An Update on BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2.0

Posted: 25 Oct 2011 04:25 PM PDT

Today, RIM has posted on the Blackberry blogs an update on the BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2.0. As most of you who follow RIM, they have been great with promises, but they fail on delivery. This announcement did not fall short on that.

Many expected a release of the new PlayBook OS, with native email clients, Android player and other features first this summer, then this fall, the PlayBook OS 2.0 is now officially been postponed till February 2012. Wow, the features that should have been delivered during the initial launch are now 10 months after.

Don’t get me wrong, I love my BlackBerry 9700 and Playbook, but I am getting tired of RIM’s promises missing the targets all the time. It stops being funny when you hear a new release and you automatically add 6-9 months at least to it.

You can read the whole post from RIM here.

What do you think of this update? Share your thoughts on the comments below.

BlackBerry DevCon 2011 Sessions Now Online and Available Free?!?

Posted: 25 Oct 2011 01:52 PM PDT

BlackBerry DevCon Sessions

Usually RIM does a great job of posting up the sessions from DevCon online including audio and presentations along with sample code. The thing is that content is usually limited only to registered attendees of DevCon. Josep pointed out a thread on the forums where Adam Stanley from RIM confirms that the sessions are now up. The thing is it looks like they are available to anybody who wants to view them for free as long as you fill out a relatively simple registration.

I just went to this link and registered with a new username and password for free and now I can download and view all the sessions from DevCon along with downloading all the content to my BlackBerry. You can watch all the general sessions along with all the specific sessions on Java, Web, Native SDK, Adobe AIR/Flash, Android, Enterprise, and others. They even have some of the sessions offered in Spanish and some of them also have text transcripts!

I am not sure if this is a fluke that everybody can register but if you are interested I would recommend heading to this link and registering free so you can download the content in case RIM changes their mind… Let us know if it works for you!

Blurry Pic of BlackBerry Bold 9790 Shows off New Buttons – Late November Release?

Posted: 25 Oct 2011 01:21 PM PDT

BlackBerry-Bold-9790-Fuzz

The latest out of the rumor mill is news on the BlackBerry Bold 9790. The BoyGenius scored a picture of the device along with an interesting choice of buttons when compared to the current 9700 series since the buttons look like the new Torch 9850/9860. The device is said to have a 2.45 inch 640×480 screen like the 9900. It will also include a full QWERTY keyboard. The same rumor also confirms that RIM will be following up with OS 7.1 (their last OS before BBX) later this year even though this device will probably ship with OS 7.0.

So what do you think of the blur-tastic picture? Any reason you would chose this over a 9900? I have been using the Curve 9350 for the last two days after using the Bold 9930 and I am sort of digging the smaller form factor.

RIM Publishes Full Security Advisory for Old BlackBerry 6 WebKit Vulnerability

Posted: 25 Oct 2011 11:38 AM PDT

BlackBerry Torch 9800 hacked

This latest security advisory goes to show why RIM's current model for carrier approved OS updates is not ideal. RIM put out what they call a security notice about a BlackBerry 6 WebKit browser vulnerability back in March of this year for an exploit found in the BlackBerry 6 Browser at Pwn2Own that month. RIM said back then that devices updated to OS 6.0.0.526+ were safe from the vulnerability. They then finally issued a security advisory this week for the same old vulnerability with quite a few more details about it.

The reason RIM took so long to release the advisory was because RIM had to wait for carriers to approve the security software update. RIM provided the fix within two weeks of learning of the vulnerability. Now SIX MONTHS LATER RIM has found that "a sufficient number of wireless services providers" have made the update available to their customers.

Here is RIM's explanation for the delay:

A sufficient number of wireless service providers must make a security software update for BlackBerry smartphones publicly available to customers before RIM will publish full details of the software update in a Security Advisory. RIM delivered the software updates to its wireless service provider partners. Where a wireless service provider may not have then provided the software updates to all customers, this policy is intended to protect those customers from increased risk of exploitation.

Within two weeks of learning of the vulnerabilities that this Security Advisory addresses RIM tested and delivered fixed software to our wireless service provider partners for their Technical Acceptance process. During the Technical Acceptance process, RIM monitored update availability for nine affected devices available through nearly 500 carriers globally until an availability level was achieved that allowed us to be confident that disclosure of the security vulnerabilities addressed by the software update would protect the interests of the majority of our customers.

RIM continues to work with our partners to expedite the process of software update delivery to BlackBerry smartphone customers.

Note: KB26132 was previously published as a Security Notice to responsibly advise customers about the existence of one of the three vulnerabilities, which had been publicly disclosed, and provide workaround options in lieu of a software update to address that issue for all affected customers. This Security Advisory replaces that Security Notice and provides full details of publicly available software updates that address that issue and two related issues, and urges affected customers to upgrade.

Six months to roll out a relatively critical software update is simply ridiculous in this fast changing security scene… Thankfully the PlayBook QNX based OS has been consistently pushing out security updates within 2 weeks or so.

BlackBerry Torch 9810 Spotted in T-Mobile Inventory System

Posted: 25 Oct 2011 09:16 AM PDT

blackberry-torch-tmobile

We have already heard a couple of solid rumors that the BlackBerry Torch 9810 was coming to T-Mobile USA. Now we have it showing up in the T-Mobile internal inventory system spotted by TmoNews. This more or less fits in with the current rumored November 9th launch date but no price is specified yet. It will be interesting if they will price it as competitively at AT&T.
