Explanation Behind BlackBerry 10 Phones Needing a Chip Coming in Q2 2012

Posted: 16 Dec 2011 09:57 AM PST

Qualcomm LTE

RIM's Co-CEO's stirred up some serious discussion by blaming the lack of a chip for BlackBerry 10 phones delay into the second half of 2012. While I personally think RIM should have revamped the Colt with a dual core processor and HSPA+ 4G I realize they were getting pressure from US carriers to launch a 4G LTE device. Many of us know that the reason RIM has been struggling along with quite a few other manufacturers to launch 4G headsets that are no huge and don't kill your battery in 4 hours. For now Android phones are solving that by making the phones larger and strapping on huge batteries and others like Apple have simply skipped on LTE for now.

QTFan pointed out to Brian in our original post about the delay that AnandTech has a good explanation (from October) of what the whole story is and what chip (Qualcomm) RIM and others are waiting for. Its a great read which you can find here. Let us know if you find more details on the situation. I still feel like RIM is missing out on a major opportunity by not simply releasing a 4G HSPA+ device on all of the carriers other than Verizon… There are 150+ of them worldwide that RIM partners with.

PS: There is a conversation going on in the forums about this too.

BlackBerry PlayBook Native SDK 2.0 Beta 2 Now Available

Posted: 16 Dec 2011 07:05 AM PST

Native SDK Homescreen

Devs get your engines started. RIM has just rolled out a Native SDK 2.0 beta update to beta 2. It adds some cool new features like AIR Native Extension support which should lead to some quasi AIR+Native apps. This new Native SDK has a corresponding runtime of 2.0.0.6149 which is exactly the same as the current PlayBook Dev Beta OS RIM just rolled out.

Here is the change log for the Beta 2 release of the Native SDK 2.0:

  • Device Detection – Working with connected devices is now easier, device and simulator are auto-detected while adding a target.
  • Improved Deployment Setup Wizard – The deployment setup wizard has been streamlined to ease the setup of your development environment.
  • AIR Native Extension Support – New workflows have been added to the IDE to help you build and debug native extensions.
  • Per Project SDK Support – You may now configure your SDK on a per-project basis. For example you could have one project in your space build against the latest release SDK (1.0.8) and another build against the latest developer SDK (2.0).

You can find the full release notes here and download the update at:

What does a $100 million dollar advertising budget look like?

Posted: 16 Dec 2011 06:49 AM PST

One of the few positives out of yesterdays earnings call was the announcement that RIM will finally be aggressively advertising in America. This will be to the tune of $100 million dollars in the next quarter alone. There were rumors a couple months ago that RIM was shopping ad companies so they obviously have picked their company and marketing materials must be in the pipeline. While we don’t know yet what this campaign will look like, I would like to give you a reference point so you can vision the scale that a $100 million dollar budget will bring.

In 2006 the average ad budget for a major studio movie release was around $35 Million.  No official figures have come out since 2006, but, many think the average has gone up to 40-50 million.  Think about how many ads you see for major studio movies, most recently Hugo, The Muppets, Twilight, New Year’s Eve etc et.  When major studios launch campaigns of this level, you can’t help but see the ads, they are EVERYWHERE ALL THE TIME.

With a budget of $100 million, we can expect to be overrun with Blackbery ads… a true Shock and Awe ad campaign. Its unclear at this point what % of the budget will go where.  Mike and Jim indicated that the budget  might also discounts promotions, presumably through carriers.

It will also be interesting to see how they market OS 7.

I have read many people poopooing this marketting effort and saying it will not make much difference.  I see and understand that point of view, but, I have always been one that believes the consumer public, especially the American consumer public, is VERY easily swayed.  If RIM can implement a super aggressive, effective marketting campaign, I think the results will be surprising.

