| RIM’s Newest Board Member Prem Watsa is Betting Big on RIM Posted: 25 Jan 2012 02:59 AM PST A friend of mine pointed out to me that the addition of Prem Watsa (Wikipedia) as an independent board member on RIM's board may be more than a simple appointment. As of September he was the fourth largest investor in RIM after Primecap Management and both Mike Lazaridis and Jim Balsillie. Watsa was announced as a new board member after Mike and Jim stepped down. Watsa runs Fairfax Financial Holdings and is sort of the Warren Buffett of Canada. He told Bloomberg that he might buy more shares of RIM now that he is a board member. Just like Buffett, Watsa is known for perceiving value where the market may not. According to the Globe & Mail he has a history of tackling companies in trouble and turning them around. Watsa is usually very reserved but he is stepping into the spotlight for RIM which makes me wonder what he has in store… Watsa specifically told the Financial Post that "Mike asked me to join the board" and he recieved assurances that his "technology genius" would not leave the firm. He even went further to say that "Mike's not going anywhere…. If he were going to retire, I would not have gone on the board." Anybody else think there is something going on behind the scenes? We are starting to see some of the fruits of RIM's Android Player now that BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2.0 is almost upon us. LastPass has released LastPass Password Manager Premium for the BlackBerry PlayBook as long as you are running PlayBook OS 2.0. It gives you access to the very popular LastPass service with a 14 day trial after which it requires a $1/month LastPass subscription. Posted: 24 Jan 2012 12:51 PM PST Tiffany let us know that RIM and Verizon are throwing a sweet contest in the US for anybody to enter. The contest is broken down into three challenges. The crazy part is that Verizon and RIM are giving away FOUR BlackBerry smartphones to the top 40 voted submissions in each challenge along with FOUR $50 Verizon gift cards that can be used for one month of free data service. In other words Verizon & RIM are giving away 480 phones (they don't specify what model) and $24,000 of free service and that is not even the grand prize! The grand prize is a trip for 4 to Orlando, Florida. | Rumored BlackBerry Roadmap for 2012/2013 With BB10 Phones & HSPA+ PlayBook Posted: 24 Jan 2012 09:11 AM PST
As usual you always have to take rumors with a grain of salt. I know for a fact that this latest rumor from the BoyGenius is not all inclusive for 2012 but it does give you a better idea of what is coming from RIM in 2012/2013. This rumor confirms previous ones that have a HSPA+ PlayBook with a 1.5Ghz processor coming in May/June. That is simply a slightly updated version of the current PlayBook OMAP4 processor that we mentioned previously. The BlackBerry London is supposedly coming in September along with a QWERTY Bold in December. Here is what the BoyGenius is hearing for the next 15 months from RIM:

JF let us know that RIM has posted up a knowledge base article with the new IT policy definitions for OS 7.1 that BES administrators can import into their installations. It includes six new IT policies that can be constrained on OS 7.1 devices with some interesting new additions. Five of the definitions are not anything drastically new but they do mention a new SecureKey Browser Plug-in. Here is the full list of new IT Policy definitions which can be downloaded here:
From what I have been able to find the SecureKey browser plug-in seems to be part of a two factor authentication service that is being championed by a few companies. Here is how CrunchBase describes the solution:
In other words SecureKey utilizes NFC in the latest BlackBerrys to offer up a form of two factor authentication. For example, employees could access certain internal systems by swiping a NFC card against the NFC back of their BlackBerrys. Alternatively it could be used by credit card companies to allow you to checkout on a website by swiping your credit card against the back of a BlackBerry. | Great Analysis of Top US Carriers & Their LTE Spectrum Holdings Posted: 24 Jan 2012 06:57 AM PST
I have been meaning to do the research into the different 4G spectrum holdings of carriers in the US when AT&T clamored that they needed more spectrum in their bid for T-Mobile. When that deal fell through I shelved the story but I am glad to see that Brad Reed from Network World did the full research. He dug into the top US carriers and charted out their spectrum holdings and constraints. He explains why Verizon is best set for a faster LTE rollout and what AT&T and Sprint are waiting on for theirs. Electronic Arts has updated their free offering of Need For Speed: Undercover for the BlackBerry PlayBook to version 2.1. This update contains no change log, and it is theorized that it may simply be an update to prepare for the PBOS 2.0 release due in February. I have seen reports that it loads a bit faster, but no other changes have been found as yet, so if you find any differences, please post in the comments and let us know! | FileScout & FileScout Lite Updated With Improved Zip Handling in v2.8 Posted: 24 Jan 2012 05:38 AM PST
My favorite BlackBerry file manager, FileScout, just got a nice update to v2.8.0.1. This new update brings new goodies but mostly improves the ZIP (Aka file archive) handling features of the app. EmacBerry has rewritten the zip file handling code which has led to some nice benefits like removing the limitation on file sizes of zip archives. The only remaining limitation is that it does not read password protected ZIP files. You can pick up the latest version of FileScout Premium in App World or you can pick up the donationware FileScout lite free from EmacBerry. Here is a change log for v2.8.0.1:
