| BlackBerry Podcasts App v1.5.0.45 Rolling Out? Posted: 11 Aug 2011 02:07 PM PDT
The free BlackBerry Podcasts app was updated to v1.5.0.28 back in April but hasn’t seen much action since. According to RIM's official forums that is going to change soon with them announcing v1.5.0.45 now available. That seems like a small bump but according to their forums it adds quite a few new features including push delivery of new episodes. Features of the new version include

| Enlarge Your Pants Game for the BlackBerry PlayBook… by Not-so-Stupid Posted: 11 Aug 2011 01:00 PM PDT I am at a loss for words. When John sent me a link to this game I couldn't stop laughing. As the developer, not-so-stupid, explains the objective of the game is to keep the bear bouncing by pulling his underpants (aka trousers aka underwear) faster. Based on where you strategically place your finger on the bears underpants the faster your bear will bounce. There are even SUPER and HELPER bears to help you pull his underpants… The game developer even promises bears with special underpants abilities. | Foursquare Talks About Success of BlackBerry App & BBM Integration Posted: 11 Aug 2011 10:54 AM PDT Pete Nofelt from Foursquare made an appearance at the BBM Hackathon with some interesting data to share. BlackBerry is a huge part of Foursquare's success and Pete was backing it up with numbers. Their implementation of the BBM Social Platform has been a HUGE hit and really skyrocketed their user engagement along with bringing a record number of users. Here is some of the data Pete shared:
Pete had a couple of tips for developers. Mainly don't be spammy and respect a users trust they gave you when installing the app. He said that BBM helped users share data outside Foursquare and lets you share data outside your graph. He also said that developers should change the package name to avoid conflicts if you use RIM's plugin. He mentioned that the RIM provided code degrades gracefully so it wont throw exceptions if a user is using a non BBM6 supported OS or does not have BBM6 and installs your BBM powered app. Last but not least he recommended throwing in extras like a nice bright color scheme and start up screen which users appreciate from Foursquare. | Why Social & BBM SDK is So Important to RIM – Wordmole Getting BBM Treatment Posted: 11 Aug 2011 09:46 AM PDT
At the Hackathon Tyler Lessard and the head of the BBM SDK initiative (didn't catch his name) talked about why BBM is so important and why this BBM Social Platform is exciting for RIM. Tyler bases his reasoning on Ray Kurzweil and his "Law of Accelerating Returns" which boils down to proving exponential instead of linear growth in technology. He talks about how companies are now building on today's technology. That means they are building their apps assuming things that never existed just a few years ago. For example, the big push into the cloud means operating systems are now assuming that the cloud exists and building on top of it. Its the same thing for Social, NFC, connected Gaming, etc. RIM found that apps that were socially connected were 8 times more sticky than their non connected versions and bring higher levels of engagement. All in all that means they are opening a huge new social graph to developers that is only available for BlackBerry developers. That is why I am really looking forward to RIM's first BBM Hackathon. RIM let us know that they plan on doing many more Hackathons with possible other locations in North America and around the world. They have done some in Asia and Europe in the past but those were mostly a sponsorship of another companies Hackathon. They are counting on these 30 Hackathon contestants to tell them what they are doing right or wrong and provide feedback directly to the managers and developers involved in the BBM SDK and the BlackBerry dev platform in general. Anybody noticing a paradigm shift in how RIM is reaching out to developers? On a side note the slides RIM was using to show off the BBM SDK and its features all showed off screenshots of Wordmole with the BBM SDK features built in. That includes chat and a few other features. I did not have a chance to check the BlackBerry 7 devices to see if they have this new version. Check the screenshots below to see what I mean:

Every so often RIM shares with us how BlackBerry Messenger is doing. At the BBM Hackathon at NYC Tyler Lessard, VP of BlackBerry Alliances & Developer Relations, share the latest numbers. They are pretty impressive and I think it is the first time RIM has shared how many BBM groups there are.

| Last Week’s BlackBerry 7 Event In Toronto aka #BB7FanNight Posted: 11 Aug 2011 07:04 AM PDT
I, like Kyle, was at last week’s BlackBerry 7 Sneak Peek event at The Fifth Social Club on Richmond St W. in Toronto at the invitation of those generous folks over at Research In Motion. The event was dubbed #BB7FanNight for those following along on the Twitter stream.
I went to the event with a couple of friends and saw a whole ton of familiar faces in the lineup from the Toronto community, both BlackBerry addicts and users of other phones alike. Once we all got up the stairs we entered a world where everyone was to be very impressed. The whole club space had been turned into a BlackBerry love fest for these awesome new devices that were freshly announced and are now being released and the mood was electric. It helped, of course, that RIM had sprung for an open bar but you could see they had thought of so many things down to the last detail including ensuring the bar staff were suitably attired – in BlackBerry 7 gear of course!
With an open bar you’d think it would be easy to get at the actual devices and play with them because most people would be busy boozing but not with this crowd. From the moment I got in there until the moment they closed the event up it was easier to get a drink than it was to get a look at one of these hot new devices. Each of the stations which had a number of the new BlackBerry devices available to be fondled was mobbed pretty much throughout the entire event.
It was even easier to get a picture with Toronto Blue Jays baseball great Joe Carter than it was to push to the front of the stations and play with each BlackBerry. I also had no idea that Joe Carter himself was such a BlackBerry addict.
At first I wasn’t sure if his loyalty had more to do with RIM offering him compensation to be a spokesperson for them but three things to me proved his legitimate place on Team BlackBerry:
Unfortunately, I totally forgot to get Joe’s PIN to add him on BBM – maybe next time.
There was also a line just to get at the BlackBerry 7 photobooth which had all sorts of little BlackBerry and “7″ paraphernalia but my friend Shannon and I finally got up there to show our BlackBerry devotion and excitement for BlackBerry 7. Of course, we got a chance to check out the devices before we left. I was so very impressed with the usability and speed of these new phones I knew I needed to get one sooner rather than later. One of the gentleman who was showing off the 9850/9860 had his Sprint activated 9850 on hand and even let me play with it as opposed to one of the display models so I was able to snap this picture of me holding the device in my hand.
But for my tastes – and my friend Shannon was completely with me on this – we needed a device that had our beloved BlackBerry keyboard. We took a look at the Torch 9810 and in my opinion the placement of the USB port in the same place as its older brother (the 9800) made me really hesitant to want it. I love my 9800 but always find it a problem to be charging my phone while I try to type – ya, I am that much of an addict. I have spoken with the folks from Research In Motion about this and they told that they had heard this from others before and that unfortunately there was literally nowhere else to put the devices’ charging port based on the arrangement of circuit boards and other things which make up the guts of the phone. Therefore, in my mind, my desires are directed towards the beautifully svelte BlackBerry Bold 9900.
It has a touch screen, it has the famed and awesome Bold keyboard, and it runs BlackBerry 7 as smooth as silk. From the moment I played with it and felt how light and sexy it was I knew it was going to most probably be the BlackBerry to replace my beloved Torch 9800. When we left the event, the 40 people who won tickets on Twitter (there may have been other ways to win tickets to the party but that was the only way that I am aware of) told the RIM representative which device they were interested in receiving and which provider they are with and it is going to be mailed to them after the devices are released. However, RIM clearly didn’t want the invited guests – both the ones invited by RIM and by the winners of the contest – to leave empty handed. Oh no, they hooked each and every one of us up – contest winners included – with a sweet swag bag which included a pair of Skullcandy Roc Nation Aviator headphones and a BlackBerry 7 t-shirt just like the ones the bar staff and the RIM representatives were wearing (picture below shows the back of the t-shirt, the front can be seen in the picture at the top of the bar staff). I know I’ll be proud to be wearing my t-shirt around town – and especially to any future BlackBerry events.

Gist is really on a roll with updates recently. Their acquisition by RIM slowed them down for a bit but now they are pumping out updates. We told you earlier that BerryReview was sending three contestants to RIM's BBM Hackathon event in NYC this week. They arrived yesterday and now we finally have a picture of all of us together. All of the BBM Hackathon contestants received a prerelease BlackBerry Bold 9900 and BlackBerry Torch 9810 which is really nice. From left to right the picture shows:
