Free Vibrate on Connect App from Ajani InfoTech

Posted: 09 Mar 2012 01:47 AM PST

Vibrate on Connect

We told you about a Vibrate on Call Connect app last week but since then A4BB has started charging $0.99 for the previously free app. DanielH pointed out in the comments that there is an alternative free app called Vibrate on Connect by Ajani Infotech that performs the same function and is also OS 7.0 compatible. In case you missed the reason for these apps they notify you when it is ok to start talking since the call has connected instead of you saying "Hello" a few times and checking the screen.

You can find Vibrate on Connect in App World free. Hopefully this one stays that way!

RIM Acquires Paratek Microwave Inc for RF Tuning Technologies

Posted: 08 Mar 2012 11:22 AM PST

Paratek

RIM just announced their acquisition of Paratek Microwave Inc today which is their latest in a string of acquisitions. I can only imagine what Paratek will do for RIM does give us a bit of a hint. Paratek is a leader in adaptive RF tuning technologies for multi-band (multiple frequency) devices. They have technology called ParaScan that is a thin material that can vary its capacity as the voltage changes to adapt to different bands. In other words think of phones that can support multiple frequency in a smaller package.

RIM promises that Paratek will continue to focus on developing RF tuning technologies with support from RIM. Hopefully that means we are getting one step further to one BlackBerry that supports all 2G, 3G, and 4G networks without different models… I dream :)

Check out RIM's announcement or more details on Paratek at www.paratek.com. Here is the announcement from Paratek's website:

Research In Motion acquires Paratek

We are pleased to announce that RIM has acquired Paratek Microwave Inc.

As a part of RIM, a technology leader and pioneer in the smartphone category, Paratek will continue to innovate and to bring leading edge adaptive tuning solutions to the industry. We are very excited about this transaction and the opportunity to serve RIM and realize our vision.

As always, we will continue to pursue the development of state-of-the-art adaptive tuning technologies. We look forward to working with our new colleagues and integrating our solutions into RIM's BlackBerry product offerings.

~Ralph Pini, Paratek Microwave, President and CEO.

New PlayBook Puzzler Runaway Trains Hits AppWorld

Posted: 08 Mar 2012 09:55 AM PST

Think you’re good at crisis management? Put it to the test with Runaway Trains. Eric at Ebscer, creator of the popular puzzle/strategy games Pixelated and Xploding Boxes,  brings us another instant classic on the PlayBook.

In Runaway Trains, the trains have run amuck, and it’s up to you to guide them safely back to the barn. As trains emerge from the black tunnel into the yard, you must route them to the correctly-colored depot by quickly switching the track’s configuration. A tap on a junction changes the route. Another tap changes it back. Simple, right? Did I mention that the trains move quickly? And they don’t stop? If you route a train to the wrong color depot, you lose. If two trains collide, you lose. If a train runs out of open track and derails, you lose. And you WILL lose. You will replay levels many, many times. Don’t feel bad, though. It’s tough. It will take a few tries to get the color pattern of the emerging trains down for each level, and further analysis of the track layout to figure out how to get which color where.

Unlike Pixelated and Xploding Boxes, Runaway Trains runs in real-time. You can pause the game at any time with a downward swipe from the top bezel so you can examine the track, but when it comes down to it, execution and split-second timing are your friends. Take advantage of isolation loops to keep troubled trains out of your way while you clear the path home. Keep your wits about you and your fingers nimble, and you’ll be Chief Engineer in no time. Well, sometime. Well…heck, I won’t lie to ya. It’s gonna take awhile. If this game had a theme song, it’d be Ozzy Osbourne’s “Crazy Train”. But, hey! The best games challenge the mind and kill time, right? Runaway Trains delivers both. The first 25 levels are free, and $2.99 gets you up to Level 100, with promise of more twisted train wrecks just around the bend.

Personal rating: 4.5 out 5 berries. Simple graphics keep the game small (only 317k!) and keeps performance high, but the PlayBook can handle much more. I’d love to see these games leverage the high-quality graphics available on the platform.

Download Runaway Trains Free from AppWorld (25 levels free, $2.99 for full version, in-game purchase)

RIM Going Strong in South East Asia

Posted: 08 Mar 2012 09:19 AM PST

As mentioned by Ronen earlier, RIM’s plan for increasing their presence in SouthEast Asia seems to be kicking into place. From contests giving away awesome phones to sponsoring the filming of movies, RIM does seem to be on adrenaline rush right here. Here are some events that have happened and what is currently happening in Singapore, a sunny island in SouthEast Asia.

For the month of February, RIM stepped up the ante by giving away two pairs of BlackBerry Bold 9900 and a pair of BlackBerry 9790. In addition, several boxes of customized BlackBerry chocolates were given away for Valentines Day competition.

Apart from the Valentines Day goodies, RIM also announced their sponsorship for this local movie – TimeLess Love.

With the Gala Premiere just over on Tuesday, and officially in local cinemas in Singapore on Thursday, this is one rather exciting movie to catch for those who have the opportunity to catch it!
Anyways, take a look at the press conference and trailer below:

Now, BlackBerry has teamed up the region together for a regional Skin design competition where you get to design your very own skin for submission and they are giving the winner from each country in the region a BlackBerry 9900 and plenty of goodies for the rest!
The competition is on-going and is expected to end in April. If you are in one of the participating countries, do go take a look!

  • Singapore
  • Malaysia
  • Philippines
  • Indonesia
  • Thailand

Note: Once we have news that the remaining regions have posted up news of their competition, we will update them here!

Updated: World Clock App for Your BlackBerry Smartphone

Posted: 08 Mar 2012 08:49 AM PST

Update: A few readers pointed out that the app is no longer free and costs $1.99. I am not sure when this change was made but AFBB is even more misleading since the app is still called World Clock Free.

World Clock World Clock2

Over the years there have been quite a few world clock apps available for BlackBerry. The latest one I have been using is a free World Clock from AFBB. The app offers up loads of features along with showing you multiple clocks on one screen.

Features include:

  • Automatically detects BlackBerry preloaded time zone configurations.
  • Automatic Daylight Savings Time  DST  calculation\
  • Zoom In and Zoom Out function available on Menu button for better Visibility!
  • Set numerous world clocks running simultaneously with both time and date.
  • If the list is too long and its taking time to scroll, just press the letter on the screen and the app will automatically jump to that city. For ex. type ‘L’ and the app will automatically highlight all cities starting with ‘L’, say London-UK, Long Beach CA
  • Reorder, Delete, Setting, Change City, Add functions in just 1 touch!
  • Support 12/24 hour format.
  • Large clock display, easy to read.
  • Installs as one icon in your application folder, no other setting needed on your device.

OpenSudoku OpenSudoku2

OpenSudoku is a popular opensource Sudoku game designed for Android that has been ported to the BlackBerry PlayBook. The port works quite well in the Android Player on the PlayBook. It gives you access to three levels with 30 puzzles each built into the game. You can also create your own puzzles and download other puzzles.

They announced this week that they will be following it up with a second generation of the BBM Challenge Council this time called the BlackBerry Challenge Council Project. According to RIM:
