RIM Confirms Current Layoffs

Posted: 21 Jun 2012 02:16 AM PDT

RIM office_5x3_med-res

We have been hearing rumors about RIM doing a large scale layoff as part of their strategy. Thorsten Heins confirmed as much during their last earnings call where he said that it is part of RIM's initiative to cut down operating costs by a billion dollars by the end of fiscal 2013. Now RIM has confirmed that these headcount reductions are part of this initiative. The Record and other sources claim that these layoffs are mainly going to hit sales and manufacturing which makes sense as RIM winds down the current lines of BlackBerry devices during the ramp up of BlackBerry 10 up to its launch. Here is what RIM said in confirming the layoffs:

"RIM has committed to achieving significant efficiencies and operating cost reductions over the course of this fiscal year. Headcount reductions are part of this initiative." – Tenille Kennedy (RIM Spokesperson)

The count for this layoff round is rumored to be around 2,000 employees bringing RIM to about 14,500 or so but some rumors have RIM lowering that even further. This is all conjecture for now but we are hearing from some RIM sources about the current layoffs though morale still seems to be positive with some serious pride in BlackBerry 10. To all of you who are leaving RIM we wish you the best of luck in your future endeavors and we are sad to see you go.

TalkBox Updates Voice Messenger Beta App to v0.923 (Now 0.930!)

Posted: 20 Jun 2012 10:33 AM PDT

Talkbox

Jason let me know that TalkBox has updated their recently launched public beta of their BlackBerry smartphone client. As we mentioned previously the apps allows you to send voice messages back and forth in an instant messaging fashion. In other words think of it as a walkie talkie service that works cross platform from iOS, Android, Windows Phone and now BlackBerry.

The release notes for the latest v0.923 build include:

  • Better battery management for BIS push notification service.
  • Added hot-keys for easy and convenient use: To Top(T), To Bottom(B), Scroll Down(X), Scroll Up(E), Change Page( P), Refresh(R ), Search(S), Reconnect(Z), Quit(Q)
  • Custom push notification settings.
  • Generally enhancing the launch performance after first time launch.
  • A better and more straight forward user interface.
  • Minor bug fix for previous versions.

Check out the beta at this link as long as you have OS 5.0+ and an SD card.

Magmic let us know about them bringing the popular official Phase 10 game to the PlayBook after its success on BlackBerry smartphones. You can play three random phases free with the free version though the premium version unlocks all 10 phases. We did not mention it yesterday when it went live since the price was lowered to $0.99 and had not propagated all over App World but should now be valid.

Posted: 20 Jun 2012 07:55 AM PDT

BlackBErry 10 World Jam DUbai

The BlackBerry 10 Jam World Tour has been hitting cities across the world and it is definitely catching developer interest. RIM is learning from their previous events and launches and is doing a much better job of focusing the events this time. They are geared towards introducing developers to the BlackBerry 10 platform and getting them started.

RIM announced that they have opened up registration for the events in Dubai and Cape Town this week. That means you just need to head to www.blackberryjamworldtour.com to register. They also supposedly still have a few seats left for Sydney on July 12th and other locations.

Imo.im Picks Up After Meebo and Imports Your Chat Logs to Their Service

Posted: 20 Jun 2012 07:15 AM PDT

Import Chat History

Imo.im is seriously capitalizing on Meebo's shuttering their Instant Messaging clients after Meebo was acquired by Google. We told you yesterday that you have until July 11th to download your chat logs from Meebo before they remove that too. Imo.im saw the opportunity there are is offering a service to transition your chat logs to the Imo.im instant messaging platform. That means you will have access to your chat logs and sharing them.

Better yet you can use Imo.im as your new cross platform messenger on your BlackBerry with access to the most popular instant messaging networks. Check out the details of importing your Meebo chat logs into Imo.im on their blog and let us know how it goes. You can download the Imo.im BlackBerry client here.

More Hands On Video of BlackBerry 10 Features on the Dev Alpha

Posted: 20 Jun 2012 05:46 AM PDT

 BlackBerry 10 CNET

Since RIM first showed off some sweet features of BlackBerry 10 at BlackBerry World they have not really been allowing the press to take any videos of it in action. They have allowed the press (specifically in London) to play with the device and take pictures but not video. David pointed out to me that they seem to have allowed CNET along with The Verge and Engadget to actually take a video of the BlackBerry 10 features we saw previously but with a slightly different context. The items shown in the video, flow/peek/keyboard, are the same but its worth checking out:
