The team at TmoNews scored an interesting invite to a "What's Next – Come see what BlackBerry has in store" event on March 15th in Washington, DC. The invite does highlight the BlackBerry 7 logo though I am not sure what BlackBerry 7 news RIM has in store that warrants a wait for March 15th. Who knows it could be the 3G+ PlayBook or something else. The event being in Washington could highlight RIM targeting the government crowd but this is all speculation. Only time will tell! | Possible Prerelease BlackBerry 10 Images Show Up With Widgets & More Posted: 13 Feb 2012 06:51 PM PST RIM has been pretty cagey about what the different experience will be for BlackBerry 10 when it finally comes to phones in the second half of this year. Kevin @CrackBerry scored a new slide deck from a tipster that was supposedly prepared for one of RIM's external agencies as a briefing for BlackBerry 10. The screenshots of what BlackBerry 10 will possibly look like superimposed on Torch 9860s & 9810s seems to be the highlight more than the other content. The screenshots show off something like a mix between Androids widgets and Windows Phones widget tiles with details provided on similar tiles.
The images also show folders on the homescreen and redesigned icons that look very slick compared to the current crop. Also notice BBM and Maps highlighted along with newer apps like cut the rope and a calculator that looks like the PlayBook app. The unified mailbox (universal inbox) also makes a show in the screenshots and looks like a cleaner version of the current design. | TAT Helps RIM Redesign BlackBerry Developer Microsites Posted: 13 Feb 2012 02:37 PM PST
I noticed during DevCon that RIM had revamped their BlackBerry Developers welcome homepage along with a few of the Microsites. Tim @ RIM's DevBlog shared a bit of background on the updates and how this facelift is intended to help devs find the tools they want. He also shared that they have "been working with the design groups from TAT to create a streamlined design to get you the information you're looking for FAST!" They also seem to be focusing more on the Native & WebWorks frameworks since those are the future of BlackBerry.
The other interesting thing worth mentioning is that Tim promised that "a BlackBerry Theme Studio website is on the way as well, so stay tuned…" That should hopefully mean that we will be seeing an official Theme Studio v7 soon. Its nice to see RIM reworking their developer messaging into something that was more than just renaming it to BlackBerry Jam. They are focusing on helping devs find how they can make money, what platform to choose, and how to find help and other devs. According to RIM they built the sites to:
Now if only they can get a team to rework the setup of the developer tools and services to be more streamlined like a one stop wizard that shows you what tools you need, gets you code signing keys, helps you set it all up, and gets your App World vendor account setup. | Three Free Valentine’s Day Themes Show A Love Story Unfolding Through Wallpapers Posted: 13 Feb 2012 10:47 AM PST
Ellen from 7langit let us know about a new line of free themes they have released that take a creative approach that fits perfectly with Valentine's Day tomorrow. The first is called Love Battery (BlackBerry OS 7 compatible!) and is sort of a half theme half app that changes the background wallpaper on your BlackBerrys as the battery life goes up and down. When the battery is full the lovers, Valencia and Martin, are closer together and as it dies they move apart. According to Ellen the application has been downloaded for over 5000 times in the 3 days after it was released.
The have another one called Angel Shine where two angels are kissing when the battery is full and they move farther apart as the cell signal goes down or battery goes down. Last but not least is Valentine Shine that chooses five pictures from a specified folder on your SD card to rotate through when you scroll through the apps. | US Government Looking to buy 63 to 18,000 Tablets to Replace Flight Manuals Posted: 13 Feb 2012 10:23 AM PST
Quite a few readers sent in an article today from Bloomberg BusinessWeek which claimed that the US Airforce was looking to buy 18,000 iPad 2's to act as Electronic Flight Bags. It turns out that the Air Force is actually looking for "a minimum of 63 and a maximum of 18,000, iPad 2, Brand Name or Equal devices" which would throw PlayBook and Android devices into the mix. Sites like The Verge noticed this discrepancy and NextGov proceeded to correct their previous article. This was after Lt. Col. Glen Roberts, AMC public affairs director, said the command "is looking for a tablet device, not necessarily an iPad." This makes me wonder if RIM is planning on making a serious play to the US government since they are still the only FIPS certified tablet. It would be a great way for RIM to bring in a lower price since the RFP notice on the government website states that they are using the "Lowest Price Technically Acceptable Source Selection Process" for choosing a vendor. Either way its exciting to see that PlayBook OS 2.0 is finally going to let RIM seriously compete in the tablet space. | RIM Extends Free Developer PlayBook Offer till March Posted: 13 Feb 2012 09:51 AM PST
There are quite a few developers (including myself) scrambling this weekend to make the deadline today for the free BlackBerry PlayBook. In case you missed it RIM offered up a free PlayBook to any developer that submits a viable app into App World by February 13th. Now, earlier on, we reported that Alec Saunders (@ASaunders), RIM's head of developer relations, mentioned on Twitter today that RIM plans on extending the submission deadline for the free PlayBook "by a couple of days". Well, it seems like this is actually true! According to the BlackBerry developer blog, they will be extending this offer until 11:59 PM EST on March 2, 2012 for developers to submit, whilst you must be registered by 11:59 PM EST on February 15, 2012. | RIM Planning on Extending Free Developer PlayBook Offer by a Few Days? Posted: 13 Feb 2012 07:58 AM PST
There were quite a few developers scrambling this weekend to make the deadline today for the free BlackBerry PlayBook. In case you missed it RIM offered up a free PlayBook to any developer that submits a viable app into App World by February 13th. I have heard that RIM's team has been working around the clock to approve new App World vendors and app submissions and they have been sending out emails to qualified devs. Devs who submitted early are even starting to receive shipment of their free PlayBooks. Harris let me know that Alec Saunders (@ASaunders), RIM's head of developer relations, mentioned on Twitter today that RIM plans on extending the submission deadline for the free PlayBook "by a couple of days" with more details coming soon. RIM also mentioned that developer entries for the free PlayBook are based on the submission date and not the approval date so don't get antsy if your app is not approved or is even rejected. Hopefully we will hear more soon! Also its interesting to see Alec pointing out publicly that it is a "Big day at the HQ" (QNX World Headquarters) with rumors swirling that BlackBerry 10 devices will be shown off to employees or maybe its just prep for a PlayBook 2.0 launch! | BlackBerry Messenger v6.1.0.68 Hotfix Released in Beta Zone Posted: 13 Feb 2012 07:46 AM PST Ricky pointed out to me that RIM has decided to keep the BlackBerry Messenger v6.1 beta open a little longer in the Beta Zone. They have just put out v6.1.0.68 in Beta Zone which brings some small hotfixes reported by users. Nothing big but here is the list:

| RIM Board Member Roger Martin Talks Out Against Critics Posted: 13 Feb 2012 07:37 AM PST
You usually do not get to hear much from board members especially at RIM. That is why I found it very interesting to read this interview of Roger Martin, the dean of business at the University of Toronto and a RIM board member of 5 years, with The Globe and Mail. He came on to help them deal with the options backdating scandal in 2005 and stayed on. The interview with Martin is quite candid and really gives you a taste of the people on the board. | ShopBlackBerry PlayBook Prices Return to $299, $399, and $499 Posted: 13 Feb 2012 06:35 AM PST
It seems like RIM has ended their promotion on the BlackBerry PlayBook models on ShopBlackBerry this weekend. Lego Joe pointed out to us that they have returned the prices to $299 for the 16GB model, $399 for the 32GB model, and $499 for the $64GB model. I am not sure if RIM will be continuing those prices or discounting it again but who knows. Some retailers still have the $199+ prices so keep an eye out for them like Walmart. | SNL Has Fun Parodying Verizon’s 4G Advertising Campaign Posted: 13 Feb 2012 05:38 AM PST
Verizon has been doing an awful job of promoting their 4G network by explaining why it is important to customers and the differences between their 4G devices. I know quite a few of you are waiting for RIM to release their 4G PlayBook and upcoming 4G BlackBerry 10 phones but hopefully by then RIM can get a good messaging strategy down to explain it to non techies.
