RIM Interviews the Qantas Wallabies With their PlayBooks & Torch 9810s

Posted: 09 Sep 2011 02:45 AM PDT

Quatas Wallabies

I have to admit I had no idea who the Qantas Wallabies were when JD sent this to me. I did a bit of digging and then realized I should probably mention it for our mates down under. RIM posted up three episodes of them interviewing players of the Qantas Wallabies about their crazy game day rituals (many of them involving lucky underwear?) and some of their craziest injuries. They also talk about how they have been using their BlackBerry Torch 9810s and PlayBooks. I was really hoping RIM would do something like that stateside with a device called the "PlayBook" but they have not played on that yet.

Check out the three videos below:

Slam Dunk Basketball for the PlayBook – Another Slick Marmalade SDK Game!

Posted: 08 Sep 2011 09:57 AM PDT

 Slam Dunk Basketball Alley

Kristofer of VisualDreams let us know that they have brought their flagship game, Slam Dunk Basketball, to the BlackBerry PlayBook. They are planning on bringing all of their games to the PlayBook with this being the start. Slam Dunk Basketball has been a huge hit for them on iOS with over 1 million players so it should be interesting to see how it does on the PlayBook. The graphics look slick and the gameplay is totally fun. These Marmalade SDK powered games are really just a sneak peak of the gaming potential for QNX and the PlayBook especially with native games.

The goal of Slam Dunk Basketball is to score as many shots as you can in 90 seconds and you get more points for scoring. It kind of reminds me of the old school basketball games in arcades. Check out the original trailer for the game below:

Features include:

Free Mobli Location Photo Sharing & Filters App for BlackBerry

Posted: 08 Sep 2011 09:22 AM PDT

Mobli released an app for BlackBerry today that attempts to fill the gap left by Instagram not releasing a BlackBerry app. It sort of mixes the ideas of Instagram and Color by letting you share pictures based on your location, subject, or person you are photographing. You also get access to location based filters which is sort of unique allowing you to filter pictures based on your location, event, date, or category. You can then share your creation on Facebook and Twitter.

I just started trying out the app so I cannot speak for it but check out the free Mobli app in App World and let us know what you think!

Quick PlayBook App Reviews: OmnomBot and Name This Song

Posted: 08 Sep 2011 08:45 AM PDT

OmnomBot

I never did like vegetables as a kid nor do I like them any better as an adult. So I was more than happy the see the folks at Milkman Games agree with me and have developed a game based on this concept. OmnomBot is a game that features a robot that hates eating vegetables and LOVES to eat MEAT. The game has excellent graphics and is very responsive with pretty good game play music. You simply open the robot’s mouth when the meat comes and close his mouth when the vegetables comes. Eating the vegetables will end the game as the robot will spit out everything it just ate. You can download OmnomBot in App World for $1.99.

Name This Song for BlackBerry PlayBook

Name This Song is a simple game that allows you to test your musical knowledge. You simply pick a particular musical genres that you like, say hip-hop. Five songs are then played and you are given four possible choices to select the correct song playing. You are given 15 seconds to choose the correct song while playing against other players that are playing at the same time. I’m not sure exactly how the point system works, but each player is awarded points for correct answers and deducted points for incorrect answers. The app runs pretty smooth but it does have some delay at times.

I hope the app adds two player game play to quickly play with friends and reduce the current delay experienced at times.  You can download Name This Song for BlackBerry PlayBook  free from App World and post your comments regarding both apps.

Polar Mobile & The Hockey News Creating Apps for Every NHL Team

Posted: 08 Sep 2011 07:01 AM PDT

We knew that Polar Mobile and The Hockey News have a great partnership going since 2008 but its about to get better. Together they are working on launching mobile apps for every NHL team cross platform including BlackBerry and hopefully soon the PlayBook. They let us know that their mobile apps have served 160,000,000 page views to over 1,000,000 people in 65 countries.

The new team specific apps are going to go live next month at the start of the 2011-2012 NHL season. It will give you tailored news to your team. No word on if the new apps will be free but I am guessing so since the overarching The Hockey News app is free in App World.

Shure SE115 Sound Isolating Earphones (Black) $39.99 Today Only

Posted: 08 Sep 2011 06:49 AM PDT

Shure Earphones

We don't usually cover headphone deals but long time readers may know that I am a HUGE fan of Shure earphones. I have been using them for years and nothing comes close to their quality and sound isolation. I currently have a pair of the previous gen Shure SE210s and second pair of older E3's but the lowest cost entry for Shure earphones has usually been $70+ even for older generations.

Musicians friend has a great sale going on today only in their "Stupid Deals" section where the entry level Black Shure SE115 earphones are $39.99 today only until their stock runs out since the model has been discontinued. That is an amazing deal since these usually sell for ~$99. (Check out the reviews on Amazon) This model does not have the detachable cables like the higher end options but it does have the modular cable design where there is an extender right after the left and right ear cables come together.

Check out the deal for the Shure SE115s on Musicians Friend and let me know if you pick a pair up!

PS: If you are a thumping bass lover these might not be the headphones for you. If you seal them properly in your ears then the bass is extremely clear and sounds amazing but they don't mix it up like other headphones just to make your ear drums pop.

Sprint Getting Camera-less BlackBerry Bold 9930 Tomorrow?

Posted: 08 Sep 2011 06:35 AM PDT

9930_cameraless_sprint

There has been a camera-less BlackBerry Bold 9930 available from Verizon but Sprint has not carried one yet. We heard rumors before that they would be and according to a leaked flyer scored by Bla1ze @CrackBerry they will be getting it tomorrow (September 9th). These camera-less models are key for government employees and contractors since many facilities are still camera free. While many employers have changed the policies as every device starts shipping with a camera it is interesting to see that there still is a demand for it. I was always curious why RIM does not have a camera-less version of the PlayBook in that case…

Posted: 08 Sep 2011 04:31 AM PDT

On the BlackBerry website, I noticed this good incentive on the PlayBook:
