SonicAir v2.2 Streams Media from Your PC to your PlayBook Using Subsonic

Posted: 04 Nov 2011 03:02 PM PDT

SonicAir

SonicAir (aka Air Sonic) is an Adobe FLEX implementation of a Subsonic streaming client for the BlackBerry PlayBook. Mir & Windsor Design created this client that streams tons of different variants of Music and Video from your PC to your PlayBook. It uses the powerful Subsonic streaming server on your desktop and you need API access which you get if you donate to the Subsonic project. @Bla1ze pointed out SonicAir to me and I have to say I have been impressed since I started using it. If you are a media buff this is definitely worth it since Subsonic can stream practically everything you throw at it including high def files like 720p MKV videos.

Features include:

  • Listen to music
  • Watch Videos
  • Control Bitrate
  • Cache Lists for offline use
  • Create Playlists
  • Play playlists
  • Use quick list feature to create on the go playlists

Check out their great guide on how to setup SonicAir and Subsonic here. You will then need to download Subsonic and donate to the project to get API access and only then should you purchase SonicAir for $2.99 in App World.

Posted: 04 Nov 2011 12:55 PM PDT

Ronen first let us know all about Jingu and Jingu Messages back in June.  They just emailed us and let us know they have now updated both of these apps and added a smiley app.  If you are looking for great avatar and smiley apps, be sure to check them out in BlackBerry AppWorld.  Both apps are free, and work very nicely if you are looking to add some pizazz to your BBM experience.

Andy Gryc of QNX Talks Automotive Applications with Paul Sykes of Freescale

Posted: 04 Nov 2011 11:13 AM PDT

Update Process

Since RIM acquired QNX I have been very interested in the QNX CAR Application Platform that they have been pushing to car vendors. You don't usually hear much about it since these are usually rebranded by auto makers into their own car systems but QNX has been working with Freescale to bring the QNX platform and the Freescale iM.x platform to more cars. Paul from QNX pointed out a great interview on Embedded-Computing where their staff interviewed Andy Gryc, Automotive Product Manager @ QNX, along with Paul Sykes, Marketing Manager @ Freescale's Driver Information Systems organization, about the implications and challenges of in car systems.

Andy from QNX does make a clear point of mentioning that:

…because the BlackBerry PlayBook is based on the QNX Neutrino OS, developers who create applications for the BlackBerry PlayBook could have a natural migration path between application development on the PlayBook and automotive systems based on QNX Neutrino.

Vlingo Now Available Free Compliments of RIM’s Outage Gift

Posted: 04 Nov 2011 07:44 AM PDT

Vlingo

A few readers let us know that RIM has made the next app available as part of their free apps gift in response to their previous outage last month. They have made the popular voice command app Vlingo free for a limited time which is a huge boon considering its $19.99 price tag. It essentially expands the BlackBerry voice commands to be able to control many different parts of the device by saying things like:

  • "Text John; What’s up?"
  • "find Italian restaurants"
  • "update Facebook; I’m on a boat!"

You can pick up Vlingo free in App World here

BlackBerry Dev Events Calendar

My buddy Josep pointed out to me that RIM has posted up a nice microsite that shows all of their upcoming developer events. These are events hosted by RIM or ones where RIM will have a presence which is nice. All in all a good resource to find where you can meet up with RIM and pick their brains including Hackathons and other events.

Check it out for yourself at www.blackberrydeveloperevents.com

RIM’s Alec Saunders Says BBX “Designed for Dual Core” & Theme Studio Coming in 2012

Posted: 04 Nov 2011 06:39 AM PDT

Screen shot 2011-01-09 at 5.13.32 PM

RIM's new VP of Developer Relations, Alec Saunders, sat down with Al Sacco @CIO for a quick interview on the future of BlackBerry. Most of it seems to cover the same topics we heard at DevCon but there were a few tidbits that are worth pointing out. Alec continues to stress that BlackBerry OS 7 and current devices will "be in market for some time" but we will "see a natural evolution away from the BlackBerry OS Platform" to BBX. The thing is that Alec told Al that:

Unfortunately, because current BlackBerry OS devices do not have dual-core chips they won’t be able to run the new BBX OS, which is designed to run on devices with dual-core CPUs.

We have heard this line a few times all the way up to Mike Lazaridis but then the Colt demo BBX device that is floating around behind the scenes as a developer unit only has a single core. That makes it sound like current BlackBerry 7 devices are never going to see BBX. On the other hand that sort of makes sense since things like bezel gestures don't exist on current hardware. Alec also confirmed that BBX phones at launch will support BES and native PIM along with BlackBerry bridge for tablets in case companies want to use that for security reasons.

Alec also covered development and said that it was a really tough decision for RIM to not support the BlackBerry JDE on BBX. According to him RIM "worked really hard to get the JDE environment on BBX" but it didn't work out. Alec also confirmed that the BlackBerry 7 liquid graphics (read OpenGL) engine stopped RIM from being able to release a Theme Studio dev environment for developers. Supposedly those tools will come in mid-2012 which is a far way off. Al smartly asked how RIM developed the Porsche theme used in the new BlackBerry P'9981 and it turns out that RIM has an internal theme development building tool but it is not shared.

Check out the full interview over @CIO.com for more details
