BlackBerry PlayBook Best Selling Tablet Last Week In Canada

Posted: 02 Mar 2012 03:25 PM PST

ScreenHunter_02 Mar. 02 17.06The BlackBerry PlayBook is selling in Canada, enough to be the #1 Selling tablet at both Best Buy, and Future Shop. RIM let us know about the news earlier today and they also mentioned it on Twitter.  The combination of the PlayBook OS 2.0 update, and lower prices is driving consumers to get their hands on the device. I have done some traveling and each time somebody sees me using the device they ask about it. The first thing they usually say is that the UI looks cool, and the swiping gestures look easy to use. The PlayBook saw a rocky launch, specially from critics who love the idea of bashing RIM each time they have a chance, but is good to see most of those negative news changing slowly. Things can only get better for BlackBerry now that we know that PlayBook OS 2.0 will be the foundation for BlackBerry 10 devices.

RIM also sent out the following information about the growing interest from developers:

We're seeing some strong interest from Android developers, too – close to 6,225 apps have been submitted to BlackBerry App World as of February 29, 1,827 apps have been approved and there are over 3,000 pending review.

BlackBerry PlayBook 2.0 offers users new features that include the integrated email client with a powerful unified inbox, social Integration with Calendar and Contacts apps, the updated BlackBerry® Bridge™ app, improved mobile productivity, and new apps and content.

HTML5Rocks.com Developers Resource Site Gets Redesigned

Posted: 02 Mar 2012 12:56 PM PST

HTML5Rocks

The popular HTML5Rocks website got a nice update in the last few days that gave it a huge visual overhaul. The new site is still an awesome resource for web developers who want to learn more about the power of HTML5. Google is a big contributor to the site though they have published tutorials from many other contributors. You will find great content on bleeding edge topics like WebGL which RIM just added to the PlayBook and is the first tablet to support the technology.

Check out the site at www.html5rocks.com

RIM Looking to Fill 600 Positions in Waterloo Ont. with BlackBerry Job Fair

Posted: 02 Mar 2012 09:51 AM PST

 RIM Careers

RIM did a drastic cut of their workforce by 2,000 employees a bit back but they are still growing. They just held a job fair in Toronto with the intent to fill 600 positions in Waterloo, Ont. with some openings also in Mississauga, Ont. RIM also has had a bunch more stops in their recruitment push with job fairs in Halifax and Dallas, Texas.

CBC Canada got a hold of a few of the job applicants at the Toronto fair to get a feeling of what they are thinking. Most of these new positions are in "software development and testing, hardware engineering and technical support" so hopefully RIM is prepping for a huge BlackBerry 10 phone launch.

If you are interested in a job at RIM check out www.rim.com/careers/

More Than Words: Fightin’ Words (Freemium) Gets Chat and a Facelift

Posted: 02 Mar 2012 08:02 AM PST

Fightin’ Words, everybody’s favorite Words With Friends clone on the BlackBerry platform, has been given a welcome update. Version 1.30.4 brings with it updated graphics, improved rendering on 7.0/7.1 devices, and adds a new in-game Chat feature. Simply press the SYM key on your keyboard, or hit the Menu key and choose Chat. Both players must have Chat enabled for this feature to work.

My experience with FW thus far has been sketchy, but still a lot of fun. I kept it despite the frequent connection issues, slow performance, and improper rendering on my 9900. In the previous version,my tiles were mis-aligned along the bottom, and the point values were almost impossible to read. In addition, the game seemed to perform very slowly when not on wifi, taking a long time to check words, and losing connection frequently. The new update has happily resolved all of these issues. Response time via mobile data is quick, the updated graphics look much more polished and bright, and the board now has 3 levels of zoom and bigger tiles, making it nice and easy to read. I daresay I may just have to pay for the ad-free premium version of Fightin’ Words. Much thanks to InterWorks, Inc for bringing this wordplay amongst companions to the BlackBerry platform and keeping up with it!

Personal Rating: 4.5 Berries out of 5 (When do we get full touchscreen support for the Bold, folks? ;) )

Download Fightin’ Words Free from BlackBerry AppWorld.

Purchase Fightin’ Words from BlackBerry AppWorld.

RIM Awarded Patent for Pattern Tap to Unlock

Posted: 02 Mar 2012 07:11 AM PST

 RIM Lock Unlock Patent

RIM was just awarded a patent for their "System and method for locking and unlocking access to an electronic device" that they applied for back in 2006. Engadget spotted the fact that the patent was just approved this week. The patent describes users tapping a pattern on a device to unlock or lock the device or allow access to a specific application. The patent takes things a step further by having you tap in a pattern and also take into account accelerometer data along with how hard of a tap you make so others watching you cannot easily see the combination.

Check out the full patent for yourself here. Personally I love the current unlock method on the BlackBerry PlayBook where you just swipe from one bezel to another. On the other hand it is not the most secure and still requires a password if you have one set…

Free Vibrate on Call Connect is a Must Have Utility

Posted: 02 Mar 2012 07:01 AM PST

Vibrate on Call

I cannot count how many times I have had to look at my BlackBerry to see if a call went through or silently failed. I used to use an app that beeped when the call connected but Thomas let me know about a free Vibrate on Call Connect app from AFBB. This tiny utility performs one function and does it very well. You now no longer need to keep on looking at your phone to see if a call is connected or still dialing.

You can download Vibrate on Call Connect free in App World. This is one of those features that I wish RIM simply baked into the OS…
