RIM Confirms Some Devs Will Get Slightly Modified BlackBerry 10 Dev Alpha’s

Posted: 31 Jul 2012 08:23 PM PDT

BlackBerry 10 Dev Alpha B

Over the years RIM has always released multiple builds of the internal dev devices before launch so this is really no surprise. Recently some sharp eyed souls noticed that RIM had even posted a render of a revision called the BlackBerry 10 Dev Alpha B on RIMs developer website. RIM quickly pulled it down and the speculation continued.

@NerdBoss514 couldn't leave it at that and asked @BlackBerryDev on Twitter and actually got a response. Here is what they said:

Dev Alpha Tweets

They then followed up detailing some of the small changes coming for some future devices. RIM has confirmed that they will be giving away more of the devices before the launch of BlackBerry 10 so that may be when we see them probably around BlackBerry 10 Jam Americas. There are also rumors that they changed some of the components due to them being changed by manufacturers.

Kudos to Bla1ze @CrackBerry for pointing out the conversation

Microsoft Cannibalizes Hotmail with Impressive New Outlook Preview

Posted: 31 Jul 2012 11:25 AM PDT

New Outlook

Microsoft has been horribly squandering their Hotmail service for years. They have promised change for ages but things have gotten so bad that I no longer know anyone who actually uses an @Hotmail.com address as their email. (Its almost as bad as an @AOL.com address) It looks like Microsoft has finally wizened up and released something actually competitive with their new Outlook Preview. This new preview sort of looks like their new Outlook 365 for enterprise and is a nice clean interface without the blaring advertisements and horrid UI found in Hotmail.

This new Outlook preview is available now and Outlook is gunning for their users back from Gmail. They are offering features like Gmail contact sync and simplified instructions for migrating from Gmail. Along with that there is tight integration with Skydrive and features like Exchange ActiveSync for PlayBook users. Oddly they do not have support for IMAP which is a real bummer for some users who prefer that format. On the other hand they are making a point of stacking themselves up against Gmail feature-wise. (Their own comparison)

I have tested an Outlook.com account on both my 9900 and PlayBook and it seems to work OK. I really see no reason to switch from Gmail unless you have something against them philosophically. On the other hand if you are a hotmail user I HIGHLY recommend trying out the new Outlook Preview free at www.outlook.com. Hopefully Microsoft does not place arbitrary limits on it like requiring a monthly fee for ActiveSync access. You can read more about the preview at www.outlookpreview.com or watch their intro video below:

PS: Does anyone else see the irony in Microsoft asking "Why have our expectations become so low?" when it comes to email? Thankfully they woke up and smelled the coffee.

Popular BeBuzz LED Control App Updated to v5.0.81

Posted: 31 Jul 2012 08:33 AM PDT

BeBuzz BeBuzz2

The hugely popular BeBuzz (formerly BerryBuzz) app from Bellshare just got a small update to v5.0.81 this week. This new update brings some features I wish all apps would have including Bellshares BeReader and BeWeather though hopefully they are coming soon. It adds a license auto recovery option after device wipe and makes it easy to transfer your license to a new device from inside the app. Best of all this version also includes "improved memory and battery usage" which is always a perk. :)

Check out the latest version of BeBuzz in App World

RIM’s Adrian Stone Discusses Changes in Security Relations for BlackBerry

Posted: 31 Jul 2012 08:08 AM PDT

BlackBerry Security Summit

Over the past year or two I have been making a point of highlighting the major changes at RIM's BlackBerry Security department especially how it relates to the public. It all really started changing when the BlackBerry WebKit browser was hacked a bit back by some researchers at Pwn2Own and how RIM dealt with the situation and disclosed the necessary public information… Now they are co-sponsoring the Pwn2Own competition this year. They also seem to have finally squashed the BES PDF vulnerability that kept plaguing RIM every few months for years. On top of that they also gracefully handled the BlackBerry PlayBook Dingleberry (jailbreak) and ElcomSoft brute force password attack which lead to RIM holding their first BlackBerry Security Summit with external researchers this year.

Now while at one of the most popular security conferences of the year, BlackHat, we have Adrian Stone sitting down with TreatPost for a quick Q&A. Adrian is RIM's director of BlackBerry Security Incident Response and has been pretty vocal recently with engaging security researchers. If you want to learn a bit more about what RIM does check out the full interview over at ThreatPost (via N4BB)

FileScout & FileScoutLite Updated to v2.9.1.1

Posted: 31 Jul 2012 06:55 AM PDT

Filescout

EmacBerry has updated their very popular premium FileScout and free FileScoutLite app to v2.9.1.1 recently. This update is not a huge one but it does offer up a new interface for touch devices and offers the ability to hide the toolbar to get more screen real estate. There is also a clipboard now to facilitate copy and paste functions.

The full change log includes:

  • New Appearance Option (Touch Devices only): Hide Toolbar (change will take only effect after a restart of FileScout)
If you have the opinion that the additional touch toolbar at the bottom have no use for you, you now can disable the toobar to get additional space on the screen.
  • New Settings Category ‘Copy, Paste & Clipboard Setting’:
    • Clear Clipbboard before add a File/Dir [Default OFF]
Now you can select if the clipboard should be automatically flushed when you add a file or directory (in previous builds this was hardcoded)
    • Clear Clipbboard before add muliple Files/Directories (multiple Selection) [Default OFF]
Same as above – just for the adding multiple files (selection)
    • When Destination Exist (moved from the General Settings category)
    • Clear Clipboard after Copy [Default OFF]
If enabled all successful copied files/directories will be removed from the clipboard. (Please Note that when you make use of the move operation this always happens)
    • Clear Selection after Copy [Default OFF]
If enabled all files that have been previously marked as selected in FileScout (no matter if added to the clipboard or not) will be unselected
  • Search have an additional checkbox to search only in the current directory and all sub-directories

You can find FileScout premium for $4.99 in App World along with FileScoutLite (OTA here)

Box Office Movies Helps You Find Movies to Watch from Your PlayBook

Posted: 31 Jul 2012 05:55 AM PDT

box_office_movies

Box Office Movies is a PlayBook app that pulls in movie information from Rotten Tomatoes to your PlayBook. Currently it allows you to view upcoming and current movies in theaters in a nice native app. Sadly the app does not allow you to play trailers but hopefully they are working on that. For now you can get the movie poster, cast, synopsis, rating, and more along with an overview of the movie. It covers movies on DVD along with those in theaters.

While some may just prefer browsing the Rotten Tomatoes site you may want to check out Box Office Movies for $0.99 in App World.
