Drunk RIM Execs Ground Air Canada Flight to Bejing

Posted: 01 Dec 2011 09:19 PM PST

Thanksgiving-classic

You have to love the stuff that gets into the news nowadays. This is not really something we would usually cover but hey its worth a good laugh. It turns out that George Campbell (45) of Conestogo, Ontario and Paul Alexander Wilson (38) of Kitchener proceeded to get crazy drunk on an Air Canada flight from Toronto to Beijing. The flight had to make a stop in Vancouver with its 314 passengers just to get these drunk RIM execs off the plane. They were actually north of Alaska at the time and turned back to get these execs off the plane. They had to forcibly restrain the two men, who were simply unruly not fighting, for over 3 hours.

Both men pleaded guilty to one charge of mischief (I guess that means drunk and disorderly in Canada?) and were given one year probation. Even more so they were ordered to pay Air Canada $35,878 each and are barred from contacting any Air Canada crews or flying the airline for that same year.

Crazy stuff… Now if only The Star would mention if they were carrying any prototype BlackBerry BBX phones… So far RIM has responded by saying that:

"Based on the limited information available at this time, RIM has suspended the individuals involved pending further investigation."

Yes-Wallet3Yes-Wallet4

This has to be one of the weirder press releases and product launches to hit our tip line. Yes-Wallet has announced that it has released a new Pouch web and mobile wallet service/app that will in the future support NFC payments. In other words it looks like they have simply created an app that lets you currently store your VISA and MasterCard credit cards. Since I have never heard of Yes-Wallet before I declined to download their app but feel free to check it out for yourself. I am just excited to start seeing NFC making some waves.

You can find the free Yes-Wallet Pouch in App World or check out the press release below:

YES-wallet Launches Pouch Mobile Wallet Services to Drive Penetration of Mobile Wallets with Customers

London, UK (PRWEB UK) 1 December 2011

YES-wallet.com successfully launched Pouch, a free Mobile and web Wallet Service, that in the future will also support NFC (Near Field Communication) based payments. With 71% of people (Source: Survey by YES-wallet.com of 116 executives at Pouch Launch Event, October 2011) mentioning they are currently exploring, evaluating and considering the idea of implementing wallet services in the upcoming years, YES-wallet.com took this opportunity to introduce its new Pouch mobile application, now downloadable on all major smartphones, and to present very exciting findings collected through a Launch survey on mobile and e-wallet payments.

Following the successful Pouch wallet services Launch Event in London (UK) on October 11th 2011, YES-wallet.com received numerous requests for partnership in exciting new projects going live as early as the first Quarter of 2012. Based on this encouraging first feedback and on future promising developments, it is now clear thatPouch wallet services is all set to usher in a ‘new payments lifestyle’ using smartphones as a wallet. Securely storing credit/debit payment cards, payment receipts, loyalty and coupon information, Pouch enables customers to securely make payments through their smartphones for free. "Merchants perform millions of card transactions per week, and now their card paying customers can create free personal wallets to get instant benefits such as card payment e-receipts, e-coupons and location based services" explained Dr. Chandra Patni, Director of YES-wallet.com. Dr. Chandra Patni further added that "Pouch supports storage of personal credit, debit and pre-paid (SVA) cards in the "My wallet" function which can be used to make payments at web, mobile and physical stores."

Pouch supports roll-out of retail couponing, loyalty and location-based mobile advertising and marketing services, many of which will use NFC in the future. Standard Visa / MasterCard Payment applications are also supported via this wallet service.

E-Wallets and the ability to make payments on Mobile smartphones is set to be one of the most exciting innovations in the payments industry, transforming consumers life style. Services are arriving in UK and around the world. YES-wallet.com created a report to share the results of a survey on mobile and e-wallet payments conducted at the YES-Wallet.com launch event in London, UK. This event was attended by specialists representing: mobile phone operators; Card issuers; Retailers; Payment Service Providers (PSP); Merchants; Software vendors and the media. This is a group who is interested in implementing and learning more on new e-wallet mobile services before and after the arrival of NFC capable mobile phones.

The audience generally agreed that the adoption of Mobile payments would grow significantly in the next four years with a turning point in 2013 where a higher number of people will use their mobiles to make payments with acceptance points becoming commonplace.

When asked what attendees considered to be the most important issue related to e-wallet adoption by consumers, 47% of people highlighted security issues as their main area of concern. Pouch wallet service provides consumer trust through safer card payments. Pouch enables consumers to create and pay with their wallets through participating merchant's websites and to pay for in-store purchases by launching their Pouch mobile application, selecting the card they initially created in the wallet and holding the smartphone in front of the retailers’ POS. In its PCI-DSS (Level 1) certified data centers, Pouch converts the phone data back into card details before forwarding the card authorisation request to the merchant's card Acquirer.

Interestingly, what is emerging from these findings is the attraction for customers and retailers of paying by credit and debit cards in a store using an e-wallet solution installed on an NFC enabled mobile smartphones. NFC phones will over the next few years be out with secure elements, as well as the SIM, as options for loading secure payment applets. To begin with, Pouch running on an NFC phones will use a Point-to-Point encryption service using the phone secure element to securely transport the wallet login credentials together with the wallet holder chosen card payment method reference to the payment gateway which will then extract the card details to perform a magnetic card emulation authorisation with the card issuer.

However, it is largely agreed by the audience that this future trend will first be preceded with wider adoption of e-wallet services on e-commerce platforms. Concerning consumer behaviour and adoption, the majority consumers would most likely subscribe to solutions offered and branded by retailers but managed by a third party like YES-wallet.com.

About YES-wallet.com Ltd:

Will RIM Add a Free BBM Music Tier for it to Take Off?

Posted: 01 Dec 2011 02:20 PM PST

BBM Music BlackBerry Music

When I first heard of BBM Music I really liked the idea. The concept of social music appealed to me and I actually was proud of my selections. The problem I have with the service stems from something I mentioned during our interview with BBM Music Senior Project Manager Nick Patsiopoulos. BBM Music needs to offer something competitive with a free tier to better compete with other offerings.

I simply told Nick that for not much more I can subscribe to Pandora, Slacker, or Spotify and listen to all the songs I want from both my BlackBerry and any computer. There is no free tier like there is with comparable services so it is either pony up $4.99/month or no music for you. I am not sure if I think advertising is the solution but RIM needs to figure this one out pronto.

BBM integration can add sticky-ness to a solid app but there needs to be a solid value proposition if they want you to pay for it. What do you think?

More Carrier IQ Details from RIM – Press Release Coming Shortly

Posted: 01 Dec 2011 11:00 AM PST

 chaos-erupts-newspaper

I would love to just lay the whole Carrier IQ drama to rest but I have been getting questions about it nonstop this week even though it is old news. Still I thought it was interesting to point out a thread (Thanks Fred) on the official BlackBerry support forums by RIM employee Mark Sohm. He has confirmed that a press release is being worked on by RIM. Also of interest is his confirmation that keylogger functionality would not work on BlackBerrys because they can only capture keystrokes when an app is in the foreground (the screen is shown).

Here is exactly what Mark Sohm had to say:

RIM is aware of a recent claim by a security researcher that an application called "CarrierIQ" is installed on mobile devices from multiple vendors without the knowledge or consent of device users. RIM will continue to investigate reports and speculation related to CarrierIQ.

RIM can attest that it does not pre-install the CarrierIQ application on BlackBerry smartphones and has never done so. Furthermore, RIM does not authorize its carrier partners to install the CarrierIQ application on BlackBerry smartphones before sales or distribution and has never done so. RIM also did not develop or commission the development of the CarrierIQ application, nor is RIM involved in any way in the testing, promotion, or distribution of the CarrierIQ application.

If the CarrierIQ application is present on a BlackBerry smartphone, it does not mean that the CarrierIQ application has "hacked" the BlackBerry platform. It means that either the BlackBerry smartphone user or the user's BlackBerry Enterprise Server admin explicitly installed the application and authorized it to run. The user or the user's BlackBerry Enterprise Server admin has full control over which third-party software he or she installs on a BlackBerry smartphone. The BlackBerry smartphone is designed to prompt the user for consent to grant permissions to a third-party application.

All users (of any device from any manufacturer) should always avoid installing and granting permissions to applications from untrusted sources. This simple precaution mitigates the risk of malware or unwanted software being installed on a user's mobile device.

Check out all the details in this forum thread. You can actually see the full dump from the Carrier IQ BlackBerry app here along with being able to download it for yourself here though I would not advise it!

RIM Confirms Carrier IQ Software NOT Installed on BlackBerrys

Posted: 01 Dec 2011 10:37 AM PST

surveillance-webcam

I don't know why everybody all of a sudden woke up to Carrier IQ craziness this past week even though it was revealed awhile ago. Still an offhand comment by the researcher who found it on Android devices, Trevor Eckhart, mentioned that it was also on BlackBerrys. I doubted this was true but I could not 100% confirm or deny. Now RIM has done just that by confirming that Carrier IQ is not installed or authorized to be on handsets from RIM. Here is what they told Reuters:

"RIM does not pre-install the Carrier IQ app on BlackBerry smartphones or authorize its carrier partners to install the Carrier IQ app before sales or distribution,"

"RIM also did not develop or commission the development of the Carrier IQ application, and has no involvement in the testing, promotion, or distribution of the app."

On top of that Rogers and Telus in Canada have gone on record saying they also do not have Carrier IQ software installed on their devices including BlackBerrys. Personally I doubt that carriers could find a way to bypass RIM and shoehorn Carrier IQ on their BlackBerrys without RIM knowing and I also doubt that RIM is lying. If you think of it rationally it would not make sense for countries like India to be going crazy trying to get RIM to help them monitor BlackBerry communications if they already had Carrier IQ doing it…

AT&T & T-Mobile Now Considering Joint Venture

Posted: 01 Dec 2011 10:22 AM PST

school_apples

It seems like AT&T is stalwartly determined to make this deal with T-Mobile. According to the WSJ, AT&T is considering "forming a joint venture that would pool network assets from the two US wireless carriers." This rumored joint venture could have AT&T using the T-Mobile spectrum that they want to badly though it is unclear if AT&T would still have to pay T-Mobile the $4 billion break up fee.

It should be interesting to see how this all plays out. I am not sure how AT&T will fool anybody into thinking that 3 large wireless carriers is better than 4 but who knows. On the other hand if the spectrum sharing between AT&T and T-Mobile went both ways that might be good news for both AT&T and T-Mobile customers. On the other hand that would require some new Quad-Band 3G BlackBerrys since T-Mobile BlackBerrys do not have AT&T 3G frequencies enabled and vise versa…

More Details Clarified for BBX, 4G PlayBook, Native Apps, & More

Posted: 01 Dec 2011 05:29 AM PST

PlayBook Email

I know you guys are dying for more details on BBX and the upcoming PlayBook OS 2.0 update just as badly as I am. Kyle from BBCool scored some more details from the Q&A RIM had after their BlackBerry Innovation event recently. They covered some great stuff but here is the highlight reel:

  • 4G PlayBooks will launch around the same time (early 2012) as the PlayBook 2.0 OS which is scheduled for February 2012. It has been in testing for several months on multiple carriers.
  • PlayBook OS 2.0 will be bringing speed improvements to Bridge without many UI changes. Mostly improvement and functionality. There will be "some updates down the road"
  • RIM has teams working on extending PlayBook video chat into an endpoint for corporate video chat so it is beyond just device to device. (I want to know more!)
  • PlayBook messages and PIM will sync almost as fast as smartphones.
  • The push infrastructure is the same as the current smartphone push but the moderator did not think PIN to PIN messaging was in OS 2.0 yet
  • OS 2.0 will have spell-check with type ahead and word prediction
  • S/MIME encryption will not be available at OS 2.0 launch but will be available shortly after
  • Currently the PlayBook native email does not color code BES vs Personal email
  • BlackBerry Mobile Fusion server can handle 10,000+ users per server compared to the current 2,000 user limit.
  • RIM Plans on making more apps be able to connect to the internet over bridge
  • RIM is looking into other PlayBook sizes
  • The 4G PlayBook will not have voice capabilities beside video chat at first. The initial release will be data and video chat. There will also be third party apps that can make regular calls but nothing from RIM.
  • Corporate and personal contacts are in one general list but the device knows which is which. Any new contact will be corporate by default.

You should definitely check out the full Q&A transcript at BBCool. I just wish if they would have asked how email read/unread/delete etc along with Calendar and Contact sync work between your PlayBook and BlackBerry Smartphone…
