Way back during CES in January of this year we had Qualcomm showing off the MSM8960 Snapdragon S4 chip and then including RIM as one of their partners for its launch. This led to speculation that RIM would be using this new 28nm CPU in their upcoming BlackBerry QNX phones. RIM has been really cagey about the specs for BlackBerry 10 devices but Heins has promised that they will be competitive. This is why it is no surprise to be hearing a rumor from BBOS that the first BlackBerry 10 phones will be packing Qualcomm's S4 Pro MSM8960t processor. This is a 1.5Ghz-1.7Ghz dual core processor with Adreno 320 GPU and supports all the goodies including LTE, GSM/CDMA, and more. Its nice to see that RIM is going for these chips for BlackBerry 10 and hopefully they will help keep BlackBerry 10 competitive. I know many people will immediately jump to asking when BlackBerry 10 will go quad core but personally I am more interested in what kind of battery life they will have. What do you think? | RIM Confirms BlackBerry 10 Devices Will Have Magnetic Holsters! Posted: 22 Aug 2012 02:48 PM PDT
One of the traditional BlackBerry features that I truly enjoy is the earth magnet holster. There is something to be said for pulling your BlackBerry out of its holster and it automatically opening the latest email that arrived. Its one of those old school features that I was really hoping RIM would carry over to BlackBerry 10 but was missing in the Dev Alpha and PlayBook. RIM has just more or less confirmed that in their latest announcement of the BlackBerry 10 Beta SDK Arrival Boards. The Native Beta Roadmap details a new BPS Holster Service that is scheduled to arrive in the 3rd release of the Native Beta SDK. This new API allows developers to determine if the device is in or out of the holster which is exactly how RIM does it now with BlackBerry 7. Its nice to see that RIM has not forgotten the small things. What other features do you want to see RIM carry over from current BlackBerrys to BlackBerry 10? I am hugely impressed with RIM right now. As promised they have released what they call "Arrival Boards" for all of the BlackBerry 10 beta roadmaps. This means developers know when to expect upcoming features and releases and when they are set to freeze. | RIM Reaffirms Commitment to Qt & Cascades as Digia Finishes Acquisition From Nokia Posted: 22 Aug 2012 12:01 PM PDT
Qt is a widely used cross platform application framework that has been around for 20 years and is still going strong. BlackBerry PlayBook native developers are familiar with Qt since RIM uses it as a foundational piece of their Cascades application framework. A little over a year ago Digia purchased the commercial licensing and professional services business side of the open source Qt project. As of this week Digia has completed the full acquisition of Qt from Nokia along with 125 Nokia developers. Their immediate goal is to bring Qt support to Android, iOS, and Windows 8. That is great news for RIM since it will mean more developers with apps familiar with Qt that can be easily turned towards Cascades. Tim Neil at RIM has gotten ahead of questions by posting on the DevBlog with a reaffirmed commitment to Qt and welcoming Qt developers to the BlackBerry platform. RIM has pushed out another small update to BlackBerry Protect in App World. The app seems to be working the same so this is probably just a bug fix from the previous v1.1.1.73. RIM has been detailing exactly how BlackBerry PlayBooks and future BlackBerry 10 devices will connect using ActiveSync for ages. Due to some blogger who must have been confused for the last few years it seems like RIM's Senior Director for Enterprise Product Management, Jeff Holleran, decided to reiterate the point. People are getting really confused by BlackBerry 10 devices, PlayBooks, and Mobile Fusion making use of ActiveSync instead of the ancient MAPI protocol. The new ActiveSync component in Mobile Fusion is actually a nice improvement over the previous proprietary MAPI protocol in my opinion and has matured quite a bit since its launch. In a blog post on the BlackBerry BizBlog Jeff Holleran explains exactly how the connection differs from the current BlackBerry Enterprise Server configuration. One of the things I like most about this new implementation using ActiveSync is that companies can make use of Mobile Fusion to replace VPN and not expose ActiveSync to the world while allowing RIM to support many different mail servers beyond Exchange. On the other hand this also allows companies to forgo using Mobile Fusion and simply use ActiveSync while still getting full sync of PIM but not BlackBerry level security. We told you earlier today about leaked docs that pointed to T-Mobile bringing back unlimited data plans and they have panned out. As other carriers put more restrictions on their data plans T-Mobile is introducing a new truly unlimited data plan starting September 5th. There are no data caps, speed limits, or anything to contend with though it cannot be used with tethering. Ice Cold Apps PDF Creator Ultimate is a pretty cool solution for those of you who need to scan documents or images and send them off. It is available for BlackBerry smartphones and the PlayBook but the PlayBook version is very basic and missing some key features like the ability to send off the PDF via email (probably because of API limitations).
PDF Creator Ultimate comes in both a free and pro version for $1.99 with the Pro version adding loads more features though the free version is functional. You can see the differences in the section below:
