RIM Hires Law Firm Milbank, Tweed, Hadley & McCloy LLP for Possible Licensing

Milbank

I have a gut feeling that this has more to do with due diligence but Reuters is attaching quite a bit of significance to it. They exclusively announced (hopefully confirmed) that RIM has hired the law firm Milbank, Tweed, Hadley & McCloy LLP. This engagement is supposedly to "work out a restructuring plan that could include selling assets, seeking joint ventures, or licensing patents" according to "people briefed on the matter."

The sources say that RIM is looking to possibly boost revenue by licensing BlackBerry 10 or opening up access to RIM's NOC for secure communications on other platforms. One of the sources said "This is a very mature strategy and RIM was very far down the road with a lot of those discussions with carriers."

Both RIM and the law firm declined to comment on the story. RIM has hired Milbank previously so who knows what really is going on here. Check out the details at Reuters and let us know what you think.
