Full Device Encryption Shows Up in PlayBook OS 2.1 Beta

Posted: 31 May 2012 02:16 PM PDT

PlayBook-deconstructed

Color me impressed with the PlayBook OS 2.1 Beta release RIM put out today. I know there is more coming in the consumer version but the improvements to the email client and Android player are very nice touches. What really impressed me was what I missed when RIM announced the release of the OS 2.1 Beta. Since the PlayBook was launched security buffs have been complaining that unlike current BlackBerrys the PlayBook does did not allow you to encrypt the personal partition and device storage with options only for the work partition.

Now that has changed with BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2.1 beta. This developer beta allows users to setup full device encryption including the personal partition. That way users with sensitive information can completely encrypt their info. Another nice notable update is that screenshots are now saved in lossless PNG format which RIM claims was a request developers made. Don't forget to whitelist your device here to get the update.

PS: It is also worth noting that not all apps will run on OS 2.1 so consider yourself warned.

Guess The Next QNX reference vehicle & Win a $25 Starbucks Gift Card (25 Winners!!!)

Posted: 31 May 2012 11:06 AM PDT

qnx_reference_vehicle_img_3549_3577_merge

The QNX Auto team has been teasing everyone with their follow up to the QNX Porsche and Corvette. They have confirmed that the next iteration will not be a concept car but rather a concept vehicle. I immediately started dreaming of a QNX powered motorcycle but they said it is not a truck, van, or motorcycle. They have shared four pictures of the vehicle so far and have even decided to make the guessing interesting.

 image25 image23

If you can guess what vehicle is in these pictures and live in the US or Canada you can win a $25 Starbucks Gift Card. They are giving out the gift certificate to the first 25 people who respond with the correct answer. Here are the rules from the QNX Auto blog:

Earlier votes don't count; you have to vote on Twitter, starting today. Simply follow our handle at @QNX_Auto and tweet @QNX_Auto with your guess, and you'll be entered. And stay tuned on Twitter, where we'll post more pictures. Don't have Twitter? You can vote here, but you must include your email. And in order to play fair, QNX employees aren’t eligible – shucks.

You have until June 6th when the vehicle (Though they do continue calling it a car) will be unveiled so get cracking.

BlackBerry OS 7.1 Application Resource Monitor to Kill Battery Sucking Apps

Posted: 31 May 2012 10:50 AM PDT

resource-monitor-3

I am really liking what I am reading about a new feature RIM is adding to BlackBerry OS 7.1 devices. The new Application Resource Monitor is something I have been wanting RIM to do for awhile. It automatically monitors running processes on your BlackBerry that are running in the background or using excessive CPU or timers (You know who you are…) and allows you to set them to shut down before they kill your battery. You can also whitelist certain apps and more so it is like an intelligent automated task manager for problematic apps.

Mark from RIM posted on the developer blog detailing how apps can avoid being shut down for excessive usage. I really hope RIM adds this soon and better yet allows older devices to download the Application Resource Monitor as an app. BlackBerry 10 & the PlayBook OS more or less does something like this automatically in the background so I am not sure if it is necessary. Let us know what you think!
