ISIS Teams Up with Visa, MasterCard, Discover, & AmEx for Mobile Payments

The mobile payment ecosystem is really making some noise this year in conjunction with NFC. We told you about ISIS a bit back but now they have announced that they are working with Visa, MasterCard, Discover, and American Express to expand mobile payments with NFC. When ISIS originally started as a joint venture it was mostly the carriers AT&T, T-Mobile, & Verizon along with Discover but now they seem to have gotten everybody on board.

The ISIS technology is set to start rolling out in the first half of next year with NFC cards tied into any of the major 4 payment network cards you already have. Think of your phone as a Visa, MasterCard, Discover, or American Express card replacement. This sort of leaves Google Payments out in the cold along with Sprint but if this takes off it will be nice to see some standardization among the competition.

Isis Becomes the First and Only Mobile Commerce Platform with Full Support of All Four National Payment Networks

Aspen, Colorado — July 19, 2011: Isis, the national mobile commerce joint venture between AT&T Mobility, T-Mobile USA and Verizon Wireless, today announced that Visa, MasterCard, Discover and American Express will join Isis in making mobile commerce a reality for millions of U.S. consumers and merchants. Isis' relationships with all four payment networks mean that with Isis-enabled phones and payment terminals in place, merchants and consumers will have ubiquity and freedom of choice when it comes to payment network acceptance.

"Since the formation of Isis in November, we have been committed to building a mobile commerce platform that aligns and advances the interests of consumers, merchants and banks," said Michael Abbott, chief executive officer for Isis. "By working with the nation's payment networks – Visa, MasterCard, Discover and American Express – we significantly advance the vision of an open and secure platform that provides banks and merchants with a new and highly relevant way to connect with consumers."

Today's announcement underscores Isis' inclusive approach, providing all critical stakeholders – banks, merchants and consumers – with the freedom and choice necessary to foster a robust new industry and make mobile commerce a reality.

"Visa has long championed an open approach to mobile commerce that allows consumers to choose which account they want to enable for mobile payments," said Joe Saunders, chief executive officer, Visa Inc. "We are committed to working closely with Isis, handset manufacturers, platform providers and financial institutions to offer consumers a suite of mobile services – mobile payments, coupons tailored to location and lifestyle, real time account information and more."

Earlier this year, Isis announced Salt Lake City, Utah and Austin, Texas as initial launch markets, slated to roll out in the first half of 2012 with support from all four payment networks.

"We fully support an open commerce ecosystem which will drive the scale necessary for widespread adoption of mobile payments, providing consumers with exciting new possibilities for shopping and saving," said Ajay Banga, president and chief executive officer, MasterCard Worldwide. "Our work with Isis reinforces MasterCard's commitment to the continued development, innovation and evolution of mobile payments technologies."

Isis will bring mobile commerce to consumers and merchants by using mobile phones to make point-of-sale purchases through the use of near-field communication (NFC) technology. Isis will offer customers a secure and convenient way to pay, redeem coupons and store merchant loyalty cards, all with the tap of a phone.

"Discover has been working with Isis from the start to facilitate mobile commerce, which will provide added convenience and benefits to consumers while delivering increased loyalty and sales to merchants," said David W. Nelms, chairman and chief executive officer for Discover. "Isis' open strategy is the right approach to establishing a highly secure environment for mobile commerce that will be achieved through the participation of banks and payment networks like Discover."

Since its formation, Isis has had a strong vested interest in generating industry involvement and support for a mobile commerce platform that is open and inclusive by design. By working with all four payment networks, Isis will set the standard for what it means to be open, secure and reliable in the mobile commerce industry.

Today's announcement was made at the annual Fortune Brainstorm TECH conference in Aspen, Colorado.

RIM Confirms PlayBook OS Update Issue – Fix Coming This Week

PlayBook OS Update Issues Confirmed

RIM has confirmed that there are issues with the latest PlayBook OS update v1.0.7 they rolled out. They have also confirmed on Twitter that they are going to release a new update this week to fix the bridge issues users are experiencing. I have no idea how these bugs managed to make it through testing but you would think RIM would see the benefit of doing public beta testing… I know quite a few people who would be glad to test out early builds for RIM.

OTA Links for Foursquare Alpha with BBM Integration

When Foursquare issued their update today to v3.0 they removed the BBM integration from the app along with removing it from the Alpha build. Some people have upgraded but didn’t realize they were losing the BBM integration but thankfully there is a way to get back to square one. RR_yy posted some OTA links for both OS 5.0 and OS 6.0 giving you back the previous alpha with BBM support. Others that had issues with downloading the previous alpha may also have better luck with this update.

BlackBerry Messenger 6.0 Coming on July 27th as Part of OS 7?

We know that BlackBerry Messenger 6.0 is coming soon but right now it is simply sitting in the Beta Zone. N4BB heard word from one of their sources that received an email from RIM about BBM 6. The email said:


Please be advised that BlackBerry® Messenger 6.0 for BlackBerry smartphones is scheduled to release as part of BlackBerry® 7 OS and will be available in BlackBerry App World™ storefront on July 27, 2011."

