| RIM’s Senior VP of Design Todd Wood Speaks Out Posted: 26 Jun 2012 01:55 AM PDT
Starting last year Todd Wood, SVP Design at RIM, has shared sporadic details about the design process at RIM. His latest addition is a short interview with Donny from the official BlackBerry blog. In it Todd discusses the design process from RIM's 3Ds of design (Definition, Development and Delivery) to consumer panels. One of Wood's personal inspiration sources is the Milan Furniture Fair in April where designers show off their designs from around the world. One of the other interesting facts shared by Wood was that recent customer feedback has shown the importance of design up top with the fundamentals of internet access on smartphones. | T-Mobile Swapping Spectrum With Verizon for LTE Rollout Posted: 25 Jun 2012 01:38 PM PDT
T-Mobile and Verizon came out today announcing that they have come to an agreement for swapping spectrum on the secondary market. This is all contingent based on Verizon's dealings with SpectrumCo, Leap Wireless, and Cox and is dependent on those sales being approved. It gives T-Mobile some much needed AWS spectrum that they use and will incorporate into their LTE rollout next year. This AWS spectrum also benefits Verizon which will help them cover 22 million people and net them some cash in the end. All in all both carriers are touting the benefits (Verizon/T-Mobile) of the secondary market to gain spectrum. If you tried signing up for the BlackBerry 10 Jam World Tour in Asia Pacific you may have seen that they were sold out quickly. RIM just posted up that they have added more seats to conference in Bangalore (July 2), Delhi (July 4), and Jakarta (July 10). There is still a limited availability so register soon. | The Economist Comes to the BlackBerry PlayBook Posted: 25 Jun 2012 08:12 AM PDT
The Economist website looks really sharp in the PlayBook browser but now they have taken things one step further with a PlayBook App. The app is really just a teaser app unless you have an Economist subscription (Digital or Print) though there is some free content available (Editor Highlights). Caching is also nice though I have not had a chance to test it out yet.

I have been trying to avoid that recent rumor started by the Sunday Times of London that we mentioned earlier today. It went against many of the firm statements that Thorsten Heins made when taking the reins at RIM including them dedicated to keep services and hardware together. Now the Globe and Mail's long time RIM correspondent Ian Marlow mentioned that he heard from several sources close to RIM who:
That more or less sums up what we have been hearing for awhile along with Ian hearing on Sunday from two former RIM executive that:
My take is that there may be some truth in this rumor in the fact that RIM may consider some partnership for hardware manufacturing or for licensing certain devices though this is nothing new. Heins has mentioned the possibility of RIM moving in that direction before though he has clearly said that one of RIM's main strengths is the combination of the RIM software designed for the RIM hardware. The first rumoured devices were to be the London and the Nevada, and it seems that they have just shortened it to be L-Series and N-Series. We all know that the all touch L-Series will launch first, and here are what we can see for specs. BlackBerry L-series:
Essentially it is the same screen as the Developer Alpha that some of us were lucky enough to receive, and mainly all that’s going to be changing is the form factor, and the styling of the device. One of the great things to me is that the screen on the L-Series will actually be a better screen than the iPhone 4/4s. Another detail you can get from the picture above is the UI structure of the screen. It lets us see where and how big some of the UI items will be on screen. The Nevada, now known as the N-Series is what a lot of die hard QWERTY users are waiting for, and it seems that the first release will be sporting an OLED display. From the looks of the specs for size, it could be a great device, while using all of the screen for BB10 greatness. BlackBerry N-series:

| Rumor has RIM Splitting Off Handset Manufacturing Division Posted: 25 Jun 2012 05:28 AM PDT
You have to love the rumor mill of late. The latest RIM rumor has unnamed sources telling The Sunday Times (Reuters) that RIM is considering splitting their business in two. That would separate the handset manufacturing division from the rest of the company. There really is nothing much substantiating this rumor but I felt we had to mention it since it has taken over the web this weekend. Potential named buyers are Amazon and Facebook who may also be interested in RIM's wireless network. Another possibility is opening the company to selling a large stake to a bigger company such as Microsoft. RIM has already said that they have hired JP Morgan and RBC Capital to investigate strategic options so this is probably just one of the many options on the table. RIM did provide a comment stating exactly that:
