India Gives Up on BES Email Access as RIM Sets Up “Servers” in Mumbai

Posted: 20 Feb 2012 09:25 AM PST

surveillance-webcam

I am not sure what to make of this latest report but RIM has been working closely with the Indian Home Ministry to resolve some issues. The main thing the Indian government was asking for was for RIM to provide a "mechanism for lawful interception of its messengers services." According to The Hindu RIM has now provided that capability by setting up "Servers" in Mumbai and will be inspected soon.

The interesting part is that it looks like the Indian officials have given up on accessing BES communications. This is something RIM could not give them access to even if they wanted to. They told the Hindu that:

However, there was a climb down by the government on intercepting mail sent through BlackBerry Enterprise Services (BES) which decrypts the messages and sends it to email server of the service provider where it remains stored in decrypted form. Then the message is pushed to the BlackBerry device in encrypted form.

The DoT secretary informed that currently there are about 5000 Enterprise Servers for BES. Director Intelligence Bureau Nehchal Sandhu noted that these are communications between the employees of the enterprise only and, therefore, are not of "high concern" for security or Intelligence agencies.

"However, it was decided to obtain list and location of the servers from telecom service providers," the presentation said.

I am not sure why they would think that BBM messages were of high concern but military grade encrypted messaging is not but hey we are glad to see it resolved! Hopefully this means the end of the Indian government trying to ban BlackBerry services.

Giveaway – MyOwnHotKeys

Posted: 20 Feb 2012 08:01 AM PST

MyOwnHotkeys MyOwnHotkeys2

Just earlier this week, Ronen introduced to us this unique application called MyOwnHotKeys, which is essentially an application to help create shortcuts for your device. Unlike other applications, the new MyOwnHotKeys application allows you also change the default hotkeys on your BlackBerry to whatever you want and also set shortcuts for multiple presses on the keyboard. The team over at Foneware has kindly sponsored us 15 copies of this application for a giveaway.

With the ability to create shortcuts from multiple presses on the keyboard, this would mean that you can override the default keyboard shortcuts set on your BlackBerry and also setup multiple keypress actions. For example, you can set one click on the M key to open up messages, double click to open Memopad, and triple click to open Maps, and even quadruple click to open up Google Maps. This application would hence, give you up to over 100 fully customizable hotkeys all directly accessible from BlackBerry Home Screen.

Also, these hotkeys can also launch your macro shortcuts in the ShortcutMe application.

However, they also did notice that whilst it overrides most of the default hotkeys on the device, some versions of BlackBerry OS, however, does not allow 5 out of 26 hotkeys to be configured by this or any other applications. But, the good news is, for those hotkeys that can’t be modified, you can still use double, triple and quadruple click hotkeys by simply clicking another key on the BlackBerry as your first click.

This application an absolute must for anyone who uses Application Shortcuts and is available for BlackBerry devices running OS 4.5.0 or higher, costing just $2.99. Get the application from:

GIVEAWAY: The team over at Foneware has kindly sponsored 15 copies for our BerryReview readers, and to have a chance at winning a copy, simply leave a comment below. Take note that all comments must be left before Friday, February 24th. You must also be registered and logged in to BerryReview when leaving comments for them to be included in the giveaway draw.
