| Free PicStory Image Filtering App Updated With New UI & New Filters Posted: 02 Aug 2012 02:06 AM PDT The hugely popular PicStory image filtering and sharing app got a nice update to v4.0.1 recently. They announced the new features on their Facebook page when it launched in mid July but they have just put out a maintenance release to v4.0.1. This new update to v4.0 adds a whole new UI along with 20 new filters and improved image quality. Definitely worth checking out.

I was sort of happy about the unconfirmed rumor from earlier today that RIM may be closing their Wireless Giant run branded retail stores in 9 US airports. I have never really seen such stores being very successful especially cellphone shops in US airports. Either way RIM has reached out and responded with the following to the rumor:
It looks like RIM probably closed one store and that is that but who knows. I am more interested in their whole holistic marketing strategy for BlackBerry 10 since these airport retail shops do not seem to be very cost effective. If you liked this article, you might find these interesting:

It is no secret that the nine Wireless Giant BlackBerry Retail stores in the US have not been doing well recently. According to a likely but unconfirmed source at the Cantech Letter RIM is rumored to be closing their US stores. They highlight how this is in contrast to developing countries like the UAE, EMEA, Indonesia, and other areas where RIM is opening multiple new stores. There really is not much substance to this rumor but I have a hunch that RIM would be better served during the launch of BlackBerry 10 with stronger advertising and traveling experience centers at airports and other locations instead of branded stores. | Updated: Rogers Stores Getting Boxes Labeled "PlayBook Security" – Possibly 4G PlayBooks? Posted: 01 Aug 2012 11:37 AM PDT Update: CrackBerry has discovered that this box is holding a security casing for the BlackBerry PlayBook 4G. According to a tip from Alberto “certain Rogers will have live units in stores for people to try out and this will serve as theft prevention.”
You have to love how this stuff leaks out. The crew at MobileSyrup scored an internal memo from Rogers that says locations will start receiving a box labeled "PLAYBOOK SECURITY" shortly and they "should store it safely in the back room until further notice." This has them speculating that these have something to do with the 4G BlackBerry PlayBook which was rumored to launch at the end of last month. The current rumored launch date seems to be next week August 8th or 9th but who knows. Either way we should be learning more soon! No related posts. The iShower is now shipping which means we can test it out for ourselves and see how it stacks up. | HeroCraft Brings Dragon and Dracula & Kikoriki to Smartphones & PlayBook Posted: 01 Aug 2012 08:44 AM PDT
HeroCraft is continuing to make good on their promise of bringing more games to the PlayBook and BlackBerry smartphones. Their latest releases are two new games with versions for both the PlayBook and BlackBerry smartphones. Personally I am liking the smartphone version of Dragon and Dracula but overall the games look like fun. Kikoriki: the Beginning is based on the animated series Kikoriki and is sort of a cartoon styled platformer. The second game is Dragon and Dracula which is more of an arcade style platformer where you grow your dragon and learn new skills.

I am not sure what took Wikitude so long but they have finally come out and officially announced the TripAdvisor integration they launched earlier this month. It really is just a direct link to the built in TripAdvisor section that you already have in Wikitude on your BlackBerry but it does make it easier to get to. The TripAdvisor Augmented Reality app is available in App World. What I actually found more interesting in the announcement was that Wikitude has confirmed that they will be releasing their Augmented Reality SDK for BlackBerry 10. That should hopefully make it much easier for companies to create Augmented Reality apps for the new platform at launch. | TAT Founder Hampus Jakobsson Leaves RIM to Work on Another Startup Posted: 01 Aug 2012 08:14 AM PDT
It is a little over a year and six months since RIM acquired The Astonishing Tribe (TAT) on December 2nd, 2010. RIM's teams have welcomed TAT with open hands and you can see their design elements all over the PlayBook, BlackBerry 10, and even RIM's website. Hell the new UI framework for native apps on BlackBerry 10, Cascades, is the byproduct of their original Cascades product. This week TAT founder Hampus Jakobsson has announced via Twitter that he is leaving RIM. That is not surprising since most serial entrepreneurs do not like working for big companies for long. He explained on his new personal Twitter account, @hajak, that he left "cause I’m a startup-guy and even if I really liked the company and the people, I felt it was time to start another one." I somehow missed this one when i-Mentalist released it a bit back but it is definitely worth a mention. Their Slotch app offers up the weather along with a world clock and multiple alarms into one PlayBook app. Its makes the app into one sweet bedside clock along with nice integration with FUZZengine for custom features. You can have multiple cities showing up in Slotch with all the options like digital.analog, custom sounds per alarm, override device volume, and more. I missed it when it came out but Kisai Labs released a nice copy of Connect 4 for BlackBerry smartphones called Captain’s Mistress. The game has you putting four of your pieces in a row just like the classic but adds a cool twist. You can play against your friends on BBM which makes it a fun multiplayer classic.
