Nuance Packs a Bigger Punch by Acquiring Vlingo

Posted: 21 Dec 2011 02:28 AM PST

Vlingo

Nuance announced this week that they have acquired the popular voice to text and voice recognition app maker Vlingo. Vlingo has made a name for itself in voice recognition in a market that is now making headlines with Apples Siri. RIM already integrates Nuance technology for voice searches and voice commands on BlackBerry smartphones. Nuance claims that the combination of the two complimentary companies will lead to a stronger effort to better compete.

Amazon Considered Acquiring RIM this Summer but RIM Declined

Posted: 20 Dec 2011 03:03 PM PST

school_apples

Got to love the rumor mill around RIM. The latest comes from Reuters which has heard from a source that Amazon hired an investment bank this summer to review some merger with RIM but did not make an offer. These were supposedly informal discussions and it is not clear to Reuters if this ever lead to a "specific price talk." Reuters has heard from other sources that RIM's board does not want their Co-CEO's distracted by acquisition talks like they have for the last few months and focus. The board wants the focus on "launching new phones, better use of assets such as BBM, and restructuring."

That all makes total sense in my book. The board supposedly wants the co-CEO's to set aside any options for a sale. Here is what Reuters source said:

"Selling the company or an economic joint venture is probably not in the cards right now," said the source. "Until you stabilize the platform, people are going to be very nervous about spending $10 billion or more."

Its an interesting read over at Reuters though informal talks of acquisitions really isn't that surprising… Still its interesting.

Both are available in the BlackBerry App World, Santa Matching game is $0.99 and Santa Vs. Frost is $1.99.

Devs: RIM Posts Tutorial For Porting WebOS Apps to BlackBerry WebWorks

Posted: 20 Dec 2011 02:47 PM PST

WebWorks

Josep reminded me about a tip we got that RIM had posted a tutorial explaining to webOS developers who to port their web apps to the BlackBerry WebWorks SDK. There is nothing really fascinating here but it is interesting to see RIM going after the different developer bases. WebOS made some serious headway in terms of what can be done by a web technology "app" and I am curious to see apps migrating from there.

If you are a developer you can find the tutorial on RIM's HTML5 microsite here

Devs: Ripple Emulator v0.9.1 Beta Released – Goes Standalone

Posted: 20 Dec 2011 01:02 PM PST

ripple

Awhile back RIM acquired Ripple to up their BlackBerry WebWorks testing and development tools. They have been pretty quiet releasing updates here and there and their latest is Ripple Emulator v0.9.1 beta for Windows and Mac. This new version is no longer a Chrome Plugin and is rather a standalone app. It also adds the ability to run as a local webserver for testing.

The full list of updates in this beta include:

  • Support for JavaScript® breakpoints in Web Inspector
  • Added SSL support for Microsoft Windows
  • WebWorks File I/O API support (FINALLY!!!)
  • HTML5 Audio/Video support on Microsoft Windows
  • Local solution for emulating your app without configuring your own local web server
  • Ability to work offline after an initial connection to the Internet

I really hope RIM starts picking up the pace with WebWorks development and its tools. Its cool to see solutions like WebGL make it into the product but I am hoping these iterations start rolling out faster and they stabilize the browser on the PlayBook. The PlayBook OS 2.0 browser in the latest beta is much faster but it still crashes often.

You can read more about the Ripple beta release here or download it at the Ripple BlackBerry download site

T-Mobile Details their AT&T Break Up Bounty

Posted: 20 Dec 2011 08:59 AM PST

Deutsche Telekom logo

We heard yesterday that the AT&T acquisition of T-Mobile USA was finally over. We knew that AT&T would owe T-Mobile $3 billion in breakup costs but they hinted at more including a roaming agreement and spectrum. Now T-Mobile's parent company Deutsche Telekom has detailed the bounty they scored.

The companies have agreed to a seven year roaming deal with UMTS roaming in the US only to allow T-Mobile to serve quite a few more customers with better broadband and mobile access. This brings their access from 230 million potential customers to 280. T-Mobile is also getting a large chunk of AWS wireless spectrum in 128 cellular markets "including 12 of the top 20 markets (Los Angeles, Dallas, Houston, Atlanta, Washington, Boston, San Francisco, Phoenix, San Diego, Denver, Baltimore and Seattle)"

Check out the full details in the press release below:

AT&T and Deutsche Telekom terminate agreement on the sale of T-Mobile USA
Dec 19, 2011

  • Deutsche Telekom receives record high break-up fee
  • AT&T will pay Deutsche Telekom USD 3 billion in cash
  • T-Mobile USA will receive a large package of Advanced Wireless Solutions (AWS) spectrum and long-term national UMTS roaming agreement
  • Deutsche Telekom’s guidance and planned dividend policy remain unchanged

U.S. telecommunications company AT&T Inc. and Deutsche Telekom have terminated the agreement on the sale of T-Mobile USA to AT&T. As a result, AT&T will pay Deutsche Telekom the break-up fee agreed in the contract signed by both companies dated March 20, 2011. This is one of the highest payments ever agreed between two companies for the termination of a purchase agreement. It includes a cash payment of USD 3 billion to Deutsche Telekom, which is expected to be made by the end of this year. In addition, it contains a large package of mobile communications spectrum and a long-term agreement on UMTS roaming within the U.S. for T-Mobile USA.

Both companies are in agreement that the broad opposition by the U.S. Department of Justice (DoJ) and the U.S. telecommunications regulator (FCC) is making it increasingly unlikely that the transaction will close. Both companies are of the opinion that important arguments in support of the transaction have been ignored, such as the significant improvement in high-speed mobile network coverage for the U.S. market, as well as the positive employment effects. In addition there was no indication that either authority would move away from it’s non-supportive stance in return for concessions from the parties in terms of the scope and structure of the transaction.

As part of the break-up fee, T-Mobile USA will receive a large package of AWS mobile spectrum in 128 Cellular Market Areas (CMAs), including 12 of the top 20 markets (Los Angeles, Dallas, Houston, Atlanta, Washington, Boston, San Francisco, Phoenix, San Diego, Denver, Baltimore and Seattle).

The UMTS roaming agreement for the U.S. in T-Mobile USA’s favor has a term of over seven years and will allow the company to improve its footprint significantly among the U.S. population and offer its customers better broadband coverage for mobile communications services in the future. Population coverage will increase from 230 million potential customers at present to 280 million. As a result of the agreement with AT&T, coverage will be extended to many regions of the U.S. in which T-Mobile USA previously had neither its own high-speed mobile communications network nor the associated roaming agreements.

The termination of the agreement means Deutsche Telekom will go back to reporting T-Mobile USA as continuing operations in future. Deutsche Telekom’s guidance for the 2011 financial year remains unchanged as a result of this development, with adjusted EBITDA of around EUR 19.1 billion expected. At EUR 6.5 billion, free cash flow is forecasted to remain at the prior-year level or increase slightly. The guidance includes the T-Mobile USA contribution based on the average exchange rate in 2010 of USD 1.33 per euro. The free cash flow forecast does not include the settlement payment of EUR 0.4 billion relating to PTC in Poland or the cash payment of USD 3 billion from the break-up fee to be paid by AT&T.

Deutsche Telekom’s dividend policy also remains unchanged. The annual dividend payments are subject to the necessary board resolutions and other legal requirements.

Even following the termination of the agreement with AT&T, Deutsche Telekom exepects to remain within the communicated ranges for certain financial performance indicators used to assess the financial performance of the company. These are as follows: The ratio of net debt to adjusted EBITDA of the Group is to be between 2 and 2.5, the equity ratio is to be between 25 percent and 35 percent, gearing (ratio of net debt to shareholders’ equity) between 0.8 and 1.2, and liquidity reserves is to cover maturities of at least the next 24 months.

The cash component of the break-up fee directly reduces Deutsche Telekom’s net debt, thereby by strengthening the financial performance indicators affecting the company’s rating.

Deutsche Telekom would like to express its gratitude to AT&T and to Randall Stephenson and his team for the positive cooperation over the past few months. Our working relationship was characterized by fairness and respect at all times.

