnostic process, operations were restored to a level of service that we would expect.

The signing servers are now operating normally and developers can continue with code signing. We are continuing to monitor the service closely and are actively evaluating new solutions that we can implement to improve the reliability of the service overall. As always, thank you for your support and for bearing with us through this exercise.

- Tyler Lessard, VP Developer Relations and Alliances
