Pacemaker v1.1.1 Release Brings Stability & Removes Time Bomb

Posted: 27 Jun 2012 01:51 AM PDT

PaceMaker

Pacemaker did an awesome job with their music DJ app for the BlackBerry PlayBook. Both the lite and full version of the app were updated this week to v1.1.1 and address one of the main weaknesses in the app. According to the official @pacemaker Twitter account it adds stability updates along with the removal of a nasty bug that was left from the beta version. You should update because if you don't that beta bug will disable the app on July 1st.

Also worth noting is the fact that Pacemaker has answered about the differences between the full and lite version and clarified that there is no way to upgrade between the two.

RIM Lists APIs Coming to BlackBerry 10 SDK Betas On the Road to Gold

Posted: 26 Jun 2012 02:44 PM PDT

BBW12_JamSuperSession_2

I am really loving the openness RIM has provided into the development of BlackBerry 10 and the tools for developers. The latest in this vein is an article by Tim Neil detailing what to expect in the current "First Beta" of the BlackBerry 10 SDK tools that are available now. On top of that he makes it very clear that this is only the first of many beta's in the cycle to a Gold release for BlackBerry 10 development tools. They are trying to minimize any changes that may require you to change functionality supported in a previous beta for compatibility.

What I found most interesting was Tim reiterating that:

RIM has a strong heritage in delivering fantastic deep integration into the core BlackBerry experience and providing a differentiating factor for your application on the platform, and this will continue with BlackBerry 10. As we evolve the BlackBerry 10 SDKs, these deep integration APIs will be made available, but they aren't quite ready for 3rd party consumption yet.

He then went on to list some of the APIs coming:

These APIs are still seeing refactoring as we move through all the use cases of our core applications. We want to ensure that both our core apps are using the same APIs as 3rd party developers and that the APIs see minimal changes after they are made available in a Beta.

I won't list all of the APIs that are coming, but I'll list the hot topics where I usually get inquiries:

  • BBM™
  • PIM (Contacts, Calendar, Tasks, Notes)
  • Messages/Email
  • NFC
  • Share/Invoke Framework
    • Adding your menu item to an existing app
    • Invoking and being invoked by another app
  • String pattern registry
  • Geocoding & reverse geocoding
  • Bluetooth®

All these and more will be coming in follow-up Beta releases, so make sure you grab the SDKs and start building the core of your application to ensure that you're ready to integrate these features as soon as they're available!

I am really waiting for the PIM and Messages API integration since that will start the super app craze. Anyone else excited!

App World 3.1.4.20 FINALLY Adds Upgrade All Option in Beta Zone

Posted: 26 Jun 2012 01:55 PM PDT

appworld_highres

Since App World launched I have been waiting for this feature and it is finally here. Until now you had to update each app in App World separately. Now RIM has finally added the ability to "Upgrade All" using the new "Upgrade All" button. You can also share your list of installed apps over NFC and view lists of installed apps from friends.

The full change log includes:

  • Download all app updates with the new "Upgrade All" button
  • Share your list of installed apps using NFC technology
  • View lists of installed apps from multiple friends using NFC technology
  • Connect BlackBerry App World to BBM to display a variety of new BlackBerry App World actions in your BBM personal message
  • Finnish language support
  • Various bug fixes

Kudos to the App World team for getting this out in the Beta Zone here. Hopefully they are working day and night on coupon and promo code support… :)

BlackBerry Joins the App Alliance & Encourages Devs to Follow

Posted: 26 Jun 2012 12:44 PM PDT

ADA RIM

The Application Developers Alliance (ADA) nonprofit started out at CES 2012 this January and has since signed on some nice partners. The ADA was designed to help developers organize while generating revenue for their services from sponsors and membership fees. Their main industry backer seems to have been AT&T but now RIM has added themselves to that list.

RIM sent out an email to registered developers letting them know RIM has joined the ADA. They sum it up by saying that:

The Application Developers Alliance is the voice of the development industry. We’ve joined the Alliance as a corporate partner, and invite you to join for free adding yourself to the network of nearly 7,000 independent developers who are coming together to help define our industry. Start benefiting from your free membership with discounts, event calendars, job postings and more!

Check out the details on the BlackBerry landing page of the App Developer Alliance

Another Leaked BlackBerry 10 Slide Shows Augmented QWERTY+Touch Keyboard

Posted: 26 Jun 2012 12:12 PM PDT

BlackBerry 10 N Series Keyboard

The designs in this strung along leak for the N-Series and L-Series BlackBerry 10 devices seem primitive for this stage of the game but may give us some insight into RIM's plans. Many users have been wondering what will happen to the BlackBerry classic trackball since it is missing on the BlackBerry 10 devices. According to this slide scored by N4BB the N-Series QWERTY keyboard packing BlackBerry 10 device will combine the touchscreen with the keyboard. It will offer an augmented touch section of the extended keyboard commands for things like word completion and umlat selection overlay.

This might cramp things a bit on the 720×720 pixel screen but I do like the idea. Still one of my favorite parts about the trackpad is the ability to use the phone with one hand. Hopefully RIM manages to incorporate that in BlackBerry 10.

WordPress for BlackBerry PlayBook v2.1.3 Squashes Some Bugs

Posted: 26 Jun 2012 08:55 AM PDT

Wordpress PlayBook

I have been using WordPress for BlackBerry PlayBook since it launched in February. The app is really an Android port but it works quite well especially in the latest PlayBook dev beta. They just updated the BlackBerry PlayBook version together with the Android source to v2.1.3. Digging through the change log this release includes:

  • Fixed account setup connection issues for certain self-hosted blogs.
  • New Account button added to the action bar’s blog selector.
  • Reliability improvements.

You can check out the details in the 2.1.3 ticket milestone but either way I recommend downloading the updated WordPress for BlackBerry PlayBook.

Leaked Slides Show BBM on BlackBerry 10 Concepts

Posted: 26 Jun 2012 08:26 AM PDT

BBM BlackBerry 10

After being treated to some leaked data yesterday on the rumored L-Series (full touchscreen) and N-Series (QWERTY keyboard) devices we have another set of slides. This time N4BB has scored some mockup's of what could be BBM on BlackBerry 10. Nothing shown contradicts the wireframes and details Shiladitya Sircar, Director of R&D BBM at RIM, showed off at BlackBerry 10 Jam 2012 which is good to see. The mockups seem to use the similar shout out boxes and design of the current BBM chats with some Cascades tweaks.

BBM BlackBerry 10-2

Another thing noted in the slides is the fact that RIM has opened up BBM to themes to save battery life by using a darker theme and colors. The slides claim that with a black theme battery use can be lowered 25% especially with OLED screens that are naturally black. Check the slides out for yourself and let us know what you think!

Slacker Adds New Personalize Lifestyle Stations with ABC Content

Posted: 26 Jun 2012 05:30 AM PDT

Slacker ABC

Slacker let us know about their latest effort to further differentiate themselves from competitors such as Pandora. They just announced a new partnership with ABC to bring personalized lifestyle stations to Slacker with content from sources including  Esquire, Car & Driver, Consumer Reports, Popular Mechanics, Complex Magazine and GQ. Topics include Style & Fashion, Cars & Gear, Travel & Adventure, Entertainment, Money, Relationships, Green Living, Parenting and Home Improvement.

The most interesting part is that Slacker is letting you customize the lifestyle content just like you can using their ESPN sports station. You can prioritize topics or even narrow it down with stereotypical "male centric" or "female centric" content.

Definitely worth checking out at www.Slacker.com. The content should be available as you read this including through their free BlackBerry app and is available to all levels of Slacker subscribers.