Apple has been telling you for years the iPhone is the best at everything and that Apple invented everything good.  There is nothing to say RIM can’t create their own “distortion field”

No Update to PlayBook OS 2.0.0.6149 Dev Beta? Try This URL

Posted: 16 Dec 2011 06:49 AM PST

PlayBook Register

Normally this would just be a blip on the radar but I have been getting quite a few readers asking me about this today. We told you yesterday that RIM had started to roll out BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2.0.0.6149 of their developer preview beta. Not everybody was seeing the update and it turns out there is a simple solution for that.

BarracudaBob pointed out in the comments that you should register at the SDK site instead of the Android Runtime site. Just register again if you are not seeing the update yet. Enjoy the goodies!

Viper Wants You to Preheat Your Car From Your BlackBerry This Winter

Posted: 16 Dec 2011 06:40 AM PST

Viper SmartStart

Over the years I have had a few friends install Viper's SmartStart system into their cars. The system lets you start, lock, and unlock your car from your BlackBerry or other smartphone. That also means you can remotely start your car to blast the heat before you get in. When Viper pointed that out to me I thought it couldn't hurt to highlight how they want to make the holidays a bit warmer:

  • Viper SmartStart users can remote start their vehicle from anywhere in the world to warm it during winter months, lock or unlock doors, and even get a security alert on their smartphone if their alarm is triggered.
    • This provides great relief for those times when you’re not sure if you locked your car
  • With the SmartStart GPS system, users can ensure their teen is driving safely by monitoring their car’s location, movement and speed. It also has hot spots and proximity settings that alert you when someone takes the car somewhere they shouldn’t.
  • Parents won’t have to worry anymore if their teens are going somewhere they shouldn’t – if the car leaves a set proximity or goes to a hotspot they will receive an alert on their smartphone or can access the location of the car on the SmartStart application
  • The Viper SmartStart application is a free download for iPhone, BlackBerry, Android, and is coming soon for Windows Phone 7, and the in-car Viper SmartStart control module is available for $299 at Best Buy and other authorized Viper dealers. For more information visit www.viper.com/smartstart.
  • Viper is jump-starting the holiday remote start season with Mail-in Rebates up to $100 plus a "Win a Free SmartStart" Sweepstakes, at select retailers now and on the web at www.directed.com/freeprize. Complete details are on the rebate form, which is available in stores and online.

AcousticSheep SleepPhones Review

Posted: 16 Dec 2011 06:00 AM PST

Review: SleepPhones
Price: $39.95 – $54.95 @ Amazon

Problem: All earphones dig painfully in your ear while lying on your side and all headphones are too bulky to lay your head down flat. Most of the time, either option will only last several minutes before causing you to turn over and try another position.

Goal: Finding the most comfortable way to listen to music or watch a program on your phone without disturbing your bedmate or roommate.

Solution: SleepPhones!

I was eager to try out this product from the first photo I saw. When I received the product for review, my first impression was ultra-comfy and simple. I was also happy with the sight of one wire coming out of the band, allaying my fear of waking up tangled and strangled by several wires when I would use my regular earphones for sleeping purposes.

Fit. The headband is a light-weight fleece with some spandex for an easy fit around your head. It is like sleeping on a cloud. The speakers were designed to be thin and covered in material patches that can be adjusted within the headband for proper ear fit. They can be completely removed when you are ready to wash the band. The band can be worn with the cord coming out of the front or the back, depending on how you sleep and where you place your phone or mp3 player. There is an extra convenience of wear the band over your eyes if you are the type of person who needs complete darkness to fall asleep.

Sound Quality. The sound emitting from the speakers is slightly muffled, which is expected when they are covered in two layers of thicker material. I found it to be similar to wearing the most basic earphones while on the subway. However, the purpose of SleepPhones is for wearing them in bed with intent of  falling asleep. Being the case, the lack of perfect sound from these speakers is not something that truly affected me.

Conclusion. I highly recommend SleepPhones for those people who bring earphones to bed. The material is super comfortable, staying light around your face without overheating you. Those precious minutes before sleep are no longer wasted trying to adjust your head on the pillow with the earphones – the SleepPhones band goes on and adjusts in seconds. Although the price may seem a bit steep, I have found them to be truly worth it. They also make a great gift for the holiday season.
