TrapCall Restricted Number “Unblocker” Now Supports OS 7 and 7.1

Posted: 26 Jan 2012 02:45 AM PST

TrapCall TrapCall2

Some of you may have heard or TrapCall before but in case you have not its worth noting the service. TrapCall is a subscription service coupled with a BlackBerry app that attempts to solve the problem of annoying blocked calls. There is nothing more annoying than sitting in a meeting to receive a call from a restricted (aka blocked) number…

Here’s where TrapCall comes into play:

  1. A call comes into your BlackBerry (or other phone).
  2. The TrapCall app (available free from App World at http://appworld.blackberry.com/webstore/content/25023), which runs silently in the background, automatically forwards all the blocked calls to the TrapCall service.
  3. The TrapCall service "unblocks" the number and then forwards it back to your phone — transparently within a matter of seconds.
  4. You can now decide whether to answer the call or let it go to your voicemail — either way, you now have the number from which the call originated.

Additionally, you can permanently "blacklist" problematic callers (i.e., never to be heard from again!):

"Every time you ignore a call from a blacklisted caller, they’ll hear a message telling them your number has been disconnected."

There are a variety of plans available for the service (yes, the app is free, but the service itself is not) beginning at $4.95 per month with annual subscription discounts available.  Check it out at http://TrapCall.com. TrapCall v1.0.3 is now OS v7 (and v7.1) friendly, including support for higher resolution screens.

Secure Browser gets updated to 1.0.9.53

Posted: 25 Jan 2012 05:06 PM PST

Secure Browser for the Playbook just got a nice little update.  If you are unfamiliar with Secure Browser, it is a light weight alternative to the native browser on your PlayBook that puts your security as its number one priority.  It passwords your favorites, doesn’t allow access to your history.  Secure Browser also allows you to choose which browser you want to be identified with when using different sites.

Here are some of the updates in 1.0.9.53

* Text Reflow added (Thanks HaTaX!)
* Stopping between tabs wasnt fixed, now it is
* More options
* Added logging options on Advanced tab
* Misc bug-fixes (smaller)

sb1
sb2
sb3
sb4
sb5

You can find a full list of changes on other version directly on File Archive Heaven.  Grab a copy for yourself in AppWorld, and if you ask me $1.99 isn’t much for great security.

RIM Employee Porting Wikipedia Mobile to the BlackBerry PlayBook

Posted: 25 Jan 2012 02:56 PM PST

Wikimedia PlayBook

One of RIM's employees that they gained from their TinyHippos acquisition, @gordtanner, is working on a fun project. The Wikipedia app for Android was built by the Wikimedia crew and in two weeks hit over 350k installs on Android with a 4.5+ star rating in two weeks. It was built in PhoneGap and opensourced which is where Gord comes in. He decided to take the app and port it for the BlackBerry PlayBook. He ran into a small rendering issue in Ripple which he logged for fixing and then created the Wikimedia app for the PlayBook.

Gord is currently working on working his code into the Wikipedia Mobile main branch and releasing it on App World. Hopefully he gets cracking soon! You can check out his progress in his post about the porting process.

Rumor: Sprint Discontinuing Current 7” Wi-Fi BlackBerry PlayBook

Posted: 25 Jan 2012 02:44 PM PST

PlayBook EOL Sprint

We have heard rumors before of carriers discontinuing the BlackBerry but they never really pushed it that hard. Sprint was one of the first to carry it especially when they planned on following up with a WiMax variant but when Sprint axed its WiMax future that PlayBook variant was shelved. Now we are hearing a rumor from TechCrunch that Sprint plans on an expected end of life for the current BlackBerry PlayBook Wi-Fi only 7" tablet in late January. That means they will probably no longer sell it in stores though that it subject to change.

The question is are they just not selling it through carriers or is there something else coming? I know RIM pissed off the carriers with BlackBerry Bridge since it did not provide them a revenue stream but we know a cellular enabled PlayBook is in the works. Only time will tell!

Pure Nostalgia With Free Legend of Zelda Game for BlackBerry Smartphones

Posted: 25 Jan 2012 11:19 AM PST

Legends of Zelda-w200-h200 Legends of Zelda2-w200-h200

I have to preface this by saying that this is definitely not the idea Legends of Zelda experience but it is fun to reminisce. GameVNS has released the Legends of Zelda game in App World for BlackBerry smartphones. It uses the MeBoy nintendo simulator so the frame rate is not ideal but the game is definitely playable. Truthfully the main reason I installed it was just for the pure nostalgia of playing a series I have not seen in years.

Hopefully this game does not get yanked out of App World but you can download Legends of Zelda now at this link. Keep in mind that when you start the game you should hit the menu button and set your button mappings for the game otherwise it wont work. Let us know what you think!

PS: Anybody else think its odd that a simulator would make it past the App World reviewers?

Official Bluetooth BlackBerry Mini Keyboard With Trackpad for PlayBook Coming Soon

We heard rumors that RIM was working on a wireless keyboard case for the BlackBerry PlayBook back in April of last year. Since then they have been very quiet on that front though I have been keeping an eye out for it. I was sent a slide deck by one of our sources who told me that the keyboard is now shipping to BlackBerry distributors and should probably be available soon. My guess is that it will coincide with the PlayBook OS 2.0 launch.

We also have more details on how the new BlackBerry Mini Keyboard works with the PlayBook. Here is a breakdown of the features listed:

  • Both a keyboard and a touchpad
  • Can last up to 30 days on a charge
  • Comes with a case that folds over your PlayBook
  • Multitouch touchpad with one finger left click and two finger right click (for remote desktop apps)
  • Mouse scrolling with two fingers on the touchpad
  • Charges via MicroUSB

Hopefully we will get a launch date and pricing soon! Check out all the slide deck for the BlackBerry Mini Keyboard below:

AGK Brings Their Cross Platform Gaming IDE to the BlackBerry PlayBook

Posted: 25 Jan 2012 09:05 AM PST

agk_ide_smackit

AGK is another cross platform SDK that has just made its way onto the BlackBerry PlayBook. Duke from OSBB noticed that App Game Kit (AGK) has released the player for their gaming platform for the PlayBook in App World. This follows a similar concept to other SDK's where you write the game once hand easy publish it to multiple platforms. The licensing for AGK is not bad at about $111 for indie developers and $1000 for large developers.

Definitely worth checking out AGK at www.appgamekit.com or their player in App World if you are a game developer.

BlackBerry PlayBook Rapid Travel Charger $19 @ Walmart

Posted: 25 Jan 2012 06:40 AM PST

Walmart PlayBook Charger

Walmart in the US has a nice discount on the BlackBerry PlayBook Rapid Travel Charger. As a reminder this charger pumps out 2A over a different cable than the usual MicroUSB and pushes out 2A for what RIM calls a Rapid Charge. It attaches magnetically to the PlayBook and keeps your MicroUSB port free. It originally sold for about $70 but Thomas let me know (via Techbargains) that Walmart is selling it for $19 in the US. Shipping to your local Walmart store is free and shipping to your house will cost you about $3 from what I can tell.

Marmalade Releases Speedy Biker Xtreme for the BlackBerry PlayBook

Posted: 25 Jan 2012 05:45 AM PST

Speedy Speedy2

We now have another Marmalade game for the BlackBerry PlayBook. This one is called Speedy Biker Xtreme and has you speeding across 22 tracks around the world with jumps and all. It sort of reminds me of Excite Bike from back in the day. It tries to keep the physics right with what they call "Rag doll effects" which is entertaining. Its not the most amazing racing game on the PlayBook but for the price it is definitely fun.

Check out Speedy Biker Xtreme for $0.99 in App World
