| IM+ Introduces Their Own Cross Platform Messenger “Beep” in Beta Posted: 07 Dec 2011 02:03 AM PST Shape let us know about their latest BlackBerry Beta app which integrates their new Beep cross platform messaging service with IM+. I am not sure if we need yet another cross platform messenger but at least this one is baked into the new IM+. The way it works is by merging your Address Book with your instant messaging client. Everybody on IM+ Beep is using their phone number as their username sort of like how WhatsApp works. Well it is all about how you translate today but Alec Saunders of RIM has confirmed that the BlackBerry 7.1 SDK will be going gold today. They are in Singapore so today may mean the next 24 hours but still that means it is coming out of beta. That is nice to see before the OS actually ships. Now we can only hope that carriers are getting their act together and releasing these 7.1 OS builds starting this month! RIM has finally brought their Twitter for BlackBerry v2.1 update out of beta today. This new version brings my favorite feature, multi-account support, to the masses. | BBX Renamed to BlackBerry 10 After RIM Barred from Using BBX Name Posted: 06 Dec 2011 08:09 PM PST
Now this is a sad day for RIM marketing. After solid names like the Bold and Curve and a very promising BBX name for the future BlackBerry QNX based platform we have RIM changing things again. BASIS has put out a press release that a US Federal court in Albuquerque has banned RIM from using the BBX name. That means RIM was immediately barred from using the BBX trademark at BlackBerry DevCon in Singapore. That has not stopped RIM and they have now renamed BBX as BlackBerry 10 for RIM's next generation smartphones. I guess RIM sees the need to jump directly from 7 to 10 but I think they should have gone with a totally different naming scheme. Still BlackBerry 10 is not a bad name but my guess is people will still call it BBX. Press release from Basis below: US Federal Court Bars RIM (BlackBerry) from Using BASIS’ BBX TrademarkThe United States Federal Court in Albuquerque today granted a temporary restraining order (TRO) against Research in Motion (RIM), immediately barring RIM from using BASIS International Ltd.'s incontestable federally registered BBX trademark at RIM's Asian DevCon on December 7-8 in Singapore. BASIS’ BBX running on a sampling of mobile devices available at http://links.basis.com/buidemos (Photo: Business Wire) RIM had refused BASIS' requests to stop the infringement at the DevCon conference, which resulted in BASIS filing for the TRO. In rejecting RIM's arguments against the issuance of a TRO, the court found that, "The BBX mark is identical to the mark which RIM is allegedly using to present its BBX product (TRO page 8)." and "despite the fact that the two companies are not direct competitors, the parties' respective BBX products are highly related and target the same class of consumers, that is, business application software developers (TRO page 9)." The court went on to concur with BASIS that "The alleged infringement is likely to cause customers and prospective customers to wrongly believe that the software applications created using BASIS's development tools are only compatible with RIM's BBX operating system (TRO page 11)." The order described how the "Courts use a well-established four-part test to decide whether to grant injunctive relief (TRO page 7)" and concluded that "Accordingly, after considering all the factors relative to a determination of whether an injunction should be granted, the Court finds that all factors weigh in favor of BASIS (TRO page 8)." | Latest BlackBerry PlayBook OS Fix Gets Jailbroken Again… Cat & Mouse Game Begins? Posted: 06 Dec 2011 06:51 PM PST
The thing with jailbreaks is that once you have your first then the rest of your code is suddenly open to poke around and find more soft spots to exploit. RIM just patched the Samba exploit that allowed the Dingleberry team to jailbreak/root the BlackBerry PlayBook. Now one of the devs of Dingleberry, @cmwdotme, has announced on twitter that the latest PlayBook OS 1.0.8.6067 has been jailbroken yet again. UPDATE: @cmwdotme clarified for me that this new exploit does not have to do with SSH. He was just making a comment in his tweet.
So any bets on how long this cat and mouse game will last?

So right now, we are hearing that the next Generation BlackBerry devices will be known as BlackBerry 10. It will run on tablets, smartphones and automobiles, with full access to the BlackBerry cloud. It seems like they will showing heavy support towards HMTL5 as well as open-source platforms and gaming engines including Jquery, Dojo and more (future proof across BlackBerry 7, BlackBerry Playbook and BlackBerry 10). BlackBerry developers will now be known as BlackBerry Jam, with sessions, community, zone and also, recognition program. BlackBerry Jam members (developers) would be known as jammers. | Angry Pigs Offers Up Another Angry Birds Clone for BlackBerry Posted: 06 Dec 2011 03:00 PM PST
First we had Angry Farm and now Don let us know about Angry Pigs. The team at SolverLabs has come pretty close to replicating Angry Birds on BlackBerry. Even the menus look the same… The plot of Angry Pigs flips the game on its head with you flinging Angry Pigs at the Big Bad Wolves. Different pics act differently as you would expect.
The game only supports a limited number of BlackBerrys right now but my guess is they will be adding more support soon. Angry Pigs also works on non-touch devices which is nice. You can pick up Angry Pigs in App World for $1.99

RIM has plucked the Dingleberry! They have finally come out of the closet with their documentation on the current root exploit of the BlackBerry PlayBook. They have clarified that the latest BlackBerry PlayBook OS 1.0.8.6067 fixes the exploit that allowed the Dingleberry creators to gain escalated privileges. They don't go into to much detail but this is exactly what system admins were looking for from RIM. RIM has also confirmed the fix on their blog along with mentioning that the new OS brings daylight savings time fixes. OverviewA vulnerability that could allow elevation of access privilege on a BlackBerry PlayBook tablet exists in the BlackBerry PlayBook service used to share files over a USB connection between the tablet and a computer running BlackBerry Desktop Software. This vulnerability cannot be exploited by a remote attacker and it presents a low security risk of elevation of privilege attacks against BlackBerry PlayBook tablet users. Corey pointed out on the forums that RIM is rolling out OS 1.0.8.6067. A few readers have already confirmed this on the tip line and Bla1ze @CrackBerry scored a screenshot. There is no word on if this update fixes the vulnerability that allowed for the Dingleberry exploit but that is my guess. Let us know if you do update and you had rooted previously.

| Chase Finally Releases Mobile Banking App for BlackBerry With Check Deposits! Posted: 06 Dec 2011 10:45 AM PST
The day has finally come. Chase has released their Chase Mobile app for BlackBerry users (for a very limited number of devices). This new app lets you access your account AND deposit checks with your camera. It will also let you send payments and other features including:
There are a few gotchas like support for only 12 BlackBerry models at launch and check deposits not working on devices with 2MP or fixed focus cameras (9900/9930). Still its nice to see that it is finally here. My guess is it will keep on improving and support more devices hopefully very soon! Download Chase Mobile App for BlackBerry in App World. | RIM Shows Off Some Future USB Accessory Tinkering on the PlayBook Posted: 06 Dec 2011 08:47 AM PST I am not sure what took RIM months since DevCon to post up this video but its worth mentioning. Mathias and Fredrik from The Astonishing Tribe were showing off a Arduino platform board hooked up to a PlayBook over USB (it looks like its getting power that way too). RIM is showing this off as the PlayBook being perfect for tinkerers and prototypers but I know there are a good number of developers who want low level access to hardware like the USB, Bluetooth, and more. Alec Saunders confirmed as much in our recent interview with him. The question is when this sort of access will come to the PlayBook OS 2.0 beta so devs can prepare it for the OS 2.0 launch. Hopefully RIM hits the gas and keeps on pushing out significant updates. | BlackBerry PlayBook Dingleberry Root Exploit Explained Posted: 06 Dec 2011 08:20 AM PST
I got a chance to jailbreak my BlackBerry PlayBook with Dingleberry and play with it including Android Market and I found it very interesting to see how the developers managed to gain root access. Two of the devs, @cmwdotme and @xpvqs have explained that Dingleberry takes advantage of the fact that RIM does not sign their backups allowing them to modify the Samba config file (smb.conf) and restore it to execute whatever commands they wish as root. In case you don't know Samba is a popular opensource network file server that RIM uses to allow you to access the PlayBook drives over Wi-Fi. This should be very easy to fix for RIM and according to devs RIM already has a patch ready and has known about the issue for awhile. The thing is that RIM has known about this security issue for awhile. CrackBerry confirmed that they had pointed this out to RIM but it has been pretty common knowledge for awhile. Developers have been struggling with it on the official BlackBerry support forums when they discovered that BlackBerry PlayBook backup files are simply zip files in *.bbb format. This means that anybody can extract apps and other files from the backups and then decompile both AIR and WebWorks apps easily for pirates. That thread is from back in April so RIM has known about this for awhile but we have not seen any changes. RIM will probably roll out a patch for this Samba exploit and the backup signing altogether. ShvartzBerry let us know that the popular free Number Cruncher game got a nice update to v2.0.0.135 this month. This new update brings loads more number crunching fun along with BBM integration. That means you can play Number Cruncher in a head to head live multiplayer game against BBM friends and users. You can also post your score to the global leaderboard. In case you have never played Number Crunchers before the game calls itself a cross between Sudoku and Tetris trying to generate as many sequences of numbers within the time limit like 2,3,4 or 4,3.
NOTE: There were many users reporting performance/lag issues with the previous v2.0 of Number Crunchers but this version is supposed to fix that. Still you will see that many people are still wishing for the older version in App World so beware if you were thinking of upgrading! When I say this is for advanced users I REALLY REALLY mean it. If you are uncomfortable with the command line or simply find these instructions complex just leave it be for now. When Dingleberry was released we mentioned that it just gave you root privileges as of now but it would be up to devs and tinkerers to take it further. That has started happening with developers really digging into the QNX OS before RIM patches it up. One of the developers of the Dingleberry root exploit, @neuralic, managed to get the Android Market running on the PlayBook. This is not the first time this has happened but this time it uses the new Dingleberry root exploit. This is in no way an easy task but I am halfway through so I thought I would share it with you. He posted the instructions on Pastie but you can also find them below. Keep in mind this is all more of a proof of concept for now and we take no responsibility if you mess up your PlayBook or anything else happens.