PlayBook With Torch

I got a bit excited when I saw this new update to BlackBerry Bridge show up on my device. Usually BlackBerry Bridge updates are precursors to new BlackBerry PlayBook OS updates. Turns out this one is just a small update from v1.0.7.4 to v1.0.7.5. It is intended to specifically:

Address a bug where "Add new tablet" button does not appear on some devices.

If you are running into that issue you can update BlackBerry Bridge in App World

Vopium Releases Wi-Fi Calling App for BlackBerry

Posted: 20 Dec 2011 06:58 AM PST

Vopium Wi-Fi Calling

We have not hear from Vopium since they launched their BlackBerry VOIP dialer app back in 2008. They reached out to us again this week letting us know about the launch of their BlackBerry Wi-Fi calling VOIP app that actually makes calls over Wi-Fi. The app supports OS 6 and OS 7 devices and offers some pretty nice calling plans. You can check out their app in App World with 5 free minutes of calling. More details can be found in the announcement below or at vopium.com/blackberry-beta

Vopium Launches First Real BlackBerry Wi-Fi Calling App for Consumers

International and Domestic Wi-Fi Calling to All Vopium Users is Free,
Including to Those with Android, iPhone, Symbian and Windows Mobile Phones

COPENHAGEN, Dec. 19, 2011 – Although calling apps for the BlackBerry are widely available, they suffer from limitations and carrier-imposed requirements that undermine the benefits. Vopium, which has established an industry first with its BlackBerry Wi-Fi calling app, eliminates those drawbacks and provides consumers and business users with free international and domestic Wi-Fi calls, as well as international calls over GSM and CDMA for as little as less than 1 cent per minute.

Vopium is the first VoIP service provider to offer a Wi-Fi calling app through BlackBerry App World. The Vopium app does not require users to connect with a local call – a major limitation of many other Wi-Fi calling apps. Unlike UMA-based Wi-Fi calling services provided by a few mobile operators, the Vopium app offers least-cost routing to both mobile and landline numbers whenever you're connected to Wi-Fi.

This design provides users significant savings with no trade-offs in call quality. For example, U.S. BlackBerry owners can make Wi-Fi calls with Vopium to mobile or landline numbers globally without their carrier's international charges because the calls are routed through Vopium's network. The Vopium users don't consume their cellular voice minutes, aren't limited to only calling other Vopium users and avoid the many hassles of using a calling card.

When connected to Wi-Fi, there are no international-roaming charges, so when traveling internationally, Vopium users can make local and international calls to mobile or landline numbers for as little as less than 1 cent per minute. When the other party also has a Vopium app on their Android, BlackBerry, iPhone, Symbian or Windows Mobile smartphone, Wi-Fi calls and text messages are free.

The Vopium app makes it easy for users to know if they are connected to and placing calls via Wi-Fi. Vopium designed the app to minimize battery consumption, so users can make frequent Wi-Fi calls and still have battery life that lasts at least a full day. This makes Wi-Fi calling a viable replacement for office desk phones and home phones.

"The new Vopium BlackBerry app is the latest example of our commitment to provide consumers and business users with high-quality, low-cost international and domestic calling," said Vopium founder and CEO Tanveer Sharif. "Unlike other Wi-Fi calling apps that rely on bridging and other limited architectures, the Vopium BlackBerry app frees users to make calls in more places and on their terms. No other BlackBerry Wi-Fi calling app can match Vopium's combination of savings, convenience, battery life, wireline interoperability and mobile operator independence. This app democratizes Wi-Fi calling for BlackBerry users, with no caveats and gotchas."

Available now in beta version, the Vopium app supports BlackBerry smartphones running OS 6 or later versions. The app is available directly from Vopium at http://vopium.com/blackberry-beta and from BlackBerry App World at https://appworld.blackberry.com/webstore/content/68003.

About Vopium

Vopium A/S, the award-winning mobile VoIP provider, delivers mobile phone calls without borders. With the Vopium app, customers can make international mobile phone calls that feel, sound and are priced like local calls. Taking advantage of VoIP and GSM technologies, the Vopium app works across all major mobile operating systems and on more than 900 handset models, from smartphones to feature phones.

With more than 1 million users in 52 countries, Vopium powers reliable, cost-effective mobile communications around the world. Vopium is listed on the NYSE Euronext Paris Exchange. For more information, please visit vopium.com.