The new features and enhancements for BBM 6.0 include the following items:

BBM connected apps: Users can connect supported apps to BBM and benefit from additional social features, including additional chat options, the ability to share app activity, and more.
Adding contacts: The Invite screen has been improved so that users can quickly type contact information in the field at the top of the screen.
BBM™ Groups: Users can share links to GPS locations, podcasts, and webpages with a group.
Chats: Users can send and receive appointments

Who knows if this means BBM 6 will launch by itself to prepare for OS 7 or it will be actually launching on July 27th alongside a BBM 7 device. Should be interesting to see how this plays out.

To commemorate the occasion (and rack up their throw numbers) they are offering up PaperPlane as a free download in App World until this Sunday. Foursquare v3.0 for BlackBerry Comes Out of Beta

We told you about the alpha of Foursquare v3.0 for BlackBerry a bit earlier but that included BBM integration. This public release of Foursquare v3.0 has that feature removed because they wanted to put the finishing touches on it while getting this release out the door ASAP. The new version simply just looks nicer along with a bunch of other updates including:

  • An overhauled UI, from the check-in screen down to your friends list.
  • Explore! Get personalized recommendations on places to go, from your past check-ins, your friends', and the whole foursquare community. Search for what you want (like a lobster roll) or just tap an activity (like 'drinks' or 'food'). And, for those of you who like deals, tap the 'Specials' button to find Specials nearby that are perfect for you.
  • Speaking of Specials, this update allows you to grab daily deals around you from our five partners – LivingSocial, Gilt City, BuyWithMe, YP.com, and zozi. Seamless savings without leaving foursquare.

Iconify Adds Custom Hotkey Support and More!

Wow it has been awhile since we last mentioned Iconify from EmacBerry. They let us know that the app just got some more love with a slew of new features to improve the custom homescreen shortcuts app. They have added the ability to add a homescreen shortcut for apps the be in multiple places along with adding apps to the global menu so they are always there.

My favorite new feature is the ability to set homescreen hotkey shortcuts up to the amount of available homescreen keys since some of them are already taken by the OS. It lets you create your own shortcuts to your hearts content. If you already own a copy of Iconify you can update OTA here. Otherwise you can pick up the 15 link ($0.99 on sale) version or 50 link ($1.99 on sale) version in the store.

Here is the change log of the rest of this new v1.6.1.4 update:

  • Create an Iconify ApplicationLink to any existing installed application on your BlackBerry® Device.
    • Specify a custom image for the Application or use the default Application Icon.

      Please note, that most of the Core BlackBerry Applications (like Mail, Contacts, Calendar, Clock, etc.) does not come with own Application Icons – most of these "Core"-Apps gets their Icon from the current active Theme. Unfortunately there is no access (for a 3′rd party application) to these Theme icons – so you need to specify a own image.

    • Specify an custom name or use the default generated (depending on your settings the default application name.

    Creating ApplicationLinks can be done via the Iconify-Options in the Edit IconifyLinks section. There you will find a Menu Item called ‘Add IconifyApplicationLink’ which will open a Application-Chooser. Please note that you can filter the list and hide the System (Core) Applications. This makes it much easier to find your individual installed 3′rd Party Applications.

    Please Note, that not all listed System Apps can be actual launched – some of them require additional parameters & configurations that are only known by RIM.

  • For all Iconify Links you have the option to include the link in the global BlackBerry Menu – this will make the Link available always (in any application) via the BlackBerry Menu.
  • Additionally to be able to include each Link in the Menu you have to option to specify a HomeScreen Hotkey for your link – so you can launch the link directly from the HomeScreen by a single click on your BlacBerry keyboard (not available for Storm & Strom2 – sorry).

    Please note that this functionality have some restrictions:

    • For OS6 you have to activate the ‘Application Shortcuts’ (this can be done in the Home Screen Preferences – Launch by Typing)
    • For other OS (except Storm/Storm2) you have to disable the the ‘Dial from Home Screen’ Option in the Phone Options
    • Some of the chars are already in use by the core BlackBerry applications (like ‘O’ (for Options) or ‘M’ (for Messages)) – so the number of available HomeScreen hotkeys is limited and you can’t assign a hotkey for all of your Iconify links’.
  • Support for new BlackBerry Devices 9900 & 9850
  • Contact Pager-Number can be used

BlackBerry PlayBook Tablet OS v1.0.7.2650 Change Log

Mine was at 358 MB but I hear for some is 350 not sure what the difference in size is but we do have the full change log for you thanks to Michael over at the official BlackBerry Blog.

New Features and Changes:

Improved connectivity & productivity with the BlackBerry Bridge application

     

  • Enhanced Support for Saving Attachments – The BlackBerry® Bridge™ app offers you more flexibility around where and how you save attachments for viewing and editing. You can now save an attachment to a removable SD card, or to your BlackBerry smartphone's internal flash memory.
  • ZIP Attachment Support – The BlackBerry Bridge app now gives you access to ZIP files received as an email attachment. While bridged, you can now download a zip file from an email to your smartphone SD card and then extract compressed contents for viewing or editing on your BlackBerry PlayBook tablet.

Additional Multimedia Features

How to update to BlackBerry Tablet OS v1.0.7

Users who purchase and activate a BlackBerry PlayBook tablet on or after Wednesday, July 13th, 2011 will be automatically updated to v1.0.7 as part of the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet setup process. Existing BlackBerry PlayBook tablet users will be presented with a software update notification on the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet status ribbon, or they can check for the software update at any time in the Settings Menu under Software Updates.

Remember to also update the BlackBerry Bridge application on your BlackBerry smartphone.
